Primera Results - Week 5

March 11th, 2008 | By: Christian | 89 Comments »

It was a lucky weekend for current leaders Vélez Sarsfield, who were gifted a non-existent penalty in their 1-0 win over Newell’s. But more importantly for them, Boca - Independiente and Estudiantes - River both ended in draws. Of those two match-ups, Independiente clearly had the most disappointing result, failing to win at la Bombonera despite having a 1 man advantage.

Lanús meanwhile suffered a humiliating defeat at home against Banfield. An interesting statistic - since the beginning of the Apertura/Clausura era, no team outside of Boca, River, or Vélez has gone on to win back to back titles. While there is still time for Lanús to make a run for the Clausura, they clearly have history working against them.

Friday
Racing 0 - 1 San Lorenzo
Rosario Central 0 - 0 Colón

Saturday
Lanús 0 - 5 Banfield

Basile, on the presence of our “B” forwards for the upcoming match in Egypt:

“Well, Messi is injured, Tevez is a bit over-played, Crespo has not been playing much. Agüero will be with us.
I’m not calling up the “locals” at this time, Denis, Sand, Montenegro, Palermo, Palacio, Balvorín, etc.

On the other hand, Cavenaghi has 16 goals for Bordeaux, Cruz has 15 for Inter, Lisandro López has 21 for Porto, Lavezzi, 8 for Napoli.
Stats show that actually our “B” forwards have better numbers than Messi, Tevez, Agüero and Crespo.”

“I watch a ton of video every week”, he continues.
“It’s ridiculous, the amount of elite forwards we have at the moment, it’s almost endless.
Torito Cavenaghi, Licha Lopez, Cruz and Lavezzi deserve this chance.
It’s up to them to make good use of it.
We have to find the combination of players who click as a team.
What worries me now is who will replace Román.
Egypt is going to be a very tough test match for us and we need a player to take control of our team and dictate the flow of our game.

James, the sides of the diamond have to also play good defence.
Valeri is a lot like Riquelme, in fact, they look alike on the pitch.
I can see Maxi and Gago on the diamond’s sides and Valeri as a sub for Riquelme.

Have a good holidays, Rune.
CL draw has been made: Arsenal v Liverpool winner of this match will play
Fenerbahce v Chelsea in the semi final.
Scalke v Barcelona winner of this match will play
AS Roma v Man Utd in the semi final.
Not bad draw for Barca, hopefully they should reach the semi’s and then Messi will be available to play. Barca v Utd, Messi v Ronaldo, what a game it could be, what do you guys and gals think?

Chelsea is really getting the luck of the draw this year. Olympiakos and now Fenerbahce. Happy for Barca. But would have preferred a Barca vs Man U final rather than a semi final.

But really relieved about Schalke. They can beat Barca though, not to be underestimated, but a real chance. I want a argie player in each team of the final, thats all.

DAY1STAR,
I believe the final will be Arsenal VS Roma. I think Arsenal are gonna win the cup, they are young & experienced monsters.

Thank you ALBO for the words from Basile.

Maxi and Lucho are the best people we have to play on the sides of the diamond.

Lucho and Maxi can attack AND defend. I don’t know why some of you are talking about Valeri, Gago or Cambiasso taking this role because they are out of position if you want to build correctly from the sides and defend well. I don’t understand why Basile never tried to test a 4-5-1 system where central midfield is reinforced in order to balance the attacks of our wingers (which are the domains where we have plenty of talent!).

Bruna pens Liverpool pro deal
tribalfootball.com - March 14, 2008

Gerardo Bruna has signed a two-year pro deal with Liverpool.

Argentine Bruna, who came from Real Madrid’s youth Academy, is an attacking left sided midfield player who has been a regular member of Gary Ablett’s reserve team squad this season.

“Gerardo has a lot of talent and he is one for the future,” Ablett told Liverpoolfc.tv.

tribalfootball.com - March 14, 2008

Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti has hailed the influence of Argentina teammate Javier Mascherano on Liverpool’s midfield.

He said: “Are Liverpool a two-man team? No way.

“Mascherano is world class. I embraced him at the end of Tuesday - he was a lion.”

Gregory Sica gives it up for River, which in his words, the “time is now for superclub to reclaim its rightful place.”

While I certainly hope that’s true, I don’t know if I can say that after the schizophrenic start they’ve had this season.

It was reported that Bielsa tried to get in the stadium to watch Universidad Catolica-River Plate in Santiago de Chile.
He was stopped by a door-man for not having his ticket.
He said: “I gave it to a kid who couldn’t afford it”.
After authorities from Catolica learned about this they offered him a VIP box, but El Loco declined it and went home.
“I can watch Alexis on TV” he said… :-)

with so many forwards called up and so few midfielders i would like to see a 4-3-3 line up. since this is a friendly we can expierement a bit, lavezzo can play as a winger and with a doulble five in place i thunk we will be fine. also since there is no playmaker we do need an extra attacker.

Demichelis Suspended By Hitzfeld
Bayern Munich defender Martin Demichelis has been suspended by trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld for refusing to play in midfield rather than defense.

It is understood that the Bayern trainer asked the Argentinian to play in a defensive midfield role for the weekend game against Energie Cottbus. After Demichelis refused, Hitzfeld promptly suspended him from the squad ‘until further notice’.

“I was left with no other choice but to leave Martin out of the Cottbus squad and suspend him until further notice from training” explained the Bayern boss.

“A player cannot dictate which position he plays in. We are not a request show” the General added. A monetary punishment is not expected to be levied on the player.

“It is not a problem for Bayern Munich, it is a problem between Martin Demichelis and me” Hitzfeld added.

Following the suspension, Demichelis stormed into the press room at the Sabener Strasse to put across his point of view.

“My heart beats for Bayern Munich and I feel like a son of the club. I would like to apologise to my fans for this action and I do not wish to criticise Ottmar Hitzfeld” he said.

“But I am a first-choice with the Argentine national team and I want to play in my preferred position here.”

This is not the first time this season trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld has acted firmly with his players. Captain Oliver Kahn was internally suspended earlier this season and fined 25,000 euros for leaving the club’s Christmas party early and for criticising Franck Ribery and Luca Toni.

Bayern Munich will also be without the suspended Mark van Bommel for their trip to Cottbus on Saturday. Apart from the two afore mentioned players, Bayern have few selection concerns ahead of the weekend.

Zé Roberto is expected to return to the starting XI, while Lucio and Miroslav Klose are both expected to have recovered from slight knocks.

This would suck because he is suspended indefinitely. I really wanted the pairing of Demichelis and Garay in the heart of our defense.

Imagine the nerve of a manager to try and manage his team! It’s to silly and Demichelis has backed himself into a corner.

Hitzfeld should be lauded for his handling of all his players. Old school kick butt (alla Fabio Capello) management system.

regards,

Velez fans rioted this afternoon at San Lorenzo after it came out that a fan had been killed on route to the stadium, although this has not been confirmed. Velez fans attempted to storm the pitch at el Nuevo Gasometro to stop the match, and after a brief struggle with police, who responded with warning shots and water hoses, the ref called off the match, A sad end for what should have been a great game. Here’s hoping that fan is ok.

Ugh, that’s horrible. I hope he’s ok…

Collocini played a great defensive game against Real Madrid today, haven’t seen him play that good in a long time. Heinze was horrible, Higuain didn’t play long enough to make an impact and Gago stayed the entire game on the bench.

Bad news. The Vice-President of Velez confirmed that a 21 year old was killed on route to the stadium. 40 buses carrying Velez fans were attacked as they passed a group of Huracan fans.

It’s worth noting that further violence was avoided when Velez fans, who cleared out of the Nuevo Gasometro, attempted to enact some kind of revenge, but were stopped by police.

A horrific day in Argentina. Stay tuned for more.

That is really sad news.
I bet Hitzfeld is feeling a bit stupid right now, considering Bayern lost to Cottbus 2-0.
Plus great game from Roma, beat a mediocre Milan 2-1.
