Boca v Atlas Tonight

May 14th, 2008 | By: Christian | 138 Comments »

Leave your comments below for tonight’s massive game in Buenos Aires, when Boca will host Mexican club Atlas at Vélez Sarsfield’s Estadio Amalfitani after the Bombonera was suspended from hosting home matches last week. You can watch it live on Fox Sports Español at 6PM ET, or delayed at 10PM.

Riquelme, Palermo, Marioni - IMO this is the draw of the quarterfinals, and neutrals and disgruntled River fans alike should find it an exciting match to follow.

DEBASISH,

There was an eternity before Crespo arrived in the Abramovitch circus.

Crespo has proven his value with River, Parma, Lazio, Milan, Inter.
I’ve watched Crespo & Batistuta (when I lived in Milano), both and many times, at San Siro. Their impact in the games was amazing. They belong to this category of players that can cold the stadium atmosphere when they play as visitors.

You don’t need to check his stats to understand that Crespo is one of the best striker of the 90s. For me, there was: Batistuta, Weah, Ronaldo, Shevchenko, Crespo & maybe Salas.

Roma wants him. I hope he goes there.

(Crespo has also often been in the Batistuta’s shadow because of the medias. For me, in 2002, he was better than Batigol and deserved to start, maybe with him)

Maxi Lopez
I would agree. I missed that piece of information from my blog. I did see him during (not as much) his Parma and Lazio days. He was a dribbler too. I did not see those things much later in his career. And when I say later, he was not that old.

I was talking about those years, why do you think his performance dropped so much? Compared to RVN, or even Julio Cruz has been better than him. Not comparing Julio Cruz with him. But I really thought he will smash it once he gets back to Italy.

Oh - I thought Cavigol was tall. They always compared him to batistuta. Oh well. Another shorty. I just read the Garay has signed with Real Madrid. I f’ing HATE Real Madrid. He might be eaten alive there. But this could also be great for his development. I have to confess that I hope this rumor is false, because Real Madrid is a nasty place to be for many players.

Debasish, Atletico have already signed Heitinga(Dutch Intl), and should also get Ujfalusi(Czech Intl) and from what i’m hearing have nearly signed Lucho from Porto. Now, they are in the process of getting one more goalkeeper, so , they have considerably strengthened the defence and added to the midfield, it remains to be seen who else they sign. Don’t write them off, i expect them to challenge for the title next season.

Cavenaghi is not a shorty lol, he’s 1.81 meters (5 ft 11+1⁄2 in), Crespo is only 4cm taller then him.

Well for me while there have been some dissapointments like barcelona and Messi injuries it has been quite a positive year for the Argies. Just rating there club seasons here is my list.

1. Aguero Led his team to the champions league and is considered by many to be the top forward in La Liga.
2. Tevez Joined a new team and helped led them to a double? either way great club year for tevez.
3. Garay While injured at the end led his team to UEFA cup action and then caught the eye of Real madrid where he will play next year.
4. Cavenaggi Brought himself back into NT consideration with a nie season and great touch in front of goal.
5. Messi Although injuried had enough moments to shine. ALso led his team in asssists which is why I would love to see him behind two other forwards.
6. Mascherano < Best defensive mid in the game?
7. Lucho and Lisandro another championship. Time for them both to move?
8. The Inter boys three in a row with Julio scoring many important goals.
9. Real Madrid While not the focus Higuain makes strides and scores some huge goals. Can you say Poacher?
10. Roman being Roman at Boca.
11. Demichillis Great year and another championship.

The list could go on and on. Many of you keep saying that we need to have players use to winning championships. I would say that this year we have many who fit that description.

Aguero has won the Trofeo EFE award for best IberianAmerican player in La Liga for this season. That’s his third award this season.

Does anyone know how many assists Messi made this season? I know he scored 16 goals in total, but I am very curious how many assists he has…

More rumours and I am not so sure that this is not a better fit for Palacio. I worry that at barcelona he might not get enough playing time.

Sevilla launching bid for Boca Juniors striker Palacio
tribalfootball.com - May 19, 2008

Sevilla are launching a bid for Boca Juniors striker Rodrigo Palacio.
Despite claims that Barca have struck terms with Boca for the Argentina international, it’s emerged Sevilla have also made contact about a deal for the prolific forward.

Sevilla plan to fund their bid for Palacio with the sales of Daniel Alves and Seydou Keita, who are both big-money targets for Barca

for what it’s worth — Milan is not allowing Kaka to play in the Olympics. Read it on soccernet.

In my eyes.

Lisandro Lopez is a better poacher then Cavenanghi. Lopez is a threat in the air while Cavenanghi. I hope he quits Porto and goes to one of the top three countries, (England, Spain, or Italy) He is good enough to play anywhere, he is a true poacher and is a threat in the air as well (Scored against Liverpool with his head)

MaxiLopez, you say Cavenaghi belongs to the outstanding strikers.
I like is game.
But I haven’t seen him play against any important defense.
What has he won?]
I remember when he was in River, he was a wonderful promise.
I think he still is.
And I know everybody here loves him.
But honestly, Cavenaghi hasn’t done anything important yet.
So let’s call him outstanding once he stands out and not earlier than that.

I agree with Albo

Lopez actually has proven his worth but not on the national team because he never had a real chance.

I love Cavenaghi. He was brilliant at River Plate and probably our last true number 9.

Anyone heard anything about Luciano Figueroa lately? Is his career with the national team effectively over? He was fantastic in the 2006 Copa America with our boys. I know he had two knee surgeries and has already appeared for his club side, Genoa, but was wondering if anyone was following his progress.

Alfio Basile for Radio “La Red” (Buenos Aires). Amateur translation.

“I just select the players, I haven’t had much of a chance to coach them.
There’s simply been no time for that.
That’s why Messi has been playing in the same position he plays at Barcelona, for example.”

“This time though, between the 4 upcoming matches, we’ll have 18 days together
So I’ll give Messi more freedom to move around and change positions at will”.

He also mentioned he is thinking about making some tactical changes for their match against Brazil.
“Last Copa America, they played us and beat us with a conservative 4-4-2″ he said.
We’re going to make some changes too.

When asked about:

Agüero: He’s having a great year. And he gives me options because he can play the 10 and 8 position (attacking midfielder).

Germán Denis: He’s the kind of striker Batistuta was. Very explosive.

Abbondanzieri: He doesn’t own the starting GK position, but he’s still my goalkeeper and I’ll support him. Later we’ll see how his results look.

Forwards, an “all-dorf” formation or a real #9 striker?: It’s amazing the amount of great forwards we have. Some people wanna see a #9. So who do I sit? Messi? Agüero? Tevez?…

Both of them got the call from el Mister.

The list above only includes our “European” players.
It is the list Basile had to send to AFA for confirmation by their respective clubs.
The deadline for confirmation is May 30th.
Then, some “Argy” league players will be added.

Akk, you’re right about that.
But Clarín today explained that if a club doesn’t confirm their permission by May 30th, Basile might still call argy league players.

Him and Batista don’t want to interfere with argy clubs at this point.
That’s why the only argy league player Batista called up for Catalunya was Valeri, because Lanús is not currently fighting for any title.

Looks like we’ll be able to field a #9 since Tevez will not be part of the first two matches in June.
