Copa Libertadores Begins This Week

Copa Libertadores

Two Argentine clubs will begin their quest for glory this week as the first stage of the 2008 Copa Libertadores gets underway, with Arsenal de Sarandí hosting Mineros de Guayana of Venezuela tonight, and Lanús visiting Ecuador Thursday night to face Olmedo. These four along with 8 other clubs will participate in a home and away series to conclude next week that will decide the final spots for the group stages which begin February 12th.

Arsenal will be making their debut in the Copa, and will be hoping that the same luck that saw them surprise winners of the Copa Sudamericana will take them even further here. Likewise, Lanús will look to make a similar statement coming off their own equally surprising Apertura season that saw them win their first ever league title.

All games will be shown live on Fox Sports Español. You can download this week’s schedule from their website.

Comparing Christiano Ronaldo to Messi makes no sense. CR is good so he should be compared to other players who are considered good. But Messi is a virtuoso so he is way above good. However, in terms of popularity among girls and gays, yes, I would rate CR to be the best in the world.

I am sorry but I beg to differ with some of you regarding Ronaldo. While I have no hesitation saying Messi could be one of the best to ever touch football, I would say the say for Ronaldo too. I always chose to find ways to dislike Ronaldo since I first saw him in Man U. I think its time to redeem him.
I honestly think Messi and Ronaldo are the future of soccer.

River-Boca, what a game it was!!!
Try to catch it tomorrow Sunday on Fox Sports.

I have mentioned Alexis Sánchez (River) a couple of times before.
His play in one of the goals was awesome.
He’s a kid from Chile who will be playing in Europe very soon.
Check him out.

Emanuel Villa scored Derby’s equaliser against Birmingham. That’s his first goal for the club since joining them a couple weeks ago. He came on as a sub.

I don’t think Aguero will make this match, he’s just got injured with a serious sprain.

Supposedly Di Maria will be out too, adding him to the list of other unavailable players (Messi, Aguero, Garay, Gago).

As for all of you attending the game, I got some updates regarding the training session on Tuesday:

Ticket buyers who get their tickets in advance can show their ticket to get special admission into practice sessions conducted by both the Guatemalan and Argentinian National Teams.

All attendees MUST have their tickets in hand and can enter the Coliseum via Gate 4 at the Southeast corner of the facility. Gates for the practice will open at 3:30pm. The Guatemalan team will begin their practice at 4pm and the Argentinian team at 7:30pm.

One last mention to River 3-2 Boca.
It was a terrific match, considering they’re all in pre-season.
Congrats to the Gallinas.
Christian, do you know why did Simeone replace Ortega so early in the game?

Ghana 2-1 Nigeria was another great match of the weekend.

The Ortega replacement was a tactical one. Since Ferrari was expelled, Simeone did not want to leave our defense with three players, and therefore moved Villagra to the right side and put in Archubi to take over the left-back role.

Why did he choose to replace Ortega instead of Alexis Sanchez, Ahumada, or Abelairas? I am not sure of the actual reason, but the Chilean was having a great game and deserved to stay in, while Ahumada and Abelairas were heavily contributing the defensive duties. Besides, Ortega deserved some rest.

Maybe Christian has another reason I couldn’t make out?

I haven’t heard of any other reason for the substitution other than what Gonzalo mentioned above, but I would think it had more to do with rest than anything else.

Hey — Did you guys know that el muneco gallardo will now be playing with my team, DC United? How great is that. He has always been a favorite player of mine, so i’m pretty excited that he’s with united.

A question — Did anyone see the barcelona game? how did Messi look yesterday? I read that he was substitued when ronaldinho came in, and I was so surprised by that. How can rikyaard possibly sub Messi?

Messi was good, but again he squandered few chances that he would have scored in the start of the season. I think the only reason that messi was substituted was probably Rikjaard didn’t want to stress him out so soon after he had come back from injury. Also Messi and Henry were running the show on the first half, but Messi dissappeared on the second. He needs to get his goalscoring touch back, or pass it to someone else. Anyways, feeling great that Barca won anyhow.
