Copa Libertadores Group Stage Begins Tonight

Copa Libertadores

The group stages of the Copa Libertadores begin this week, with 4 teams from Argentina, San Lorenzo, Estudiantes, River Plate, and Lanús all scheduled for matches in South America’s biggest club competition. Last years winners Boca Juniors will debut next Wednesday, as will Arsenal de Sarandí.

Which of these teams has the best chance of advancing out of their groups? Boca Juniors are clear favorites; the man most responsible for getting them their 6th Copa, Juan Roman Riquelme, is back with the team, and since 2000 los xeneixes have hoisted the trophy 4 times. But like their rivals River Plate, who last won the tournament in 1996, a tough group stage awaits. Both clubs will have to travel to Mexico and Chile, always tricky and difficult places to visit.

Estudiantes have won the Copa three times previously, but have yet to do so since 1970. To advance out of their group they’ll need to face local Primera side Lanus, who like San Lorenzo and Arsenal, will look to win the title for the first time ever in their history.

Despite last years tournament, which featured a few dull fixtures in the opening rounds, this years edition features some of the biggest teams across the continent and Mexico. All matches will be shown live on Fox Sports Español. Click here to see the complete groups.

Tuesday
San Lorenzo @ Caracas FC (VEN) – 5PM ET
Estudiantes @ Cuenca (ECU) – 7:30PM ET

Wednesday
River Plate @ San Martin (PER) – 4:30PM ET

Thursday
Lanús v. Danubio (URU) – 6:30PM ET

Wednesday, February 20th
Boca Juniors @ Maracaibo – Time TBD
Arsenal v. Libertad – Time TBD

the reverse players in England ae all playing well. Leto should ask for a loan to Germany and Insua will probably breakthough next year for the 1st team. Both in two ae three years will be important fo liverpool. While 16 bruna is playing well for the reverse. The “new messi” lucas is getting regulaler playing time for sevilla 2nd team. And now Mauro Icardi is set to be number 9 for barcelonas C team. Not bad fo a 14 year old.

Cavenaghi scored a brace against monaco today, he’s now averaging a goal a game. That’s pretty impressive.

Fernando “Torito” Cavenaghi scored twice in the 0-6 “goleada” at Monaco.
His team, Bordeaux are now 1 point behind the leader Lyon, and 7 points ahead of Nance (in third position).
El Torito has now 8 goals in the last 6 matches!!!
Hello… Coco… can you hear me?…

Fernando Cavenaghi is going to be the reason Crespo will never get called up again. I hope this isn’t just a hot streak I hope this is him every game.

i liked the cavenaghi was so composed on his first goal. all the defenders were screaming for offsides. while he was so patient to allow the keeper to go to ground and place the ball in the back of the net. i would like to a cavenaghi, lisandro lopez and higuain rotate the #9 spot.

Boca Juniors received Argentinos Juniors at La Bombonera, earlier this evening.
The Xeneixes played a great level of football (at least for the first three quarters of a game) and beat them 4-0, maybe even deserving a couple more.
“Boca are playing excellent in all their lines” described Radio Mitre’s commentator during the game.

Ibarra, Battaglia, Riquelme and Palermo are all veterans who have won it all under Carlos Bianchi, (and Carlos Ischia, current coach, who was back then Bianchi’s assistant).
Bringing in CB Julio César Cáceres as the boss in the line of 4 defenders has solidified the team. Paletta will learn a great deal playing alongside the paraguayan.
Rodrigo Palacio, Morel Rodriguez, Pablo Ledesma, Neri Cardozo, Gracián, Caranta, Dátolo etc, complete a strong cast that shows quality, depth, copa experience, and “the one” who’s name is chanted by more fans: Riquelme.

Fox Sports carries the best argy game each Sunday. Try to catch Boca playing at home at “La Bombonera”. It’s a great show to watch.
This coming Wednesday they’re playing in Venezuela for C. Libertadores.
I have no idea if the lineup will be the same, but I like the one I saw tonight.
Salutti tuti

Of course, MaxiLopez, Christian, Gonzalo and any other River Plate fan, can kindly decline my invitation. I’ll understand :-)

Unfortunately FSC seems to think River is still among the best teams in Argentina. Last season they carried more River games then Boca even though River was thoroughly pathetic throughout the season. They may do the same this season too.

Alfio, best wishes for you and your family. Have a nice celebration!

I am so happy that Cavenaghi has risen from the dead….he is just the kind of striker that we need. A true poacher. A true number 9. I resally hope with all my heart that this continues. I was so wrong about him when I stated some months ago that he was finished on top level…..Go Cavegol!!

Cavenaghi has always been the same. From Russia to France. Don’t try to understand coaches choices…

8 gols in 6 games is an amazing stat. I think I saw all his games with Bordeaux (my birth city) and said for months (years?) all his worth.

It’s not the time at all for a NT call. Basile should let him confirm all his talent on a long period.

He is destroying everything now in Ligue 1. He evn creates with Micoud because his teamates never move. Don’t consider Bordeaux second place, they are really boring and bad technically (It shows the bad French league level even if i must admit that tactically French teams are pretty good and that’s why it’s very difficult for a player to adapt).

He’s a fox.

1) Cavenaghi 2) Denis 3) Saviola 4) Palacio 98) Higuain 99) Tevez

Maxilopez,

You would put Saviola infont of Tevez?????????? Why would you put him infront of higuain someone who is in front of him in the Real Madrid rotation. Lay off the drugs.

maradona, River and Boca almost always play on Sundays. Since FSC has the rights to broadcast one Primera game that day of the week, it’s inevitable that they’ll show one of those teams. Fair? Probably not, but not going to change anytime soon.

Tevez second leading scorer for Manchester united and leading scorer for last olympics.

Read what people say how about read the facts.
