Argentina Friendly in U.S. Next Month

2008 Olympics

A proposed friendly between Argentina and Guatemala in the U.S. appears to be on.

According to a stories posted today in Prensa Libre and Diario Olé, the Argentina Under 23 squad will face the Guatemala senior team in Los Angeles on February 6th. The time and venue have yet to be determined. Originally the plan was to have the senior squad play, but it appears that AFA will use the date instead to prepare for the 2008 Olympic games taking place later this year in China.

Said Argentina Under-23 coach Sergio Batista, “The idea is to organize a series of friendlies with [the Under-23 squad] to be prepared in the best possible way for the [Olympics]. And it appears the first could be in the United States.”

The date of the match does fall on a FIFA international date which means Batista could in theory choose players from the European leagues, and the Olympics themselves do not interfere with any WC qualifying matches over the summer, but regardless, expect to see the younger players start instead, with Batista specifically mentioning Messi, Agüero, Ustari, Gago, and more.

UPDATE: JANUARY 18TH:
AFA’s
website is saying that the game will take place at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum at 7:30PM PT. A check on the coliseum’s official doesn’t mention the game, but expect ticket information to be posted soon.

Ya, Saviola played horribly. It was embarassing I turned off midway.

To make matters worse, he reinjured himself!

Toddutah, my two cents on the young players you were asking about:
(I hope Golazo corrects me where I’m wrong.)
Ezequiel Garay, plays in Spain for Racing de Santander, he is a 6′ 4″ central defender.
Federico Fazio, central defender, 6′ 5″, plays for Sevilla.
Pablo Zabaleta, right lateral or right inside midfielder. Signed to Espanyol. One more of Tocalli’s boys.
Mathias Cahais is another central defender, tall too, plays for Boca Juniors.
Juan Manuel Torres, if he’s the same one I know, who plays for San Lorenzo, I believe he’s a midfielder.
Lastly, I don’t think any of them is a lefty or plays on the left lateral side.
Saludos

As far as i am aware Cahais normally plays central but can also play on the left.

Hey John….I am 100% norwegian, but I will always support Argentina. Even if Argentina were facing my own country in the world cup final I would not think twice about who I would support. I love Argentina, I follow Norway aswell, but Argentina are real love. Do you find that strange???

Based on reports from Tyc Sports, some of the names that could be called up to L.A. are:

Mascherano, Demichelis, Gago, Banega, Agüero, Ezequiel Garay, Gabriel Paletta, Federico Fazio, and now Riquelme.

The game will start at 7:30PM PT.

Rune,

I find it a little odd not to cheer for your own country. I have some friends that do the same as you. There were born in Canada or the States and cheer for Argentina or Italy or Germany ect….

I can’t do it and I personally don’t feel it’s right.

regards,

Christian keep the dialogue open and do not censor any comments unless they fall into the category of being racist and so on.

My second post ever:

I am 19 years old and live in Texas. Both my parents immigrated here, my father from Guatemala, and my mom from Argentina, needless to say, I’m ecstatic about the game coming up. When it comes down to it though, in this contest, and in any other soccer/football/futbol match I always support Argentina, yes even when they played the US national team.

When it comes to the other sports in national competitions, like in baseball or swimming I will support the American team. I was born here and I do feel a sense of pride for my nation, but here soccer is different. The excitement for it here is no where near where it is in any other part of the world. I was lucky enough to go to the bombonera to watch a game with grandmother a couple years ago and it was unreal. There is nothing here that matches that sense of pride or excitement.

I guess it is possible to say that I jumped onto the bandwagon but it is very clear here, that the “White” population for the most part crams Man Utd down everyones throats, while all the people who are here from other nations, at least the Hispanic population either usually speak of either the Mexican league, or La Liga and the wondrous Real Madrid or Barcelona.

I’m really sorry for the long post. lol I am in no way offended by thinking that I am “backstabbing” my country because I’m not. I have cousins who support the German National team and to them the bundesliga is where it is at. I am sure that it is the US’ fault for never supporting soccer just as we tend to usually try and be “unique.” Times are changing now though. I do think Beckham coming over is a good thing because it did attract more attention. I, living in Houston, love the Houston Dynamo, but since coming over here, they play at the University of Houston’s backyard American football field. It is very exciting news that they may construct an actual soccer stadium though, as that is apparently in the works.

Cliff notes:
due to American tradition, soccer has never been a big sport. my ma is from Argentina and because of that i was brought up on empanadas and mate. i support the argie team and always have. soccer is gaining popularity here which is exciting but until the MLS or the US team are considered a power like the Euro/Latin teams are people will continue to dismiss it. This obviously leads into the debate of nationalistic proportions but this is an argie football thread, and a response to a topic that was brought up earlier. Sorry for confusion or things that don’t make sense

Oh, and John, I don’t mind your question, I think though that the way you worded your question gave the impression that you were taking the piss.

In my case, I would root for the U.S. Not because of loyalty or patriotism, but because I believe in the future of the sport in this country and want to support it. Club level there is no such argument: I am a River Plate fan, no questions asked. I may live in Chicago, but with all due respect, I have no time for the Fire.

What makes it weird for me is that I was born in the US to a Guatemalan father and Puerto Rican mother AND lived in Argentina twice. Suffice it to say, my Spanish is quite unique.

The troll is making this blog too personal.
And the truth is that I’m not interested in fake nationalisms.
Here’s hoping we can go back to our argy football without the extra-curricular stuff.
Christian, if you go to the french blog, for instance, you’ll find the same troll we have here, John (ex Ali), trash-talking about Zidane, the same way he does here with argy players.
Everything about him is negative, always against the stream.
If we talk about Inter, he talks about Milan.
If we talk about Messi, he talks about Kaka.
Argentina, Brazil.
Black, white.
Tall, short.
It’s never ending.
It’s too bad we can’t get rid of him for use of negative content.
Allez…
Regards…
Whatever…

Argentinian teenager Franco Di Santo is set for a move to Chelsea.

A £3.4million deal with Chilean club Audax Italiano has yet to be confirmed but the 18-year-old is already looking forward to training with his heroes.

Di Santo, who holds an Italian passport, has shone in Argentina’s junior teams and said: “It is going to be a dream to be next to Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Andriy Shevchenko and Nicolas Anelka.

“I am going to watch how they play and if I am called on to be part of the team, I will give my maximum and do what I do best. I will fulfil whatever the manager Avram Grant requests of me.

“To be changing next to Drogba will be something out of another world.”

Good post mfgt2 your passion for the game is evident. Keep posting.

Christian I thought you deleted one of my posts and that was why I referenced censorship. I support my country for the very same reason you do the States.

Albo you don’t come across as a very likeable. Also I want to be crystal clear on a couple of points you brought up.

1. I post using John —not Ali or Ken
2. I do post on the French blog among others. However what I state there about ZZ is not trash talking. I take to task the apologists for him and his shameful attack on Materazzi.

Saludos …………..and try smiling and laughing once in awhile…..lifes to short.

Real Madrid chief Pedja warns Atletico over Aguero interest
tribalfooball.com - January 17, 2008

Real Madrid sports chief Pedja Mijatovic has stoked the fires ahead of their derby with Atletico by admitting Sergio Aguero could be a future transfer target.
Mijatovic declared: “He is a great soccer player, a young person, with a big future. With the experience he’s gained, he has responded very well.

“He would be an objective not only of Real Madrid, but of many important teams. But he already belongs to an important team, which we sometimes forget.”

Atletico Madrid monitoring Independiente whiz Pato
tribalfooball.com - January 17, 2008

Atletico Madrid are monitoring Independiente starlet Patricio ‘Pato’ Rodriguez.

The 17 year-old has been likened to Atletico star Sergio Aguero and was outstanding for Independiente in a friendly on the weekend against Boca Juniors.

Atletico have been following Pato’s progress and will move quickly for the youngster should he make an impact in the Argentine championship this season.

The youngster said: “I’m proud that they compare me with him, but El Kun is a genius… I’ve hardly begun to take my first steps and I know that I need to learn a lot. I want to continue like this, slowly, calmly… The truth is I could not have hoped that so many things could happen for me in such a short time.”

Zinedine Zidane is the greatest soccer player of all time and this is coming from an Argentine. I get personally offended if someone sas something negative about him.
