2008 Olympics: Argentina vs Brazil LIVE
Argentina are mere hours away from facing their biggest test yet in these 2008 Olympic games, when they play their fierce rivals Brazil in the semifinals. On the line will be a date with the winner of the Nigeria-Belgium matchup in the final to be played this Sunday. You can watch the game live on MSNBC at 9AM ET, or at NBColympics.com bt using this link.
Of course, the game which so much more than just a semifinal. For Argentina, it will be the pride of retaining the gold medal won in Athens 4 years ago, to restore confidence in the squad after a less then brilliant Olympic campaign, and an opportunity for revenge against Brazil who have dominated los albicelestes in major competitions recently. Brazil meanwhile struggled to get past the quarterfinals against Cameroon, and with embattled coach Dunga practically on the chopping block, you can expect Brazil to come out hard as they look to win their first ever Olympic gold medal.
This could be an epic showdown between 2 of the biggest footballing nations in the world. Please use the space below to leave comments as you follow the match. Unfortunately there will be no liveblog, but please feel free to leave your thoughts below. Enjoy, y Vamo’ Argentina!!

thx anand for the translation. much appreciated

What a nice game that was, Riquelme performance was exeptional. I guess I was wrong about what I said earlier and I accept it, now if Riquelme can have the same performance in evry game it would be amazing.
In other news the argentine squad that will start against belarus tomorrow has been confirmed by Basile.
Carrizo
Zanetti, Burdisso, Coloccini, Heinze
Luis González, Pablo Ledesma, Cambiasso, Gutiérrez
Tevez Denis
Hope for another goleada!
Game is 10am central us time

After the Netherlands game, i posted how happy i was to be against Brazil, i totally ripped Aguero, and I hope some one told him because he did everything i thought, kept onsides, was there in the box, and played with confidence, came thru when we needed it. Not over though, Nigeria is the next test. Dale Argentina! Oro o nada! Ifwe play like we did today 4-0 vs NIG.

Carrizo for Pato is a nice surprise.
Maxi Rodriquez misses it because of an injury.

Oh, Brazil has talent to spare. They can play more offensively, and they will after they get rid of Dunga. The best thing that could have happened to them was to lose this game to get rid of Dunga.
But I think that what we saw today was a coming of age for many players. Messi was uncontainable, and Aguero showed what he is about. This is how he plays. This level was his normal level. Messi and Aguero turned the Brazilian defense inside out- they had no answer for it. Add Riquelme and his mastery of the midfield, and you have a frightening offense. If they add to this for the next few years (Tevez wasn’t even there!), they will be the most dangerous offense in the world.

Di Maria has been outstanding. He seems to have a great mind for tournaments, big games. Gago also really stepped up – i still think that he needs to take more control of his area, but he was everywhere today. He was playing like a madman. Masch is a known lion already – indispensable. Garay was impressive.

I also want to mention Checho Batista because he decided to stick with Agüero after two bad matches. This time el Kun scored twice and he caused the penalty kick play.
Batista’s tool to beat Brazil was defensive pressure across the field.
As you can imagine when you are doing personal marking it really doesn’t matter what formation you choose because you’re running after an opponent.
I think there’s basically 3 defenders or 4 defenders (maybe plus Masche).
The rest is continuously adapting and changing.
I like to see them all rotating (around Gago) and finding the openings.
We are probably the last NT to play football with the ball down on the ground.

I’ve been criticizing Batista, and while this result was coming, he deserves a lot of credit. His tactics worked great, and his confidence was really important, I think. And like Albo just mentioned, he had the cojones to stick with Aguero, and he got justly rewarded for it. Great job.

Yes ALBO it worked like this: 7 players defending + the 3 upfront helping and adapting. Everyone defended.
I’ll post tomorrow. I’ll read you guys too.
All I want to say is good night & sweet dreams. It was a very nice day.
Thank you so much Argentina.

zzzzzzzzz…zzzzzzzzzzzz…gooolazo…zzzzzzz…..zzzzzzzzz.

Argentina deserved to win against Brazil. They played better. The battle was fought in the mid-field; Mascherano and Gago were very important in this argentian victory. Now Dunga can say bye bye to Brazil’s team. Why didn’t he call for players such Denilson from Arsenal, Julio Baptista from Roma, or the young star Renato Augusto from Bayern Leverkusen?. Their midfielders were just too weak and inexperienced; Hernanes and Lucas were note able to control Messi, Aguero, and Riquelme. In order to beat Argentina you have to play a physical game and Brazil did not. In spite of this disaster, in Latin America we hope Nigeria beats Argentina because in most countries we consider argentinians as racists and arrogants.

Yesterday’s result was a fair and great result. And for once, I wanted Brazil to lose so the team can play good football again. Dunga’s head will definitely roll (unless the jokers at CBF think otherwise).

Um, I would say that in Latin America most people do want Argentina to win. We (meaning me as a non-Arg) know of Arg’s rep as snobs and racists (whether fair or unfair), but when push comes to shove, we usually want any Latin American team to win over a non-Latin American team in big competitions. Or maybe that’s just me and my family.

>>>>we consider argentinians as racists and arrogants.>>>
That statement in itself sounds pretty racist and arrogant to me.

New thread up. Short, but sweet.

Skywalker thanks… Its a shame NBC does’nt cover one of the biggest rivalries in the biggest sport in the world on The Website. Defensive mid to the rescue. Shut down the counter, you shut Brazil down.. The new Brazilian players are’nt as good.. thats what it is. They never are i guess… no gold medals..? five world cups, and no gold medals. crazy stuff. And we spanked them in the u-21 wc.

by the way we are looked at as snobs and racisits and it sucks. Bolivians are like Mexicans down in ARG, yanks.. some people like them, some don’nt, some people talk smack, that kind of thing… also, there was the Patagonia thing and a little arrogance with the whole European feel of Buenos Aries. But hey man, don’t mind the haters.. Out youth owns the field right now so…

Jairo and Alexa
I find it amusing that some americans make comments about racism and arrogance. Maybe we should ask the Afro americans and Indians what the fellow white americans did (and are still doing )to them to get a slightly clearer picture about racism and arrogance, before making ignorant remarks as above. I have heard ignorant remarks about South Africa from the same source…..
Check the scoreboard!!!!!!!!!
From a South African and Argentinian…..

Dear Jairo:
Are you implying that Argentina is the only Latin America country that has racist and arrogant people? Hmm…racism and arrogance exist everywhere my friend. Is your country of birth free of racist? I seriously doubt it. Stop stereotyping. Plus, Argentina has opened its doors to many other Latin America immigrants, such as Bolivians, Paraguayuans, Peruvians, etc., in case you didn’t know. Brazil, with its enormous African population, has never had a black president. Blacks make much less money than whites there. Is the pot calling the kettle black here? People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw bricks.

sure there is racism everywhere as we inherited it from the europeans but while some countries have fought it and made great strides against it like the united states which is ignorantly criticized by people who freeze in time to judge a country my experience both in argentina and with argentinians outside of argentina is that far too many portenos do hold a “better than thou” attitude and are racists and discriminate against others. even when I was in the provinces I noticed the dislike that the provinces have for those from buenos aires. a very similar situation exists in mexico where those from the capital, mexico df, are disliked elsewhere in the country because they also think themselves to be the cream of the continent. I have nothing but the best memories from my stay in argentina and from non-portenos I have befriended in canada and the united states.
