Argentine Clausura Could Be Decided This Afternoon
Should Estudiantes grab anything less than a draw against Colón in La Plata this afternoon, and if River Plate defeat Olimpo at the Monumental, then los millonarios would claim the 2008 Clausura, their 33rd local title overall.
How likely is that? Well, both Colón and Olimpo are in or near the relegation zone, and River and Estudiantes, first and second in the table respectively, have certainly dropped points against “lesser” opposition this season. And with San Lorenzo just behind in third place, should both teams lose today, it would make for one hell of a final weekend.
The River - Olimpo match will be live on FSC and FSE at 3PM ET, with Estudiantes - Colón at the same time on TyC Sports.

are we now playing 4-3-3. we have 3 strikers now. or maybe Aguero drops back. either way, I like this move.

None of the Arg players made any protest against Mastreoni before the red card. What coud it have been?

this game has gotten real chippy

Masche could have got red there. I dunno what Arg are complaining about there.

Now - I can understand wanting to kick landon donovan becuase he’s a prat, but that mascherano tackle was pretty bad.
Mascherano OFF (does this mean that he won’t be able to play in the qulaifiers?)

Aguero off, Banega on.

There is no one left on the field who can score for Arg.

masche is off? I thought he got a yellow

Not good second half, too many substitutions, we’ve lost our rhythm, forgotten how to pass and put ourselves under pressure. You wouldn’t think we were playing against 10 men.

He should have gotten a straight red.
Honestly, I’m kind of glad about this result, since it will put an end to the arguments that I was reading that Arg don’t need Riquelme. The US played 10 men behind the ball, and they always defend well, so I;m not surprised that Arg didn’t score, but it was alarming that they didn’t have that much possession in the game!

It doesn’t mean much to play against 10 men if all the men are playing defense.

the one good thing to come out of this game is that Cruz may never play another game for La Seleccion

Man of the Match — Julio Cruz

the second half was way too chaotic…no flow to our game at all. not sure what experiment Basile was trying to do there, but it clearly did’nt work. We definately need Riquelme in the middle to control the flow otherwise we look uncontrolled…esp when Messi is off too. At least we didn’t lose, but yikes what a difference from the Mexico game.

How many clear cut opportunities did we have on goal in the second half? Not many coz there was no creative force in the midfield.
It would have been better to leave Messi on and replace Cruz at the start of the secxond half.

Right, well i’m disappointed, you would expect the team to get better in subsequent matches, but that second half was a step backwards.

Basile didn’t want to play Messi at all. He wanted this to be an experimental side. It’s sort of alarming to see that our only real dominant midfield presence is Riquelme. I’m not sure why Basile doesn’t call Aimar or Lucho Gonzalez up. It’s like it’s Riquelme, or no midfield at all.
Basile was obligated to play Messi for obvious reasons.

I think the main problem was too many substitutions, the team lost its flow b/c of it and they didn’t have time to settle before another substitution was made. I get its a friendly so it doesn’t matter, but that 2nd half was terrible to watch…the US could see we were unsettled and took advantage of it. I dont like how much we rely so much on Messi and Riquelme, what happens when either of them gets injured?? We should have options and we should have confidence in those options. We have some great players, but they need time to settle and play as a team. I dont know if Basile is going to change anything, but i’m a bit worried after today…there was no reason for us to lose control so entirely…where was the passing, possession? The weather might have been a factor too, i dont know…but i hope we get it together before Ecuador. Btw, thats on Tuesday right?
