the full Argentina squad for the qualifiers and Argentine watch
‘Coco’ Basile has added 5 domestic-based players to the previous squad list, which now looks a bit more reassuringly complete. Additions are in italics.
Goalkeepers: Roberto Abbondanzieri (Getafe, Spain), Oscar Ustari (Getafe), Juan Pablo Carrizo (River Plate, Argentina)
Defenders: Daniel Diaz (Getafe), Gabriel Heinze (Real Madrid, Spain), Gabriel Milito (Barcelona, Spain), Fabricio Coloccini (Deportivo La Coruna, Spain), Javier Zanetti (Inter, Italy), Nicolas Burdisso (Inter), Martin Demichelis (Bayern Munich, Germany), Hugo Ibarra (Boca Juniors, Argentina)
Midfielders: Fernando Gago (Real Madrid), Maximiliano Rodriguez (Atletico Madrid, Spain), Jonas Gutierrez (Real Mallorca, Spain), Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal, Spain), Esteban Cambiasso (Inter), Javier Mascherano (Liverpool, England), Federico Insua (America, Mexico), Fernando Belluschi (River Plate), Daniel Montenegro (Independiente, Argentina)
Forwards: Javier Saviola (Real Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Carlos Tevez (Manchester United, England), German Denis (Independiente)
As I said above, the additions are reassuring because they plug some holes in the initial list of players called up. The most notable addition is German Denis‘ first ever call up, which is in my opinion well earned, having scored 15 goals in 13 games this season. I’d still like to have Crespo, but at least we have a no.9 now.
Argentine Watch
(If you’ve got someone to add to the list, please do so in the comments.)
Carlos Tevez scored Manchester United’s first as they overran Wigan 4-0 in the Premiership.
Leo Messi scored his 8th goal in his 6th consecutive game and led Barcelona to victory over Sergio Aguero’s Atletico Madrid. Maxi’s indifferent form has seen him consigned to the sub’s bench in recent games, and he came on for Jose Antonio Reyes around the 50th minute mark as Atletico tried to break through the Barca defence.
Gonzalo Higuain scored a late goal to make it 2-0 as Real Madrid beat Recreativo. Gaby Heinze had a couple of dodgy moments at the back but seems to be settling in alright overall.
Pato let in a dodgy goal from Venezuelan striker Juan Arango as his Getafe team were beaten by 10-men Mallorca. I’m fairly sure Jonas Gutierrez is still carrying a knock as he didn’t play for the home side.
Cristian Ledesma has been ruled out for around 1 to 2 months for Lazio, having sustained an injury in training.
Julio Cruz scored a double as Inter beat Napoli, for whom Ezequiel Lavezzi was a constant threat. Javier Zanetti has had a great start to the season, especially when playing rightback in place of Maicon when he was suspended.
Porto beat Academica 1-0 and continue to lead the Portuguese league thanks to a Lucho Gonzalez penalty.

Maxilopez,
what I have said earlier:
How can a loser ever win? This applies both to Basile and AFA. They are
both losers and they will reiterate that again. Argentina has the best world class players but does NOT have a world class team because of serious
deficiency in tactics and strategy. They need to get rid of Julio Grodona of the AFA, bring someone of the caliber of Arsene Wenger. Juergen Klinnsman can also do that job. Remember as fans we have been waiting since 1986. Is it not time for a change or a revolution? Carlos Bilardo, a medical Doctor and winner of the 1986 WC as a coach and Diego Armanda Maradona, winner of the 1986 wc also think it is time for a change. Unfortunately, the argentina public is way too passive. and as fans we can only watch that great players such as Riquelme, Messi, Mascherano, Sorin, Zanetti, Crespo get wasted away without the glory they so well deserved. Their only mistakes are that they were born in the wrong country. What a waste of talent!
Regards to all who truly care,
Ken

well said Ken. Though some people might hate you for saying that, I just want to say that you took words out of my mouth.
I love to see lovely football, thats why I am a fan of Argentina. I am not an Argentine, but my heart is there, it is not bound by the boundaries of the nations. I hurts me when we lose, I do not want our team to lose.
As you said, its been long, 1986, I was a kid. Its really time, its long overdue. We have so many great players. And right now, I believe we can beat almost anyone, apart from Brazil.

Ken,
?????????Argentineans fans are way to passive. Do you have tyc sports. You don’t know what your talking about so with all respect, SHUT UP you have no idea what you talking about the argentineans in argentina know way more about football then you will ever know. AND FYE they do not like Grondona. And if they wanted to put anyone in charge it would be Diego Maradona not a forgeiner like Arsene Wenger or Juergen Klinnsman. A forgiener will never be in charge of AFA. Maybe a COach never in charge of the AFA. In tyc sports, they say if Basile doesn’t win both game. He would get sacked and if he does and they say one of these managers would get the job Diego Maradona Fabio Capello Jose Mourinho Mario Kempes Hugo Tocalli Diego Simeone Daniel Passarella and Ricardo de La Volpe

Ken,
I am from Argentina. I applaud you man. I am an engineer. I hope
someday we will meet at a world cup game. Your analytical mind is
phenomenal. Have you ever been to argentina? Please do not pay attention to my compatriot Albo. We have many like him in Argentina who as you describe are passive and refuse to rock the boat because of their own insecurities. Keep on the writing Ken!

What is this, Rio?
Why are you so upset with me?
I don’t even remember having talked with you more than once and you made it clear we disagree.
What is all this agressive attitude?

Local players for qualifier
5 names:
German Denis (Independenti) ST
Fernando Belluschi (River Plate) Winger
Juan Pablo Carrizo (River Plate) GK
Hugo Ibarra (Boca Juniors) FB
Daniel Montenegro (Independenti) Winger
The 25 players enlisted are for both qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela. First match on 13.October at 5:30pm, second one in Maracaibo on the 16th.
We got some wingers and forward backups with this local player list. I don’t see how Denis will get to play with the current form Tevez and Messi are in though. And even if the 2 have problems, there are still Saviola and Aguero waiting for the call!
And other thing I just had to ask, WTF IS IBARRA DOING HERE? Is this Basile’s great white hope for fullback? The dude is 33!
saludos,
Rio

WHat does it matter that your an engineer? I agree with Albo point of you.
Ken you have no idea what your talking about. Its people like you who ruin the NT, you have no faith over your players or the Coach because at the end of the game its the players on the field who wins games not the manager. And we have the best players in the world. We just gotta have faith in our managers and players its there job they obviously know more about football then you will ever know so just have faith in your manager he knows more then YOU.

Golazo,
With all due respect to you as a 14 year old, I am not
an engineer. As Maradona stated earlier, I also do NOT
have a Ph.D in Physics. What I do have is a background in
Physics and Optometry.
Golazo, you are 14 years old. So you can wait. I am tired
of waiting for a trophy, having waited since 1986! . It pains me to see a player of the caliber of Riquelme and Messi retiring without having been a winner of a wc. Do you get it buddy? Regards to you Golazo

Sorry, about the egineer it was directed to Rio. We are going to win the next world cup. Basile probably wouldn’t be there but if he is I’m going to support him.

Golazo,
Before we win , we have to qualify first. Bielsa, an argentinean, current
coach of Chile will keep throwing long balls at us. If we win, I will be ecstatic. Regards,
Ken

I leave you guys to it to go to bed, and this happens. Golazo, you went out of line. Ken, so did you. But in the end, I can see you’re both adults who understand that we’re all Argentina fans here, so that’s fine for now.
Back to the football: Is the line-up confirmed yet?

Linda,
Because you believe that I went out of line, I will
NEVER write one single line again. May God bless
you all.
Farewell to you all

Feel free to come back and contribute again whenever you feel like.
By the way, I just read a blog post by a Man U fan saying that Tevez hogs the ball too much. God, some people. (And if Tevez is a ball hog, they’ve never seen Messi play, obviously.)

messay…if you live in usa go to soccertv.com….it shows all the soccer matches that get shown in us in all channels even ppv….and yes goal tv is showing the both argentina games on delay…..linda….barcelona may play with speed …but they also guard the ball and pass it around quite a bit….i love how henry messi and ronaldinho get toghether to form small triangles and walls to beat the defence…watch the second goal againts ath madrid…i can see that working for us perfectly..although i have to agree..the barcelona system is not a perfect system for riquelme … but i still think its good for messi an aguero playing on the opossite of messi..jsut so u know in independiente aguero played plenty on the left wing and did awesome stuff..iff not watch the goal againts racing where he picks the ball at mid field on the left and goes all the way to scora ala messi and maradona….i just want messi in a place where he can succeed…and i think aguero can play more than one position because he can dribble score pass and head….ken….you get offended by everything..maybe you should reconsider enterin a discussion if your gonna get mad everytime someone disagrees with you..speciallly when you say that argentines have no passion…you oviously never been to a soccer game in argentina or even walked the streets..just ask banega if argentinians have no passion……btw ..i hope rolfi gets a chance to play some minutes…hopefully replacing riquelme if he is ineffective…rolfi is so fast and can pass so well i think he would compliment messi perfectly….and whoever said that belluchi should sub in for riquelme hasnt seen river play a lot….beluchi is no enganche ..he always plays winger…and he always has his best games when the creative role goes to someone else..like ortega….last thing..someone earlier said alexiz sanchez is as good as aguero…really??? am i missing something…it musta been that same guy linda was talking about..the same guy that said some guy in the portuguese league is a ss good as messi…

I think it was MaxiLopez who asked me a few days ago “why are people in Argentina so indifferent to the upcoming matches. (If it was someone else, I’m sorry for the misquote.)
Right now it’s getting all the attention. It took until this week but now is in first page everywhere and it is only sharing importance with the Pumas.
Fortunately, they won’t be competing for fans this time. Argentina-Chile is played this Saturday and Pumas-Springboks for rugby WC semifinals is on Sunday.
People know Messi is in Buenos Aires, same Agüero, Tevez, Riquelme, Mascherano, they wanna see them playing together. I believe Messi makes Argentina something special.
Of course the Monumental at Nuñez is totally sold out.
Everybody wants Messi to do well and give them a reason to dream of a better future.
There is something special this time. Messi, he is that something special.
And if Bielsa throws 2 or 3 defenders at him, it’s up to our other guys to take advantage of the empty lanes.
By the way, today was the day for nice words. Basile plus several players (Heinze, Riquelme, Zanetti) talked to the media and expressed their respect and admiration for “el loco” Bielsa.
Bielsa in time felt grateful for those words and mentioned that Argentina during these qualifiers was going to be in the eyes of the whole world.
Other South American coaches also complemented the talent Argentina was fielding.
Luis Fernando Suárez, (Ecuador): Argentina is now the “reference team” in South America and they already have a place in WC10.
Jorge Pinto, (Colombia): There is no better talent than them.
All this hype of course is not what we want coming into qualifiers but I guess these players, and more specifically Lionel Messi, make it impossible to avoid.
It is very possible that, from the start, Chile will play pressure defence across the entire pitch. This is going to complicate the flow of our game. It is a very annoying style of football and Argentina might commit lots of errors.
Basile and his players know all this. The deal is to support it and try to avoid getting scored on, at least until the end of first half. Because it’s impossible to play with that intensity for more than 50 to 60 minutes. I would almost say that if Chile don’t score early in the game, it’ll be hard for them to beat us.
Dale Rojo!!, I was the one who said Alexis Sánchez is as good as Agüero.
I’m sorry if you took it as an insult. It was not my intention.
I’m a liberal Boca fan, I understand (by your nickname) that you are an Independiente fan. Alexis plays for River, if I hadn’t seen an enormous talent in that kid I wouldn’t have talked about him. I love Agüero. He’s special. But Sánchez is special too.
I’d like to see Rolfi Montenegro and German Denis playing together too. They’re “in the zone” these days, aren’t they? . Un abrazo.

yeah i love independiente….and i didnt take it as an insult…im just surprised by the statement thats all…maybe i should watch him a lil more before making up my mind but i doubt it will change,,,,since aguero es mi idolo…..i seen aguero do things that make me stand up and yelll….like the goal againts river plate en la pretemporada…and keep in mind aguero is been playing for independiente since he was 15….i dont think u can compare them…on thing i love about sanchez..the kid has a lot of heart….i see him run after every ball like its his last chance ..i love that…..albo i went to the boca independiente game this last one….boca seems to have the refs in their pockets….it was so frustrating seeing every call go to boca..it was still a great game….sorry if i jumped to conclusions about sanchez…but i really dont think u can compare the two…aguero has already acomplished a lot more..but im cheering for sanchez to be great…..i think not only should we be fans of argentine soccer…but also be fans of south american soccer since we are all brothers…

World cup is in the distance but we still need to mold a team for it. As a result, we need two younger right full backs. We need a young replacement for requelme. For the upcoming qualifiers, i’d love to see aguero in for tevez and Insua in for Combiasso.
We need D’allessandro in this team. He would replace combiasso for me.

I am a die-hard Argentina fan, but aboveall, I’m a big time Crespo fan. Argentina is incomplete without Crespo. He is the genious, the master the killer. Had he played in Copa America final, the outcome could have been in Argentina’s favor. You can’t expect Requilme to score goals in set pieces in every match. Keep Crespo!!
