International Friendly – Scotland v Argentina LIVE

November 19th, 2008 | By: Christian | 160 Comments »

The Diego Maradona era is set to begin this evening, as el Diez will make his coaching debut for Argentina in an international friendly against Scotland. The match will be live in the U.S. at 2:30PM ET/11:30AM PT 3PM ET/Noon PT on ESPN Deportes and on various streaming channels.

With Maradona-fever running rampant in Glasgow, all eyes will be focused on Hampden Park tonight. What began as an otherwise meaningless friendly has become a worldwide event that will have fans and critics looking not only to see how Diego manages in his debut, but more importantly, to see if he can raise the level of play and confidence of the squad ahead of the next round of World Cup Qualifying.

I’ll post updates throughout the day; as always, please leave your comments, as well as any streaming links, below. Good luck to Diego and Argentina, and good luck to all.

UPDATED: Starting Lineup
Carrizo
Zanetti, Demichelis, Heinze, Papa
Mascherano, Gago, Maxi Rodríguez, Jonás Gutiérrez
Lavezzi, Tevez.

Tevez’ contract is up and expensive, and MU don’t want to keep him at that price.

Remember that United have the right of first refusal for Giuseppe Rossi who’s tearing it up at Villareal right now, so it’s not like United are going to be lacking in strikers in the near future. So Tevez would do well to start packing his bags. I would love for him to stay in the EPL because he’s proven he can be successful there, but I doubt United would want to do that. He would perfect at Chelsea or Man City.

Guys I have said it before. Man Utd is doing this deliberately with Tevez. If he has a wonderful season, then there will be plenty of clubs who will be ready to pay the price – Chelsea, Inter, Real, Man City etc.

However, if he has a bad year then not too many clubs will come up for him. Then Man Utd. can get into negotiations with MLS and keep Tevez for a low price.

Regardless, Tevez needs to play, a move to Spain would be good, i hate Real Madrid, but at least he will get to play. Saviola needs to find himself a club where he actually gets to play rather than warm a bench, and the sooner he does it the better.

day1star I agree. I will happy to see Tevez in Spain too.

I do not care about Saviola anymore. I thought he was a clever player, but he surely is not that clever outside the pitch.

Saviola looked pathetic in every sense yesterday. We have truck load of talents for his position in NT. So let him do whatever he wants to do with his career.

I think we are all agreed on tevez and the sad part is that he had a great season last year and man u were much better but like all managers Fergie had to tinker with success.

I care but in a manly way lol I think that Saviola would be great somewhere like Villareal or Sevilla he did well when he was there .

Yes I care, too. But it is his problem: I will scream if he doesn’t move in January! He would be perfect for so many clubs (he was great at Barcelona whenever a coach finally put faith in him, whatever Barca fans say now). It’s always tempting to think of Saviola as this young player but realistically he is nearly 27: 2010 is his last shot at a World Cup and he has so much top opposition for his position. He needs to get to a club asap and play.

Its nice of you if you guys care about Saviola. But if the guy himself is not bothered then what the heck. He could have had a great career. Saviola chose money over anything else. There were 14 clubs interested in him at one point. He chose Real Madrid. Its only for money.

I will be very happy if he wakes up. But there have been so many players who have come up at the NT level.

DEBASISH,
Almost all players do this for money. It is even a big problem for our very young generations in Argentina that prefer to go at 18 in Russia or Qatar for petrodollars instead of finishing their training in futbol schools. I care about Saviola because of his futbol. In 2006, he was a sort of Maxi Rodriguez turning around Crespo & Roman :) I absolutely understand what you feel tough. I don’t think it’s only about money concerning Saviola. There is ambition too. He wants to prove that he is more than a Monaco or Sevilla player if you know what I mean. His objective is to succeed in one of the 2 giants in Spain. But sometimes coaches will always be a barrier, on his way. He must move. Napoli, Lazio, Villareal would consider him as a hero. This is worth to sacrifice a bit of el conejito salary. Better to be a hero than warm a bench with stars. WC is coming, this winter, he’ll be loaned another time.

Maxi Rodriguez +1. Using him as a fullback in the NT would mean forgetting his amazing fox skills. How did he score?

Messi has been subbed. He created the first goal for Henry and scored the third. This is shrewd by Guardiola. And Messi gets his rest.

I said it many times AJ, it’s because of 4-5-1. Blanc prefers a strong #9 upfront.

Agüero, Lavezzi, Tevez, Saviola, Palacio, Zárate, Buonanotte and I don’t know how many more I’m forgetting, each of these floating forwards can score at any given time, and it’s aweful hard to decide who to play in that position.
Heck, Boca played two #9s last Sunday because it’s all they had available.
They won and each of them scored. Go figure…

Maxi, I swear I didn’t forget Messi. :-)
It’s just that Messi is a lot more than a floating forward to me.
Mascherano and Messi are non-negotiable in my book. Even in a not so good day.
Just healthy.

Messi is out of this world good. 3 to 0 when he left the pitch with total domination. After he leaves the other teams scores to quick ones and the game gets way to close for comfort. Messi is a difference maker. The other teams play differently when he is out there. They play with fear and lack of confidence because they know they will need two or three of their players to stop him . What a player he has become. Oh how I hope Maradona builds our NT around him and only him. If we just play the other ten players that most compliment him we will win the next world cup. Players that are great at the one two and players that will run off the ball to space created by messi.
