Lanus and Estudiantes Crash Out of Copa

May 7th, 2008 | By: Christian | 125 Comments »

Two more teams from Argentina were eliminated from the Copa Libertadores last night, first Estudiantes who despite winning 2-1 last night at home to LDU Quito, lost 3-2 on aggregate, while Lanus meanwhile drew with Atlas in Mexico 2-2, but also went out 3-2 over both legs. After Arsenal’s woeful display in the group stage, that now leaves three teams from Argentina out of this years Copa.

As for the three teams that remain, it isn’t looking much better. Boca will be in Brazil tonight to face Cruziero, and althought they won 2-1 in the Bombonera in the first leg, conceeding that late away goal may come back to haunt them. Reports in the press indicate that the Boca squad received a rude “welcome” from Cruziero fans who banged drums, set off fireworks, and played loud music outside the team’s hotel in Belo Horizonte.

On Thursday of course, San Lorenzo will travel to the Monumental to face River Plate. Though el ciclon are arguably the most in-form team in Argentina, and won the first leg 2-1, River have yet to be beaten in the Monumental this season, so really anything is possible.

What may not be possible though, is to have more than one team from Argentina advance deep in the Copa.

great post Albo.. to add to Tevez’s accomplishments, while he may not score a lot of goals like the great strikers of our era, he does score the lion’s share of match saving/winning goals for his team. While Man U will have been no where without Ronaldo this season, Tevez arguably scored 6/7 of the team’s 10 most important goals this season, most of which were at the death (1st and 2nd half). I just wish he could score like this when he plays for the NT…

Los “gallináceos” de River Plate, finally got real and came from behind 1-2 to destroy Gimnasia La PLata (who???) 4-2. :-)
Actually, great reaction by Simeone and his players. It was nice to see Ortega get serious and play as a real # 10.
Further info, by River fans like Christian or Gonzalo.

the this squad for the upcoming friendly is not balanced at all. only 4 defenders and 4 midfielders. there is no excuse for this. more players must be called, for this is unacceptable. don’t get me wrong i like the players that are called up but we need at least 2 more players. i am starting to worry alot about the di’ mechilis sitiuation he should be a part of this team his absence an the inclusion of collocini is a reason for concern. he needs to be apart of this tournament not just for his sake for the nt on a whole. we need a solid centre half for now and the future and this experience is so vital. on a personal note i would much rather see di’ mechilis make the olympics over riquelme and macherano for the other 2 played in past two tournaments and di’mechilis did not. however here is my line up. 4-3-3

ustari
zabaleta—fazio—colocini-asnaldi
banega—–gago—sosa
messi—hugain—aguero

Messi will be playing in the olympics, he confirmed it today in an interview with Olé. Hope we can win the gold medal again.

Demichelis seems to have given up the fight for the olympics, it’s sad but these things happen. Kaka will probably be forced to stay at home for the very same reasons.

there are 3 young promising players in the Sevilla Atletico which is the Sevilla reserve team. it used to be four but with the way fazio has been playing lately, he is definitely in the first team.
1. Emiliano Daniel Armenteros, he is a maxi rodriguez-like player and also a good scorer
2. Lucas Trecarichi , dubbed the new messi. he rejected to play for the spain team and is choosing the argie NT
3. Diego Perotti, another efficient midfielder

i think it’s time that they see some first team action.

I believe any of our “old” players should participate to the Olympics. They have played too much this year and are often injured (Riquelme). Just look at Cambiasso, Milito, Riquelme, Aimar, Crespo and so on who haven’t recovered from this really exhausting year.

AURELIUS,
Mascherano: +++++

I wish I could have seen the River-San Lorenzo game. I suppose D’Alessandro has given white hair to Aguilar. Or maybe not, Aguilar owns River only to eat like a pig.

Riquelme has never been often injured. This injury that he recently had was the first major one in years.

He does seem to get tired, probably because he carries so much responsibility for his team that, in the course of a game, he makes the most passes and holds the ball the longest. That whole “laziness” label he has is quite incorrect, if you look at the stats.

The Aimar thing is too bad. Maybe he can get out of Zaragoza, which is such a sinking ship. But I think that the ship has sailed in terms of the national team.

I heard on a podcast the Garay is considered the most exciting you defender in the world right now. All the big teams want him. And he scores a lot. Hopefully Barcelona will get him.

ALEXA,

All our players are tired, Riquelme included. Stamina is not like passion, it is limited. Being tired is one of the reasons why Argentina lost in 2002 (2007?). We all want our players physically ready at 100%. The Japanese “nightmare” must not happen again. This year, games high frequency has destroyed Milito, and badly affect Messi & Riquelme (twice) Cambiasso, old Zanetti (dead, no WC 2010) & Crespo, … These people are humans, not robots and no need to be a doctor to understand that thigh muscles are alert injuries. Of course, AFA doesn’t care. I’m glad to see Munich & Liverpool giving their veto concerning Micho and Mascherano. Milan are doing the same with Pato & Kaka. The clubs know perfectly that playing a summer competition in Pékin, one of the most polluted cities in the world, is going to badly affect the players’ 2008/2009 season. Obviously.

Batista should have given a chance to Valeri instead of Riquelme and to Biglia instead of Mascherano. We have plenty of young talent that can win easily the Olympics and let 3 of our elder players to recover of 2006/2007/2008 seasons.

By the way, it’s pretty funny that Blatter has created rules to not let players have games by high altitude in order to protect their health. It is the same Blatter that let 18 year old kids play 100 games per year at the highest level.

That’s very true, Maxi. The Olympics really should be a place to blood the young players. I think that Riquelme should be there to teach them how it’s done, learn from the master sort of stuff.

The Olympics mean so much to Arg and Brazil, which is frankly touching, because it shows how much they care about their countries’. But the pollution is really going to affect them.

KEN,
Ribéry has always been a monster. He hasn’t developped that much this year. He’s just in a good club.

Talking about Messi moving from Barca is a bit ridiculous. It will never happen except if Abramovitch sends 1 billion dollar to Laporta.

Hello guys!
Some thought about this Abramovich and Chelsea and Messi thing. One school of thought is Abramovich actually wants his club to play the football that we all like here. Thats the reason Mourinho was fired in the first place. He was happy with the trophies Mourinho was getting, but he was tired of the machine like football. He wanted attractive football. He believes Messi, Aguero can get that to him. He also believed Sheva would be a step in that direction too, other than being a pal. I have read many a times about Abramovich wanting stylish football. I actually do not hate him. I actually see him to be a guy who likes good football like we all do. He wants his club to play that school of football. He is trying for that. And if he succeeds, because of his money, WHY NOT! Great! we get to see a better Chelsea. That will be actually good.

My Dear Maxilopez,
Thanks for your response. I am very concern about
Messi’s future. He cannot do it all by himself
at Barca. Thanks again.

TO ALFIO:
Where do you think Messi should end up?
If a player does not want to play
for a club, eventually he will be released.
The perfect example is Hargreaves who was transferred
to Man utd after he indicated his wish..
Hope to hear from your thoughts. thanks
Kind regards,
KEN

Messi won’t leave Barca, atleast not for a while. Barcelona is rebuilding around Messi. Messi himself said he isn’t going anywhere and he doesn’t want too either. Barcelona gave Messi the healthcare he needed so unless “Tiki” goes mental and does sell him the only two clubs he’ll end up in are Inter Milan or Chelsea. All these reports about bidding on Messi are just a load of bullshit.
