Argentina Stumbles Again in Copa Libertadores

April 30th, 2008 | By: Christian | 122 Comments »

It’s not going well for Argentina in the Copa this year. Both Lanús and Estudiantes lost yesterday in the first round of 16 matches, and as in the group stage, there are serious questions about the odds of one of the 5 remaining teams making it deep into the competition.

While Estudiantes will most certainly blame the high altitude in Quito, they still have a huge mountain to climb when the second leg is played in La Plata on May 7th. Lanús meanwhile looked unimpressive, losing for the first time in the tournament, and conceeding an all important away goal to Atlas.

With at least one team being eliminated from the River Plate - San Lorenzo draw, and Boca facing a tricky tie against Cruzeiro, it’ll be tough for a team from Argentina to advance to the final.

I think Zarate & Lavezzi have the ability to match Saviola particularly Zarate.

As for the role of Riquelme that dead ball ability from corners & free kicks is essential in the modern game. However players must come from behind him as late runners in & around the box ie the 8 that Albo talks about & there must be constant movement infront of him to suit that game whilst the full backs must come forward to give width & stretch the opposition.

Particularly we cannot keep playing infront of teams. Its too easy to defend. We still have a problem getting the attacker to the byeline & turning the opposition defence.

When we do we are lethal. If we are to accomodate Riquelme we need either a comparable attacking midfielder who is prepared to defensive work when required or vice versa whilst one DM must sit all the time to cover the runs of the full backs foward.

Great goal by Carlitos against his former club!!
And one has to say; when C Ronaldo even scores with his penis(!)…it is clear that this is his season.

Ronaldo pisses me off.. there was a great 1-2 with Tevez and Ronaldo should have passed it back in the box to Tevez or Park on the far side for a clear cut chance but yet decides to take the last man on and eventually loses the ball. As good as he is, and I understand great players must be selfish to a degree, but it kills me when the build up is so good and all that’s required is making the proper pass instead of trying to go solo for glory. That’s why Rooney and Tevez have been great as they’ve had numerous 1-2s with passes back as they both have been unselfish (and both like each other as opposed to Tevez and Ronaldo where there is clearly some friction)….

sorry, just wanted to rant on that point. other than that, I agree with you Rune, what a screamer by Tevez. similar to the goal he scored vs Chelsea last year as a Hammer, except this time, got much more power in his shot.

Tevez with an all around good name.. too bad Sir Alex will probably start Rooney over him. If rooney wasn’t English, there is no way you could justify the move… and whatever happened to Anderson? I thought he was one of Man U’s better players this season but he hasn’t got a sniff these past few games.

Great goal by Tevez. Regardless of how Man U played if the Barca players had been on form they would have beaten Man U. It’s not like they couldn’t breakthrough United’s defence they just simply forgot how to finish. Earlier on in the season, if this same team had played before Messi got injured the first time they would have torn United apart, they were lethal in front of goal, but at this present time some of the players are just not mentally alert.

I mean they’ve lost the hunger, with the exception of Messi.

Nani is fast joining the ranks of the most annoying players in the world. He is a disgrace really. His team mate and fellow Portugese C Ronaldo already heads that list.

I hope Boca-River takes place totally free of violence.
It is such a great event to watch.
May all fans (and players) keep their cool, win or lose.
Peace and good football.

I know someone says this was Aguero’s 18th legue goal of the season…but the spanish TV company that produce tha La Liga games showed that it was his 17th…so I guess they’re right.

AKK,
I think Abramovitch is spending the billions he has stolen to Russia, where people are dying because of famine, in order to realize his dream to win the Champions league with Chelsea, a team built like in a videogame.
Abramovitch belongs to the category of men who is killing this sport for many reasons (with the illegal help of MSI). Pray futbol gods Messi doesn’t go there.

I wonder what kind of future has Messi at Barca. This club has the 4-3-3 culture where Messi will always be a right winger. Messi is more than this.

PEOPLE,
In Basile’s 4-3-1-2, Riquelme & Messi are obviously starters. What do you think about the fact that there is ONLY one SINGLE spot between Tevez, Aguero, Palacio, Cavenaghi, Lisandro? It could also mean that only 3 of them would go the WC.

Yes, I know ALBO. You didn’t answer my question :) I would hate to see Palacio, Aguero or Cavenaghi on the bench, preparing the oranges for Tevez.

Crespo looks finished, harsh but true. Cruz is a class forward but gets butterflies everytime he plays for the NT. Tevez plays in Messi’s position (hence no Tevez, even if he might be the best choice to start against teams like Italy and Germany because of his workrate). Denis and Palacio haven’t converted the small chances they’ve gotten, neither has Milito.
Looks like it’s going to be between Cavenaghi, Lopez and Agüero for the number 9. I’d prefer Cavenaghi: great workrate and link up play and is a presence in the box.

Maxi…
Ayala was brilliant yesterday. His goal celebration said it all…he was on his knees after the match, but another image flashed in my mind-his helpless body on that ground during the copa america final, after his self goal. Sad for such a great player that the chain of events to the end of his career are not befitting a player of his class.

Zaragoza looked like a rejuvenated team…Milio worked his socks out and again that injury seemed to be troubling him…Aimar still looks a bit uncertain, but there was few moments of genious one touch intricate movements he orchestrated. But most of the time he was looking for balls in vein. Sergio García was their best player..he like milito worked very hard and was brilliant. Olivera was a total waste!
