European Cup Draws Announced

December 21st, 2007 | By: Christian | 47 Comments »

Knockout rounds for both the Champions Leage and Uefa Cup were announced this morning, and as usual, Argentina is well represented in both competitions.

What’s your take? Personally Liverpool and Inter Milan is my pick for best draw in the CL; as for the UC, that marathon of a tournament still has a long way to go, but in this round Bolton v Atlético Madrid could be one worth watching.

Champions League: Ties to be played February 19/20 & March 4/5
Celtic v Barcelona
Lyon v Man Utd
Schalke 04 v FC Porto
Liverpool v Inter Milan
Roma v Real Madrid
Arsenal v AC Milan
Olympiacos v Chelsea
Fenerbahce v FC Sevilla

UEFA Cup: Ties to be played February 13/14 and 21
Aberdeen v Bayern Munich
AEK Athens v Getafe
Bolton v Atlético Madrid
Zenit St Petersburg v Villarreal
Galatasaray v Bayer Leverkusen
Anderlecht v Bordeaux
SK Brann v Everton
FC Zürich v Hamburg SV
Rangers v Panathinaikos
PSV Eindhoven v Helsingborg
Slavia Prague v Tottenham
Rosenborg v Fiorentina
Sporting Lisbon v FC Basle
Werder Bremen v Braga
Benfica v Nurnberg
Marseille v Spartak Moscow

barca lost to Real coz without messi they are simply lose the attacking force, but Inter won with Cruz and Cambiasso scored. Happy Christmas to all.

Without Messi, Barca were surprisingly weak. Real played just like they need to play to beat Barca at Nou Camp. So sad that it was that guy Baptista who scored the winning goal. Every time I see him, I think of what happened in the final this summer…..The Argies at Real should leave!! There is no place for them in that team. It is so sad to see them throwing away their talents like that. Higuain, Saviola and Gago should leave ASAP. They are not good enough for that team. Heinze should also leave…he is not the type of left back that a team like Real need…he is too weak going forward.

Merry Christmas to all of you!!! I love this blog.

I am probably being a little sensitive but I can’t help but feel some negativism towards me and my thoughtful posts.

I’ve read some of the responses to my remarks and quite frankly find them baffling. I start of by congratulating Inter and yet find myself being accused of being a sore loser?

I point out (along with all the major papers) on a soft goal let in by Dida and get accussed of disrespecting Cambiasso? Was it a brilliant strike?

I point out Kaka’s brilliant move on Samuel and get accused of being a sadist and finding joy in Samuel being hurt?

I note how Argentina was Prematurely …yes I said prematurely which to those of you who don’t understand suggests they should have went farther in the tournament) a compliment, and reached the final of Copa America ( a compliment to them again) and this is anti Argentine?

I share a beautiful latin saying “perfer et obdura; dolor hic tibi proderit olim” and some of you see offense in that?

In the spirit of your celebrations I just say lets say it’s water under the bridge. I myself am an antitheist along with Hawkins, Hitchens, Nietzsche, Jefferson and Einstein to Name a few. Since there is no football being played now I will leave you when a nice passage from Einstein to reflect on over these holiday’s

“I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own — a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotism.”

Happy Logic………and I can’t wait for the football to begin.

It’s hilarious that our resident troll John, a self-proclaimed antitheist (although I highly doubt it), supports a club that the star player is Kaká– a man who is open & vocal about his faith. The irony is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

Back to all things Albiceleste, the rubbish rumour I’ve read recently: Saviola to Bolton. Nonsense.

Non-rumour news: Ayala turned down an offer to join River Plate.

Barcas defeat is now branded as Ronaldinhos failure and he is unfairly being accused and abused in public for all that has been happening in the nou camp. It reminds a lot like Riquelme situation in Villareal where the club and the supporters forgets all that was achieved in the past and the stars contributions and speculate based on a picture painted by the media. Atleast Barca has been quite supportive of Ronnie all this time and hope they dont make a mess of things after this(like Villareal)

Messi has become the key to barcelona now and a lot of it has to do with how many players the other teams are having to use to mark him. Even when he does not score he opens things up for the rest of the players. It is becoming eveident that Ronaldinos game has changed in that he can no longer beat other players off the dribble as he once did. he can still pass and shoot but the fans can not accept this change and Ronnie needs to realaize what is happening and adapt his game to his other talents. As for real they do in so many ways remind be of brasil. They are strong on the counter and very big and athletic but do not play the beautiful game. Lets hope they do not win the league again. Inter is all Argy is form and spirit and any argy with the chance should go there. feliz navidad y ano nuevo a todos :)

Interesting point by toddutah. True that Dinho has lost his acceleration but how about his dribbling skills? Well, I have not played much football myself, but those of you who are decent players can help me answer this perhaps:
Does age takes away the agility required for dribbles? if then is 27 the average age when one start loosing it? That sounds scary, our lil chap Messi then need to really focus on mastering the other essential skills to sustain in top flight till he turn 32 or 34:)

Barcelona has lost their counter attack, this is why they are so poor on the road.

Ronaldinho is one of my top three players in the world, but he really has messed things up for himself. He should still be the official best player in the world (the unofficial best player in the world – the real one – to me is riquelme).

And I don’t really get why Dinho let Messi take over Barcelona. Athletes of that caliber are usually crazily competitive (like Messi) and they work their asses off when they see a threat. Dinho didn’t do that – I don’t understand him at all.

As for Messi – he’s so needed now. Barcelona still has a chance in the champions league, but without messi, they won’t do it.

I have played for 32 years and at a semi pro level was pretty good. The truth is that if you stay fit you will not see much loss in speed until around 30 but injuires and fitness levels play a role. Also as you get older you might lose some speed but your overall game should continue to imporve as your skill set increases and your mind and vision grows. the trully great players will continue to grow their skill set and not just rest on their current form. Sadly I think that Dinho has not imporved in other areas and let himself slow down that mili seocnd that makes such a big difference. The truth is that the players that stay and shape will last much longer and there skills will last longer but when you are 20 you can eat and drink whatever you want and go ouit the next day and compete aat 26 is not the same but if you taek care you can actually peek at 28 29 ? My best futbol was at the age of 33 as I look back now that i am 40.

I have watched many skilled players come in my league at 20 with speed and skill and by 26 by out of shape and slower and have watched many players come in at 20 and be just as fast and more skilled at 30. The difference becomes more than anything else work ethic and desire to compete. How many of you work with people that are lazy? It is the same in futbol in that the lazy ones eventually can no longer just rely on speed and skill if they dont put in the work off the field. example number one has to be Adriano of Brasil. If he was fit and determined is there any doubt of how good he would be ? The trully great ones are a combo of Talent skill and mental talent and skill. i believe that Messi will prove ot have both skill sets but only time will tell.

Heh players like Zidane, Pirlo and Riquelme can play well into their thirties without losing much of their effectiveness, because they lacked pace to begin with. Kaka on the other hand…

I think it’s possible Ronaldinho might be a bit slower than he used to be, but he’s got game!!
He should still be a fantastic player.
The problem must be in his mind.
And whatever is in his mind right now, doesn’t look like it’s football.
