Avellaneda Clasico: Racing’s Last Stand?
As if a clásico between Independiente and Racing needed any more reason to be heated, tomorrow’s fixture will amount to nothing more than an all-out war for la Academia, who will be fighting for their Primera lives. With a pitiful 1-8-7 record on the season, Racing’s chances of survival are hanging by a thread, and rivals Independiente, who are essentially out of the Clausura title race, would love nothing more than to send them down.
While I find Argentina’s second biggest clásico to usually be lacking in terms of football, there’s always a show in the terraces, and with the added pressure all on Racing, tomorrow’s fixture could be one to remember.
You can catch the game live this Saturday on TYC Sports USA at 1PM ET, or on various P2P sites. Here’s hoping for a good game, with

I hope there’s no violence.
The pressure is unbelievable, especially for Racing, who are flirting with relegation.
That, on top of the old rivalry that makes this match “El Clásico” de Avellaneda.

Halftime:
As I feared, a shocking game. If I want to be nice to Racing, I would say that their a team playing cautiously, hoping to not make a mistake and to look for Independiente to slip-up. If I’m being honest, I would say that Racing are a shit team who deserve their position they’ve created for themselves.
Independiente meanwhile don’t seem to be particularly interested in winning, and the three of four chances they’ve had on goal have been weak at best. German Denis is the lone bright spot, but this has all the makings of a draw. Maybe the second half will pick up.

I prefer the Boca cheekleaders.

MaxiLopez, Basile said that he’s probably going to start with a 3-4-1-2 against Brazil. Double pivot (Mascherano + Gago), with Zanetti en Maxi covering the flanks and Roman as enganche. Messi + CF(Cruz, Cavenaghi, Lopez, Agüero?)
The only thing I don’t like about that proposed formation is the defense: Burdisso-Demi-Heinze

JAMES! JAMES! JAMES!
I must be dreaming: 3-5-2??? Is this really possible? How do you know this? Reliable information??? I must be dreaming! Yahooooooooo!
This is perfect for me but i’m realistic, you need more than 2 weeks to prepare a 3-men defence. But anymay i really can’t believe it! Please confirm?
ATTACKING:
———–Carizzo————
–Coloccini–Micho–Heinze—-
———-Mascherano———-
Zanetti—-Gago———Maxi–
———-Riquelme————
—–Messi——————–
———Cavenaghi————
DEFENDING:
———–Carizzo————
Zanetti-Coloccini-Micho-Heinze
———-Mascherano———-
Messi—Gago–Maxi–Riquelme–
———-Cavenaghi———–
This would be awesome but a team needs lots of time to be efficient with this system. Only Maxi Rodriguez is prepared to play like this.

and il capitano who knows the essential and most important “2006 Sorin” role”! He’s the one who switches the 4-1-4-1 to 3-5-2. He needs to run a lot and cover counter attacks.

Full Time: 0-0
Crap.

Yes, Basile mentioned he wanted to try a couple of alternative formations, included a 3-5-2.
Most probably the other one will be a more defensive 4-4-2.

MaxiLopez, Basile confirmed it in a press conference and Olé wrote in article that he was mostly seen practicing with a 3-1-4-2. If I know Basile like I think I do then he still wants to incorporate Véron and Riquelme in the same team (why else would Véron even be called up?). I suspect Véron will be used as a deep lying playmaker next to Mascherano.
This is how Basile was seen practicing:
—————Pato————–
—Burdisso—-Demi—-Heinze—-
———Mascherano–Gago——–
Zanetti———————Maxi-
————-Messi—————
——Agüero———-Cruz——-

No Riquelme for the friendlies coz of the Copa Libertadores. I’d rather have Cavenaghi/Lopez upfront with Aguero.

if i were Basile, i would try,
Zanetti——De Michelis——Heinze
——-Gago——-Mascherno——
—–Messi——Valeri——Di Maria—–
——Aguero—–Zarate—–

Thanks a lot JAMES & ALBO. This is important news for la seleccion. I quickly checked on Olé but I didn’t find the article but i trust you. The NT staff has been devasted 2 times against Brazil using 4-3-1-2 and must be now thinking of 3-5-2, a system that has worked many times against the yellows (a magnificent 3-1 under the Pekerman era in 2003, with excellent Lucho btw).
I’m a bit lost with all these friendlies in the States.
I’ve understood that there are friendlies for the “American players” (Veron & Palermo :()and others for our “Europeans”.
What is the exact calendar and who are going to face our 2 teams?
Thanks.

MaxiLopez
No, Véron, Riquelme and Carrizo will be joining the squad for the qualifiers against Ecuador and Brazil. The friendlies (against Mexico and USA) will be played with just our European based players. But I think that Basile has the following system in mind for Brazil:
—————Carrizo/Pato—————
———Burdisso—–Demi—–Heinze—–
————-Mascherano–Veron————
–Zanetti———-Riquelme——–Maxi—
————Messi——Cavenaghi———-
Véron as the deep lying playmaker, Riquelme as the enganche. It could work on paper.

i don’t understand why basile wants to start cruz i have no problem with him being in the team but not as a starter. if arg are going to prepare for 2010 we must play the guys who will be there then either cavenaghi or lopez. these 2 guys are our future and there is no better time than the present to give them experience with the nt. i am also dissapointed the d milito has fallen out of favor with basile. the guy is still quality and even though past season hasn’t been his best i wouldn’t give up on him just yet. glad to see veron back in the side he has always been one of my favourites.

Thanks ALBO, now it is clear!
JAMES,
I really don’t understand what is doing Veron in the NT. He is old, not enough physical for such an important role. Afterall, we have Gago, Cambiasso & Lucho & even Banega who are perfect for this position and much better than la brutta. It confirms that Basile is only focusing to qualify for the WC and not preparing his team on the long term.
The 3-men defence will only be effective if the 2 midfielders and the couple Zanetti/Maxi are careful defensively. Veron is not good defensively. We’ll see what Basile does.
I hope the coach is gonna test the system against Mexico & USA. And start Carizzo against Ecuador for god sake!

AIMAR10,
Here is what i posted in january concerning a team’s WC preparation:
“What is funny with this sport is that a futbol team acts like a company. A coach needs to fix classified objectives: 1) Qualify for the WC. 2) Win the WC. But you can’t dissociate them. You need to prepare WC with the qualifiers and with the same group of 20 players to make them understand themselves on the field. If you want to win a WC, you need at least 3 years to prepare it. A lot of European teams will only participate to the next Euro to prepare WC 2010. It doesn’t mean they don’t want to win this competition, they just want to think “longer term”, and think about a single big goal (WC) that can be reached by achieving objectives (Euro, friendlies). The best and latest example is Aimé Jacquet who excluded Ginola & Cantona from the French NT for the 1996 English Euro to train Djorkaeff & Zidane in an international and tuff competition. France would have maybe won in 1996 with Cantona & Ginola (who were really excellent at that time in England!) but would Zidane have made win France in 1998? That’s why some say that it is a mistake to use Veron, Ibarra, Crespo, Pato, Cruz or maybe Zanetti to prepare a WC and it is very understandable as you know that Argentine young talent is absolutely outstanding”.
If Basile builds the NT around a 3-5-2 system, you will never hear me criticizing him anymore ![]()

What we have to understand is the pressure Basile is starting to feel from fans and media in Argentina about the match against Brazil, on June 18.
That in itself is a big target right now.
So much so that some people are taking the match with Ecuador for granted, and that is a huge mistake.
But the truth is that argy fans are waiting, not without some degree of anxiety, the game with Brazil.
Given the bad late results, there’s a possibility that another loss could cost Basile the job.
In my opinion, things are going to change direction after the match in Belo Horizonte and then, the albicelestes will start to focus more on the WC.
But Basile’s job, right now is to qualify Argentina to WC10.

I don’t understand why Basile feels the need to advertise what he’s going to do before he does it. For instance, against Brazil in the Copa final, he actually said before the match that the team was going to play the same way as it had done throughout the tournament. That made it easy for Dunga to counter. Now, we’re coming upto the Brazil game, and instead of playing his cards close to his chest, again he is advertising the formation that he will be playing and giving tactics away. So, there’s no element of surprise because he’s taken it away.
