Primera Results - Week 1

February 11th, 2008 | By: Christian | 21 Comments »

The 2008 Clausura kicked off this weekend in Argentina, and while there are still 18 more fixtures to go through before a champion is decided, some of the results from the past few days may have an impact on some teams come June.

The biggest surprises had to come from the Big 5, with San Lorenzo, Independiente, Boca, and Racing all dropping points, and though River Plate won 2-0 at home, they were far from convincing. Elsewhere, Lanús and Arsenal, last years surprise champs, both come out of the gate with wins, as did last seasons Apertura runners up Tigre. Finally, keep an eye on Vélez, a team that may just have something to say about who wins it all.

Complete Results:

San Lorenzo 0 - 2 Newell`s
Estudiantes 2 - 1 Banfield

San Martín (SJ) 2 - 0 Argentinos
Tigre 2 - 1 Gimnasia
Vélez 4 - 3 Colón
Racing 1 - 1 Olimpo

Lanús 1 - 0 Independiente
Rosario Central 1 - 1 Boca
Arsenal 2 - 0 Huracán
River 2 - 0 Gimnasia (J)

Hi all,

Cavenaghi has scored 6 goals in 5 games and that’s it, the ones who were spitting on him few months ago want him to be our NT #9 starter and leave Bordeaux for Barca.

Now that Cavegol is appearing to be the best replacement to Crespo, regarding to some others, Crespo must be thrown to the bin.

Crespo is trying to recover from his tuff season last year. I remind that Crespo, in 2007, has played almost all the Calcio games, the Champions and the Copa last june. I also remind some that Crespo is human and not a robot. Read what Ronaldinho, Arsene Wenger or Henry think about the games high frequency.

Cavenaghi scores gols. He plays every week and is brilliant like he has always been (even in Russia). He speaks French perfectly and is getting more and more important in the squad (he shoots penalties!). He has just earned a starting role in the French squad but it’s not the right moment to be part of the NT yet.

But he obviously represents the future of the #9 spot, instead of Tevez (who is not a striker at all, I see him more as a Messi sub).

We have Cavenaghi and Denis, it’s perfect for the striking role.

The only problem that Basile needs to fix is the best way to use our best players. Cambiasso scores each Sunday and is excellent with Inter. This doesn’t mean he needs to be used as a left winger in the NT because there is already a starting #5. If Gago, Mascherano & Cambiasso are center midfielders, then they must be used regarding their qualities, like in 2006 (defending 4-3-1-2 or 4-1-4-1 switching into a 3-4-1-2 system. This means that when Argentina had the ball, Cambiasso was always in the center with Masche). An attacking AND defending 4-3-1-2 system is only compatible with Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez, not with Cambiasso or Gago on the left. This is the only tactical problem that will last until 2010. It is the only problem Argentina need to fix (with Pato, obviously…). This is why we lost against Brazil (the incorrect use of Veron & ChuChu).

European teams are preparing the next WC. While we are thinking about how to attack, and forgetting our obvious tactical problems (and why we often lose against counter-attacking teams), Europeans are preparing WC 2010. Unlike us, using our players like batteries, even for U23 friendlies. Some Russians must be happy if you know what I mean.

AURELIUS,
Business has already killed futbol. English spirit is disappearing day by day in their football. English players don’t even space to play in their league. I think that in Argentina it’s even worst. Grondona is AFA president since 20 years. What did he bring to Argentine futbol? What titles did we win with amazing futbol generations? It’s time to throw him from a bridge…

ALBO,
If you have some Placente news and some time, thanks for posting them here. I always read your posts. I think San Lorenzo will be very dangerous this year. Their players need to adapt eachother before.

PS: I wanna thank Messay for the last friendly feedback.

Yeah ajNYHC, I watched the whole game on TV and Riquelme couldn’t do much because he had 2 or 3 defenders on him all the time.
The great thing about great players though, is that they need just one opportunity when the opponent gets careless and that’s it.
Pretty much what happened.
Btw, if you’re into it, find Rosario Central’s goal by Kily Gonzalez.
A 25 meter bomb that left Caranta chasing butterflies. :-)

Cavenaghi doesn’t impress me yet. Remember last year when saviola was on a goal streak. Now what has happen to him? Having a double 9 or a “twin tower” attack won’t work for Argentina. Argentina needs only one hit man and then a supporting striker. Right now Argentinas’ attack line is Crespo being the hit man while Tevez is the supporting striker.

Maxi Lopez

Tevez isn’t a right winger as Messi is. Don’t you remember he played as a winger for West Ham and he did horrible.

what do u think about this declaration from schuster?

“Gago needs to learn to play alongside another central player, something that as a young Argentine he is unused to”.

Barcelona already have struck fee for Garay
tribalfooball.com - February 11, 2008

Barcelona are set to complete the signing of Racing Santander defender Ezequiel Garay this week.

The Argentine’s agent, Fabian Basualdo, is jetting to Spain for talks with Barcelona and Racing officials, says DiarioSport, with the view to striking an agreement this week.

Racing have already verbally agreed a £9 million fee with Barca for Garay and Basualdo will settle personal terms with Nou Camp officials in the coming days.

Garay will move to Barca as a direct replacement for Lilian Thuram, who is expected to return to French football in the summer.

>>>what do u think about the declaration from schuster?>>>

J-Argie, I think it’s totally true.
Basile told Gago the same thing, back in Boca Juniors.
We have a bunch of good # 5 players.
Mascherano, Gago, Cambiasso, Banega, etc.
Problem is they haven’t learned to share the midfield and play in sync.
Same happened back at WC06 under Pekerman.
It seems “double 5″ is not easy to achieve.

Great result for Estudiantes!

Sorry Guys I have to respond to a couple of off topic items.

Firstly to Albo.

Your ability to use vulgar language and the general classlessness of your posts to anyone you disagree sadden me. It reminds of that feeling I had after the world cup game between Germany and ARGENTINA. To see my team behave in such a manner after the pk’s …….well I was ashamed.

Secondly Sal and Debasish.

You don’t like my posts and that’s fair. I’ll try and get a good sleep tonight even though your negative opinions of me weigh heavily on my mind. However I will continue to post and will take your constructive criticisms’ and try and improve my writing. If you are wasting your “precious time” reading my post may I suggest you skip over them.

Take care guy’s and forza Estudiantes!!

Regards,

MaxiLopez, I’ll try to find you some more info on Diego Placente.
He’s happy to be back in the argy league.

River Plate is in serious economic situation
San Lorenzo on the other hand, got a super investor, his name is Tinelli, he is a producer and host of a high rating TV talk show in Buenos Aires.
River wanted Ramón Díaz back as a coach (Díaz had already gotten 5 league titles plus a Copa Libertadores and a Re-Copa with River), but couldn’t afford him.
Tinelli hired Ramón Díaz for San Lorenzo, and since then, there’s a war between Aguilar (River president) and Ramón Díaz.
As a consequence, some of the River former players that were coming back home from Europe were hired by Ramón Díaz “stealing” them from El Millo (i.e. Diego Placente and Andrés D’Alessandro).
I imagine sooner or later they’ll end up playing for River. But River have to clean up their act and show they can make some money.
Diego Placente is happy now because Ramón has spoken very highly of him to the press and mentioned that he’s going to “prepare Placente for Basile’s NT”.
Serious, that’s literally what he said. :-)

Gonzalo, I don’t understand.
If I’m incorrect why don’t you explain?
I got my info from Olé/Clarín, included what Aguilar said to El Pelado.
If that’s not good info I’d like to know the true.
Why wouldn’t you “get started on that”?

john/ken,

I know it is you. I fell bad you, your such a loser get some friends. Stop doing this every time someone disagrees with you, you little bitch.

Your not Argentine so don’t ever say Argentina is your team. It is disrespectful to the real Argentines here. Like like saying your black and you have been there with them in all the hardships, so all due respect never in your life say Argentina is your team.

could anyone please explain to me why my rosario central is not being backed up by any individuals wanting to actually see them win a clausura?it seems that every game we play we’re missing one person to complete a championship team, it’s annoying because we have the fans, we pack the stadiums and the team always gives it their all but we’re missing one or two players to put the puzzle together. don’t get me wrong i enjoy watching all the rest of the teams as well(boca, river, estud, etc)but for once i’d like to see someone say or step in and put some real money in and identify central as being a potential for the best in the world.
