Clausura 2008 Kicks Off This Weekend

Argentina Blog

The wait is over.

After a long break, summer friendlies, and active dealings in the transfer market, La Primera is set to return this Friday night when San Lorenzo hosts Newell’s Old Boys to kick off the 2008 Clausura.

What can we expect over the next 19 fixtures? For starters, this could turn out to be an extremely competitive season. Last year it was the “smaller” clubs that grabbed all the headlines, with Lanús and Arsenal both winning their first ever silverware, grabbing the Apertura and Copa Sudamericana titles respectively. However, looking at last season’s table reveals some other surprises as well. Tigre, newly promoted from years in the second division, came within 2 points of capturing the title themselves, and Banfield, Argentinos, and Huracán all finished within the top ten.

Don’t count out the traditional Big 5 just yet. Both River Plate and Boca Juniors come into this campaign with new head coaches, and though Boca had the stronger off-season with the additions of Juan Román Riquelme, Julio Cáceres, and Lucas Castromán, River Plate recently won the Copa de Verano. Argentina’s second most heated rivalry will resume between Independiente and Racing, both of whom are coming off disappointing seasons; los rojos were a lock to win the title before fading at the stretch, while Racing meanwhile were average on the pitch. San Lorenzo, who began 2007 with their own Clausura title, were not much of a threat last year, but the recent signing of Andrés D’Alessandro could change their fortunes.

Five Primera teams will also have to make room for the Copa Libertadores. As usual Fox Soccer Channel will air one “big” match on Sundays, while the rest can be seen on TyC Sports if you have DirecTV. Check back here every weekend as I’ll recap all the games.

Fixture list for February 8th-10th:

Friday

San Lorenzo - Newell`s
Estudiantes - Banfield

Saturday
San Martín (SJ) - Argentinos
Tigre - Gimnasia
Vélez - Colón
Racing - Olimpo

Sunday
Lanús - Independiente
Rosario Central - Boca
Arsenal - Huracán
River - Gimnasia (J)

Bruna is a star in the making. :)

Meanwhile the football circus run by moneymen in England is set to take off witht a proposed idea to have extra league matches played abroad in Miami , Melbourne ,Shanghai,Mumbai even Buenos Aires.

Utter madness & another kick in the teeth for football fans here. Chairman expect fans here to spend more money on flying abroad to support the teams.

Moneymen are killing football at least here.

Anyway tell me those who watched the friendly v Guatemala how did Escudero get on.

He is a very forward left sided midfielder so how did he get on at left back ? Did he look awkward or not ? Range of passing ? Tackling & closing the opposition winger & tracking his runs ? Interesting idea to convert two natural midfielders into full backs with Zabaleta on the opposite wing.

Manchester United are tracking Patricio Gonsalez of Independiente with a view to making a bid over the summer. Barca are also very interested.
Chau amigos.

Escudero played really well. Might even been the best player on the field. His tackles we’re really good. He played like Zanetti always going up for the passes. He canceled out Jose Sosa, many times it would be Escudero and higuain hooking up. He probably played the best out of everyone, deff the man of the match.

Aurelius, nice to see you around !!
Escudero had a great night, like Golazo says, though it’s also true that his territory wasn’t threatened at all. But he really played his heart out.
One of the best in my opinion (along with Mascherano, Demichelis and Higuaín).
And he could also play at Sosa’s possition, an option I believe is been considered.
But the left fullback position has been up for grabs in the major team for a long time now (since Sorín). So I would say that Escudero’s game was good news for both, Checho Batista and Coco Basile.
btw, you mention him and Zabaleta as midfielders converted to full backs.
Demichelis is a midfielder converted to CD.
And I believe Zanetti was a midfielder who moved to the right full back possition.
Sorín and Placente, can play both too on the left side. :-)
Saludos

I’ll post me Serie A Report sometime Sunday evening.

AC MILAN v siena……I predict a great deal of pain being inflicted on siena.

Also I’ll keep you posted on the investigation into inter and the shamefull ways they won a few games with obvious bad calls resulting in PK’s

Albo i read your post and thought it was just

Good to hear that gentlemen. :) Emiliano Insua has still a long way to go at present.

Batista I guess will persist with this against tougher opposition in the run up to the Olympics.

The Olympics are on a par equal to the continental championships .Once a joke they are being taken more & more seriously by all nations.

Demichelis ,Masche & Riquelme as the three over age players look perfect. Games are won by the midfield & there is plenty of talent to cover all the other positions.

Uruguay have some decent youngsters now playing in Europe Gargano & Cavani for instance & Chile seem to have unearthed a rich vein of talent. Should make for an extremely exciting Copa in 2011.

Spain & Ghana will be very dangerous too along with Brazil. Pity about the atmospheric conditions in Beijing. Not conducive to good health.

Btw Albo should be very comfortable for the tennis in the Davis Cup being 2-0 up already.

also here are the words of Maradona.

‘I would really like that (coaching),’ Maradona told Radio Del Plata.

‘I am very happy for Batista being in the Under-23 side, but that squad was for me. I would have loved coaching in the Olympic Games.’

there is no doubt fernando gago is one the best def. mid. in the world…he is still young, he doesn’t always do the right thing but he is way more creative, versatile than diarra.

ahhh great news golazo. cavigol is making some noise. I really wish he would go to a spanish team, or if somehow bordoex wins the league, he could get some major recognition.

Yes Messay, Cavenaghi said today, in an interview to Olé/Clarín that he is in his best form and hopes that Basile notices him.

Hi Guy’s

MILAN put the boots to siena today and in the process unveiled another football prodigy to the world. 18 year old Alberto Paloschi. I encourage you all to watch his great –borderline brilliant goal
on youtube.

Inter’s humiliations continue. Notch another controversial win to them. Translated for your reading pleasure from the pages of Italian sports papers………. “Esteban Cambiasso’s opener was clearly offside” “They seem to be a team happy to win without honour.” (the second quote is mine)

Roma wins over Reggina. As always Totti play was sublime.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask all my fellow argentine bloggers to write the FIGC and request – nay demand points be taken away from inter….I recommend a total of 9 to be fair. Thanks for your support.

Regards,

john,
This is the argentina soccer blog not the AC Milan/Serie-A blog. It makes sense to talk about performances of current & future argentina players and the teams they play for. But please spare us your irrelevant reports about AC Milan, Roma, Totti and what have we.

I saw the Inter-Catania game. Inter outplayed their opponents throughout. Live with it.

Not only are your “weekly Serie-A analysis and reports” a little out of place in this blog, they also dont seem to have any argentina related content. Actually, you only post about AC Milan and call for investigations on alleged malpractices by Inter. In short, you are a troll. I suggest you find an AC Milan blog or a Serie-A blog.

JOHN! I would be another one to say that you are most un-welcome over here. I write less these days over here, as work is keeping me busy. But I come here to read everyday, and I certainly do not want to waste my time on your write ups. It will be great if you can keep out, for the simple reason of being “irrelevant”. I personally have nothing against you or AC Milan/Brazil/Serie A.

FYI, I watch all the games, EPL, La Liga & Serie A. Inter outplayed Catania that is true. Cambiasso was offside that is also true. Also, I hear everywhere people are sick of AC Milan’s painful 1-0 wins. See Super Sunday on FSC for example.

Again, you forced me to write as you are wasting my precious time, as I come here to read others. Also, going by the posts, after you have posted claiming “people look forward for your posts here”, does not quite hold water.

WE WILL BE VERY HAPPY IF YOU ARE NOT HERE!
