Primera Results - Week 3

February 26th, 2008 | By: Christian | 24 Comments »

Sorry for not having posted this earlier, but I just came back from a weekend in San Diego. By the way, if anyone here can recommend a good bar/pub to catch some footy out there, please let me know.

As for the results from over the weekend, Estudiantes and Lanús had huge victories over Newell’s and Colón respectively, with both teams scoring 5 goals at home. Add to that, both met today in Group 2 of the Copa Libertadores, but unfortunately played to a 0-0 draw.

Tied with Estudiantes for 1st overall, Vélez continue to keep pace, with both sides even now on points and goal differential. And San Lorenzo, despite the return of Andrés D’Alessandro, were unable to earn their first point of the season after a 2-0 loss to River at the Monumental, and will now have to climb out of the bottom of the table.

Some stats on Messi.
This coming weekend Lio Messi will play his match # 100 for Barcelona. He’s 20 years old.
His debut took place during the 2004-05 season, under Frank Rijkaard against Espanyol in Montjuîc. At the time, he was 17.
Wearing numbers 30 and 19 (currently), Lio has played 71 matches in La Liga, 18 in CL, 7 in Copa del Rey, 2 in Supercopa de España y 1 in Supercopa de Europa.
He was a starter 76 times, and 19 he subbed-in.
With Messi on the pitch, Barça won 67 of the 99 matches they played.
He has scored 40 goals, 30 in La Liga, 7 in CL and 3 in Copa.

On a different topic, Atlético de Madrid, after reviewing the play and studying the situation, decided not to appeal the 2 UEFA matches suspension against Sergio Kun Agüero for spitting at a Bolton player.
Source: “La Nación” (Argentina) and “Marca” (España).

It was Javier Zanetti’s turn, this time, to raise to the occasion.
His rocket from outside the box, at the end of the game, gave Inter Milano the draw (1-1) they needed to keep the 9 point distance from the Romanos.
Inter are still unbeaten this season after 25 matches in Calcio!!!
But that’s not all.
In those 25 matches they scored 50 times.
Inter average 2 goals per game. Guarantied.
Now that’s awesome, isn’t it?

I still think Inter is missing a good attacking mid-fielder though. An amf would be the missing link between draws and 3 goals per game (considering the quality of the team).

Just finished watching the River-America game. Shocking. I’m glad we won, but River should be embarrassed. That should have been far easier than we made it. Props to the America keeper, but River should have put the game away with ease.

i totally agree about the inter comments above, they do need an amf. they play 2 defensive mf which i don’t like at all. they never found a replacement for veron and then for some strange reason they sold pizzaro. if you look throughout the inter’ mf they are mostly defensive mf. their supposed play maker stankovic is playing well below par this season. and then during the january transfer window they sign maniche another defensive mf. i would like to see either perrotta or aqualani go to inter.

Hi Guys,

Just trying to catching up on some of the discussion, I’ve been extremely busy.

ROMA v inter……….Who thought that Mexes yellow card was justifiable? Exactly my point …no-one does. How many more controversial wins / ties are we as football fans willing to endure? Again I encourage all my fellow bloggers to write the FIGC demanding a min. 12 point deduction from inter.

Thanking you in advance for your continued support. As always I will have my Italian soccer report posted by Sunday evening.

regards
