Guille Stars in MLS Conference Semifinal Tomorrow Night Against Chicago

Guillermo Barros Schelotto

Let’s talk some MLS. No, really.

Yes, I realize that we are a week away from Diego’s first game in charge against Scotland. I know the news about Mascherano captaining his first game, and Riquelme’s absence from the squad, is dominating the headlines. And I also know that for most of you (really, most of us), watching MLS or even thinking about it at this time of year in practically unthinkable. So I get it.

But regardless of your feelings about Major League Soccer, it’s hard to not be impressed by the contribution of Guillermo Barros Schelotto, the former Boca Juniors legend who, since his move to the States last year, has become one of the finest players in league, almost singlehandedly leading the Columbus Crew to a semifinal match up this Thursday against the Chicago Fire in MLS Cup.

For years, the Crew were an afterthought in the league, but they now find themselves only two wins away from a league title, and el Mellizo, whose stellar performance this season has made him the leading candidate for MVP honors, has been largely responsible for their success. But perhaps more importantly then helping the Crew, he has been credited with bringing a newfound respect and heightened visibility on a league that has struggled to find its voice.

So yes, I will admit it, as a Chicagoan AND a River Plate fan, I’ll be pulling for Guille this Thursday. He’s one of the most decorated, most successful players to ever come from Argentina, and I think it’s great to see him transfer those skills here to the U.S. It’s a wonderful representation of the best of Argentina, and it will bring nothing but good to soccer in this country, and frankly I think it’s a honor to see such a great player still performing a such a level.

On a personal note, let me extend my congratulations to longtime visitor Rune on the birth of his new baby girl, Ariela. And to everyone else, thanks for all of your posts these past few weeks. They’ve been a joy to read, and I can’t wait until next week. Chau chau.

Maradona’s likely team would be: Juan Pablo Carrizo; Javier Zanetti, Martin Demichelis, Gabriel Heinze, Emiliano Papa or Nicolas Burdisso; Maxi Rodriguez, Fernando Gago, Javier Mascherano, Jonas Gutierrez or Luis Gonzalez; Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez.

This is from Sporta Ya website.

RUNE,
You should try to bring solutions instead of always criticizing & « repeating » what the common soccer fans tell us here everyday. Concerning Heinze, you should ask yourself at least these questions. Is Heinze the kind of central defender dependant on the players around him? Can he perform well if the two defensive mids & the central defender on his side aren’t? And for our NT, who can play in a 3-men defence and hasn’t to learn how to, next 3 years? Sorry to say this but I’ll be honest: when I read you, I only see pessimism, always.

ALBO,
All the world know that there aren’t “friendlies” for Argentina NT. I remember that Roberto Ayala said one day that it was a reason why they all failed in 2002. They arrived in Asia completely dead. This is another message that the MAFIOSO Grondona ignored with Renova.

Maradona, Maradona, Maradona… everybody in the press talk about him. It’s becoming FC Maradona VS Scotland. Nobody is talking about the players. I love this. He’s our Mourinho in terms of image. He absorbs all the pressure.

What I love to is that he knows Messi is too individual. I remember the time, 2 years ago, when I was criticized here because I was pointing this aspect of Messi. Maradona will show people that Messi is far from his full potential.

For me, Maradona is perfect for the moment. No big mistake. The only thing I’m concerned about is his tactics! Will Bilardo have enough influence??? That’s the question!

We must not take the friendly too seriously. It’s Maradona’s first game, the only objective for him is to meet the players and talk to the seniors about their future. Maradona will bring a little revolution with competition between the players. This game will be a test for Heinze. In 4 months, our defence may be totally new, our system too. I think we’re gonn a play a simple 4-3-1-2 tomorrow.

Maradona is a winner. He wants to us to always perform well. For him, the winning habit that we are all waiting for must start with this friendly.

I believe in the tandem.

Cavenaghi last news for Sir AURELIUS :) The press is pressurizing a little bit Laurent Blanc asking why this serial gol killer isn’t playing more in big games. The coach said, almost ashamed of himself: “It kills me when Cavenaghi doesn’t play”. It’s not common to see the French press defending a player like that…

Scotland has gone Maradona mad. Partly for beating England in 1986. He received a crystal hand on a ball from the Daily Record today, partyl for the sheer magentism he has always drawn for his career on and off the pitch.

Sadly we do have the diatribes coming out ie cheat , reprobate, lowlife etc mainly from the English tabloid media and bitterness over the 86 defeat , forgetting the 66 Rattin incident , Owen diving in 2002 etc but thats what one would expect from any media biased towards its own NT.

Maradonas wundergoal is now apparently an own goal from Butcher !

I hope Diego can focus on the tema as he will be an undoubted motivator and at this level with Bilardo doing the coaching then thats often what players require rather than anything else.

With Argentinas players it will be a double benefit to have this idol, and his experience on board.

Personally I cannot wait to see how it pans out and neither can the footballing world either. This could either be the start of the gtreat adventure or yet another trip up another dark alleywith no end in sight for the 24 year old drought come 2010.

Messi like a young Diego is maturing his game with the crux of the team laid at his feet by Guardiola. He knows it too. And often his isolation as a player is because his footballing brain works faster than his teammates which he is now accomodating.

Messi in tandem with the weapons we have upfront should make anyone quake with fear on the pitch.

Thanks Maxi once again for your information. If Cavegols release clause is matched at the moment it would see likely he would leave. I cannot understand Blancs reasoning.

Surely you want your best players and the second rated striker in Ligue Une after Savidan in ? My guess is that despite the credit crunch one of the EPL sides will go in for him. 26 goals in 27 games as you say exceeds his scoring ratio with River.

And I’m sure FC real ambition is to don the Argentina jersey and may feel he needs a move in order to do so.

It could be risky as it might take a while to settle down again but whats life without risk ?

A year ago we were wondering who would replace Crespo now we have a plethora of candidates. Zarate is improving as a team player and he and Lavezzi at Napoli are instrumental in their teams being near top of the Calcio.

I am still surprised why Wenger does not go in for more Argentines since Nelson Vivas ? With the chances created there FC could probably rack up 30 in one season compared to Adebayor who socres about 1 in 5 chances and Bendtner who is not exactly even in the Elkjaar class.

Saludos amigos. :)

Just out by Infobae:

Agüero had to leave the team in Glasgow and fly back home to Madrid.
Seems Gianinna Maradona his having some problems with her pregnancy.

The team (without enganche) could be a 4-4-2:

———————Carrizo——————

Zanetti— Demichelis—Heinze—Papa

Jonás G––Gago—Mascherano—Maxi R.

————Lavezzi———Tevez————

This is what is reported for the 10-a side game that Argentina played during the training session.

“Javier Mascherano’s positioning was among the more noteworthy, the Liverpool midfielder deployed in a more advanced role than accustomed to at Anfield.”

INTERESTING HUH! Also, 150 countries have wished to broadcast the game. Isn’t it a shame that USA is not showing it.

Diego Maradona told the press on Wednesday to look forward to big changes with the side compared to when Alfio Basile was in charge.

“You will see a change in the national team. When we begin to work, there will be tactical changes, of players; here the player will be spoilt, and very happy to be part of the national team, and they will defend this shirt like it deserves,” said Maradona.

Maradona claimed that Argentina’s objective is to win the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

“The path to follow is to finish in first place in the World Cup, not to be in the top four. Whether we manage to do this depends in great part on the players, with our support of course. But I don’t like the idea of settling with a top four finish.”

“El Diez” admitted that he is “enjoying” his new role, and that he had “been waiting for the opportunity for a very long time.”

Even if Lionel Messi wasn’t released by Barcelona for the friendly with Scotland, Maradona insisted he will play a key role for his side in the future.

“I want (Messi) him to have freedom to play; so that he can satisfy us on the field; for him to play for the team, but when it comes the time for him to finish, for him to do this, for him to be a team player, a player who can steer the team forward. For him to be the conductor,” he affirmed.

Maradona will officially debut as the coach of Argentina against Scotland in Hampden Park on Wednesday.

Seems that Maradona/Bilardo are starting from the beginning. A classical 4-4-2 with 2 creative, physical, fast forwards. This kind of formation will protect Heinze for sure. The squad will be compact thanks to Jonas & Maxi and we’ll conceed only 1 gol maximum. Too bad Di Maria is injured.

It’s half-time in the Maradona/Grondona battle concerning the “assistants show”. The mafioso is having a rest.

MaxiLopez:
I am certainly not always negative, but you are right about me being always pessimistic and negative when it comes to our defence and our defenders. The reason is simply because I don’t see many solutions. Players like Heinze, Coloccini, Burdisso are simply not good enough to play for Argentina. Demichelis, Diaz and Gabriel Milito…I really don’t trust them 100% either. I miss Ayala, Sensini…even Chamot. I miss the old Samuel…and off course the old Heinze. I believe it is stupidity not to include Gonzalo and Garay in the squad. Gonzalo is a young and modern defender who should at least be given a chance. To answer your “questions”: I have seen Heinze as a left back, as centre back in 4-4-2 and as a left centre back in 3-5-2….the truth now is that he is nowhere near as good as he was some years ago(before the injury in Man Utd), that’s why someone else, like Gonzalo, should be given a chance, if we see Heinze as a centre back(like Diego does). I know Heinze knows how to play in a 3 men defence, but so does Samuel(he was a rock in Bielsa’s 3-4-3 system)…and if Samuel plays a few more good games for Inter, I think he should be called back.

I don’t care if you do not like that I am repeating myself. There not a cats chance in Hell that you can silence me just because I am not as positove as you and most of the others in here are. I criticize when I wanna criticize! And there is a reason for it. I am REALLY CONCERNED about our defence…and it is legal to be critical and criticize and show how concerned you are even if you do not see the any “great solutions to the problems” yourself, isn’t it?? This is often the case with me….I am not sure if there are any solutions to our defensive problems right now, this makes me so sad and I wanna share my sadness and desperation on this subject with you guys, even if I don’t have any great solutions. I just pray that our wonderful attackers will create enough magic and score more goals than we concede….
And I just wanna remind you one thing,MaxiLopez: You are not in a position where you can tell the others in here what to think, not to repeat them selves, or to be more optimistic…if some of us are a little pessimistic and depressed at times, like I am when it comes to our defenders, there is a reason for it!! No one wants to be pessimistic ans sad just for fun. Everyone repeats them selves at times in here…you always talk about Lucho and Cavenaghi…and that’s ok….but maybe you should ask yourself these questions: why don’t they play for big clubs in big leagues? Maybe there’s a reason that they don’t…….

Well, now it is said. Had to get that off my chest. No hard feelings. We know we all want the same thing, to see Argentina as WORLD CHAMPIONS again!

I hope the medias will stop with the hand of god debate. It can only be negative for us especially because of the FIFA. Maradona is really good in communication, he hasn’t fallen in journalists traps. Too bad he’s not insisting on the fact that all this happened decades ago. He’s being almost perfect, though.

RUNE,
You don’t have to take things personaly. I didn’t want to seem rude. It was just some advice.

I believe we have excellent young defenders: Garay, Pareja, GONZALO, Samuel in some months, Coloccini, Fazio. It’s just a matter of choice depending of factors such as experience, ability to play in a 3-men defence, leadership, etc… Maradona is starting everything from zero so lets wait and see.

I’m sure our biggest problem that needs to be solved in priority is the lack of defending attitude of our offensive players that put our central defenders (& midfield) in risky positions. I’m positive Bilardo/Maradona will be able to solve the issue that is the cause of our Copa 2007 defeat and even more.

TODDUTAH,
I don’t know much about Papa. But I have this feeling that he’ll be a good surprise tonight. Maradona has a total faith in him. A player who has the total confidence of his NT coach who is also considered as a myth, is something special. Papa might be at 200%.

RUNE,
Are you saying that Cavenaghi isn’t playing for a top club like Real so he must be ignored? It would mean that in the 90s, Batistuta should have been put on the bench because only playing for la Fiorentina? Alfio basile was thinking like this though.

scoring a goal with one’s hand is just as deceitful as a player trying to get away a foul, and running the risk of permanently injuring a player. i even think it’s worse to commit a foul, at least with scoring a hand goal no body gets physically hurt.

so if you’re a player who has committed a foul, or someone who broke any rule, then you have no right what so ever to complain about that goal.

that’s what i have to say about the hand of god goal.

Match thread up.

I’m stuck at work so unfortunately I’m gonna miss the game, but I’ll see if I can get a torrent later tonight.

I’m confident we’ll see a new and improved squad tonight, who will be looking to impress their idol. A victory against the Scots may not count for much, but it’ll be a good start.

The one & only thing required to win 2010 world cup for Argentina is sharp shooters. Bring the most sharpest shooters of the country into the final team & go home with the world.
Argentina … Crores of fans are waiting impatiently for that moment…
