Looking Ahead

* Juan Sebastián Verón has rejected a move to D.C. United. The midfielder, currently at Estudiantes, was reportedly set to move this off-season to MLS in a $10 million dollar deal, and had even gone so far as to pick out a house and school for his children in the Washington area, but after listening to the pleas of the Estudiantes faithful desperate for him to remain, Verón chose instead to continue in Argentina. “I’m staying for the fans and my teammates,” said Verón. “I’m comfortable because I feel that I didn’t fail the fans and that I get to stay on with the team. Sometimes, earning more money makes one forget the value of the simple things of life.” Estudiantes will play in next year’s edition of the Copa Libertadores. You can read the full story in Spanish or English.

* One of the most anticipated matches of the weekend sees Liverpool hosting Manchester United this Sunday on Setanta Sports at 8:25AM ET, with title implications on the line for both teams. United’s Carlos Tévez will square off against his international teammate and current Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano; both players you’ll remember were involved in that controversial transfer last season to West Ham United. For Liverpool, this is a must win, as they currently sit in 4th place in the table, 6 points behind the Red Devils who are in 2nd, 1 point behind leaders Arsenal.

* You may want to set your Tivo or expect to lose some sleep if you want to catch the FIFA World Club Cup final this Sunday morning on FSC at 5AM ET between Boca Juniors and AC Milan (if you can avoid the internets you can catch the replay at a more respectable 7PM ET later that night).

Let me know what you all plan on watching this weekend.

Todd,

I hope it is not about hormone growth related kind of thing. Messi definitely needs a rest. Opponents keep playing rough on him, which is terrible thing to watch. He needs some weight like Aguero. It’ll help minimize constant pounding he’s having.

Maxi, You’re welcome.

It’s to late guy’s, I will not longer post on this site.

Perhaps if a petition was started and generated sufficient signatures I might reconsider and come back at a later date.

Ciao

I can seem to understand why Julio Cruz never could perfrom on the national team? Any ideas as he seems ot have all the skills to be a great number 9 but of course his time is passed now . Most likely it was because he was overshadowed by Crespo.

Liverpool boss Benitez confident of Garay signing
tribalfootball.com – December 16, 2007

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is confident of sealing a deal for Racing Santander defender Ezequiel Garay.
The People says Benitez has settled on a fee of £10 million for the Argentine youngster, though whether he will move to Anfield in January will depend on the club’s American owners.

toddutah, Pavonne was signed from Estudiantes La Plata last year after he helped them win the Argenitian Apertura. He now plays for Betis. He struggled for a long time but now not only he is the leading scorer for his team but he is also the Liga on the Liga board.
it’s glad to see he is finding his fitness now.

Yes, Pavone scored a ton of goals playing alongside Veron, when Simeone took Estudiantes La Plata to the argie championship.

Glad to see him doing so well now. It is funny how we all complain about finding this true number 9 and yet when you look at the top scorers from the top leagues you find the Argys well represented :) . Milito Messi Aguero, Cruz, and now Pavone and Lopez. Maaybe we all just want the perfect player that only comes along once every twenty years for a country when we already have plenty of talent to prevail.

completely agree Toddutah. well said. I dont think the problem is a LACK of #9s, i think the problem is a lack of matching attacking pair. and this is something only BASILE could fix. he has all the talents, all the pieces, he just needs to study this team, and put the right players in the right places.

brazil wins (yet again) the award for the best player in the world…..
a tale of two countries:

brazil has 8 wins, 3 second place and 3 third places in history :)
argentina has 0 wins, 2 second places and 0 third places :(

enough said. brazil is soccer. the rest are all spectators and fillers.

don’t cry for me argentina…..

I believe the NT coaches should focus on our defence and our tactical behaviour when we lose the ball, not on our attack. We will never have problems upfront.

Maxi, I do believe we also have to find the players who will open the field, especially on the left side. The diagonal cuts are great but if that’s all you do all the time, opponent defenders get your number too easy. We need a guy who can take the ball all the way to the left corner. and kick back a cross. We don’t have that type of a player. What do you say?
