Here’s my opinion on key players who missed out.
Zanetti
Pro: Great person and leader. Good dribble, good stamina. Familiarity with Samuel creating a tight defence on the left side.
Cons: As good as he is at dribbling with the ball and his stamina is amazing, but all those runs never end us as centers (not ideal for counter attacking football) or goals.

Cambiasso
Pro: Not as good a tackler as mascherano but better offensive weapon. Intelligent player ala Maxi Rodriguez.
Cons: Slow. Not useful unless Maradona employs double 5 system like Basile or at Inter with Motta.

Banega (my favorite player not going to the world cup)
Pro: Great dribbler and passer. Also very strong at defending. Would have been great if Maradona wanted to create a team similar to Barca.
Cons: Bad temperament (but so is Veron who got red carded this pass week). Some character issues that I’ve heard but not sure if they are true or not.

Aimar
Pros: Great playmaker (passer and dribbler). Has motivation to prove others wrong, especially those who ignored him during earlier years.
Cons: Maradona opted to go for Pastore who is younger and just as skilled, if not better. I’m OK with this.

Lisandro Lopez
Pros: Great scorer. Plays hard and was voted player of the year at Ligue 1.
Cons: Just too many options at FW. Even though I hate Palermo, with 6 players available, it won’t affect the team much because 5th/6th FW won’t get much chance to play.

7 players who will be cut: Insaurralde, Lavezzi, Blanco, Garce, Coloccini, Sosa, Maxi or Datolo

I’m definitely not happy with Maradona and his selection of players but hopefully he proves me wrong. At least we have the best player on the planet on our side in Messi.

Spain is no longer a favorite in my book. Their defense will likely leak. Puyol has been atrocious as of late.

Losing Veron to a suspension could be a blessing, as Pastore (I assume) could step in. Mascherano, we have no sub. None.

The squad is still good enough to win, but it depends on the following:

1) Mascherano not getting injured or suspended.
2) The defense actually focusing on defense and not attack. I haven’t seen much evidence of this in the past, but perhaps the philosophy has finally changed.
3) The midfield playing wide rather than straight up the field. Side and diagonal movements and passing, unlike what we’ve seen in the past with the squad.
4) Guys like Heinze, Veron, Mascherano, Otamendi, etc. avoiding red cards.

If Cambiasso had been called, 1) would not be an issue.

2) all depends on what Diego instructs the players to do, and making sure they hold their line. De and Samuel will be huge. I am very glad Burdisso made it at least.

3) is really what I think (hope) Diego is referring to when he talks about developing in the 30 day runup to the Cup. Messi and Veron in particular need to be on the same page, and DiMaria needs to PASS the ball…..

4) is a crapshoot and has little to do with Diego. Except for choosing hothead Veron and Gabriel “MMA” Heinze , that is. There are a lot o fhotheads and card-prone players on our squad. This IS Argentina after all…

Of course the one advantage to using some home based players is that the European and African coaches have not seen them much. I really like Sosa (yes, he played for Bayern before returning), and hope he makes the final squad. I certainly prefer Sosa over Datolo. Clemente is a good home based pick. Otamendi has a huge upside and a huge downside, but I suspect that letting him focus on defending and not being caught too far up will minimize the downside. One can only hope that is Diego’s true plan.

The most glaring misses for me are Cambiasso, Zanetti, and Lucho Gonzalez. With the way that Inter have been playing, and with the passing of Lucho, those really shock me. Cambiasso is ideal to sub or pair with Mascherano (who has no sub!). Zanetti has played right back and right midfield very well for Inter, and is a leader. Lucho’s passing is superb.

Other key misses are Licha and Aimar, but they bother me less because we have a lot of great forwards and Pablito is worrisome for the team defensively and health-wise.

He does not pass with Messi, NAPOLIFAN. This is what I am referring to. They do not seem to like each other, and in order for the team to work it has to work with Leo, not against him.

No argument regarding his talent. He is one of the best left midfielders in the world, even at his age. There is a reason ManCity, ManU, Real, etc. are all after him (and supposedly Real got him).

Veron, DiMaria, and Messi all seem to be on different wavelengths with the team, however. In order for the team to achieve its optimum scoring capabilities, they have to fix that.

There was a discussion in mision mundial (clarin) talking about why zanetti, cambiasso, banega, etc. were missing in the list of 30.
They said that by eliminating them from the list of 30, they can avoid all the hupla that will exist when they are finally eliminated from the final list of 23, which by then will be too close to the world cup. By having local/ unheralded players selected, removing them will be much easier. Also, I think it will be disrespectful to those players if they are added to the list of 30 just to be removed later. It’s better to deal with less popular players.
I still wish Zanetti, Cambiasso, lucho, aimar, and banega were to be selected, but i guess now it’s too late. Hopefully Maradona knows what he’s doing.
I have this feeling where either Argentina will fail totally or win the cup. Hopefully the latter becomes true.

Defender (ala zanetti) will only come in if we are winning by large margin or to save defenders from getting another card or something.

So the key players that will come in during the game for change of pace will be either FWs or attacking midfielders. And based on current selection, I’m pretty happy with them.

What I’m trying to say is that even though zanetti and cambiasso are great players, they usually don’t make big impact as much as the FWs or attacking midfielders.

Even though my initial reaction was pretty depressing, after having some thoughts, I am becoming a little more optimistic. Vamos Argentina carajo!!

Well 2 months back, not even one Inter player was making it in the squad, atleast now there are 2, or 1 depending on what happens with Milito.

But Milito isnt the main problem, we have enough cover in our attack.
The problem is the midfield..it will be our undoing. Our strikers will have to live off scrap, and pretty much convert any opportunities they get as they wont be getting too many.

The squad could have been more balanced and adoptive with the inclusion of following players:

Defense: Zanetti (can cover RB, LB or even midfield), while chasing a match team will require full backs rather then to keep playing for the whole 90 mins with 4 centre backs

Midfield: Banega, Cambiasso, Lucho (Atleast on of Cambiasso or Banega should have been selected in 23 man squad, Lucho could be a possibility but he has selected Pastore as backup for Veron)

The centre back options are not that bad and milito and gonalo rodriguez have just recovered from career threatning injuries. Regarding Aimar though i am a big fan of him but he has not played a single game for benfica in which he has played the ful 90 mins. Saviola could have been an option but Tevez and Aguero have been preferred and i think they are the right options.

So if the mad man can still include 2-3 players as mentioned above in the final squad Argentina will have a very balanced squad.

Maradona, you’re a great player and always will be…. I think that the 1/4 finals VS Germany was important in Maradona’s mind. Cambiasso missed the last PK and the idiot didn’t forgive him for that. I don’t see any other reasons. For many Pekerboys, that game was the beginning of the end. For others like Lucho, the defeat against Bolivia was considered as an insult for Maradona. If Maradona excludes Pastore, I don’t have any idea how we can play control type futbol after Veron gets tired. Besides Veron is not there anymore. If there is no midfield, how can you control the tempo of the game suited for Messi and attacking co?.

Messi excels with Xavi in Barcelona. Who is our Xavi? anyone? If Mascherano goes down, who will be his backup? anyone? If skills and talent don’t matter, then why don’t we just get the whole domestic league to represent Argentina as an act of Diego’s insane patriotism? Drop Messi as well since he was there also when Bolivia humiliated us 6-1.

Messi excels with AND without Xavi, it’s a myth that Messi/Argentina needs a Xavi.

as good as Xavi is, it’s the ingrained movement, the athletic mobility and the attitude of pressing and creating space for the ball, that is key.

From Diego’s list, I can only see Pastore and Veron. If he exludes Pastore, we only have Veron for one half. I am totally with you regarding a biased manager – which sadly Diego seems to be.

Yet – how many tactician coaches took a team to a WC and came back home with the cup? We can take France for example in 98 and yes they prepared well but you cant tell me that this French team won alone on skill and preparation….we know Domenich is not the greatest tactician.

I also agree with you that some of the players excluded such as Cambiasso and Zanetti Do Have Pride and want to win. But have they not had their chance at a WC and came back home empty? Pekerman did not include Zanetti in the last WC as well. El Pupi played in 98 and 2002, both we times we came back empty handed. Chuchu did great in the last WC and is one of my favs, so I wont deny that I wish he was called. But maybe the European players know them to well, know how they play and how to contain them? I love Zanetti but honestly he did not seem to fit into the NT squad for a long time. He is great…but just does not fit for some reason.

And I agree with you that AFA has forgotten to factor in futbol….it’s all greed and cash on their end man.

I do not agree with the majority of what Diego is doing, but maybe, just maybe what if he is right? I saw a bit of an interview he did on Fox Sports with Niembro and I must say Diego has the idea of what he wants this team to do. I just hope he can translate it properly to the team and not be biased.

I agree that Pastore must remain as part of 23 players. Even teams such as Brazil who love to play counter-attacking football have creative players such as Kaka and Veron is no where close to him as far as skills are concerned. Perhaps for the 1st half he will be OK but in the 2nd half, he will be too tired. Just rewatch Germany to see what I’m saying. He was lost in the 2nd half because he was too tired. I’m willing to give Maradona benefit of the doubt for current selection but if he intends to omit Pastore, then I don’t know what to say.
As far as the next coach after the World Cup, I would prefer someone like Angel Cappa or Carlos Bianchi. I don’t see any other candidate suitable for la seleccion. I would also like to see changes in the AFA. Grondona has been there for too long.

Who knows what will happen in 2014, but looking at current crop of young players, we should be one of the favorites along with Brazil for that tournament.

i am from nigeria and i think that maradona’s chioce is not that bad. only that cambiaso deserve to be on the list. Not everyone here agrees with the list from lagerback either. Argentina has and always had great players it is puting them together to make a wining team that is left. the Squad is very strong it left for maradona to make the best of them. the europeans dont always have as tallented squad as Argentina but they put them together to win trophies. that is what maradona should do.

i’m sure that maradona’s choice is among the best because new players are always a right decision for a energetic team but my only advice for argentina is to play with passion and should play like a team. I am from Bangladesh and I think there are more than 50 million who supports Argentina during the world cup. Anyway, I was lucky to see Maradona’s magic live when I was a kid on both 86 and 90s world cup.

Anyway, as far the current selection is concerned, I would say no selection is far from some controversy. I can not believe when I had to see 1998 Argentina’s squad without Claudio Cannigia, or France Squad without Eric Cantona in the same world cup. So, things happen. Anyway, I agree Gago and Cambiosso should be in the team (and Riquelme retired, so it’s no ones fault he is not in the team) . But I still believe, Maradona could field a strong team that is capable of winning the world cup. I just believe that they would need some luck (which they never had ever since they had it too much in 1990s world cup when they became runners up with a mediocre team).
