Saying Gracias

June 20th, 2008 | By: Christian | 377 Comments »

Let me take a brief moment to thank all of the readers and posters who this past week made this blog the most popular of any non-Europe page on the World Cup Blog, a great acheivement considering the extensive coverage of the Euros right now. Looking over the numbers, it turns out we had over 3,000 page visits last Wednesday alone. Unfortunately those awesome numbers weren’t rewarded with a better result than the 0-0 draw we all sat through, but great numbers nonetheless, so thanks.

It’ll be a long summer from here till the next qualifier againt Paraguay on September 9th in Argentina. In the meantime, while we see what changes will come from the NT, we can see what will come of the end of the Clausura season, what Argie players will be shopped around during the off season, and of course the Beijing Olympics.

I look forward to all your input as always.

Well, it was a good win, and we won the Copa de Rosario.

Since the first game against Chile, the team has improved defensively and the passing has got better. Standout players today were Sergio Araujo, Gonzalo Olid Apasa, Ezequiel Cirigliano and Nicolas Gonzalez when he came on as a sub. The rest of the players played well.

Sergio Batista was at the match, since it was the final.

I have to say that this team was better than the one that went to the Under 17 World Cup.

Does a player have the (ethic) right to buy the remains of his contract to move to another club?
I don’t mean to get philosophical about it but it really is a matter of ethics.

I was never a fan of Pele’s opinions, but he does raise a question here, (in my opinion).
What do you guys think?

Well let’s face it, did Ronaldo have to sign a new contract if he wanted to leave so bad? Not really, so why sign a new contract? Was he forced into it, if he was then he may have a case for slavery, but, if not then he’s just an idiot and very disloyal.

this sort of stuff is common place in North American sports. how many NBA stars (Vince Cater, Iverson, Shaq, etc…) have signed deals with their current teams only to want out part way through the contract. Then once they don’t get their trade demand full filled, they start dogging it and finally, their team is forced to trade em 75 cents on the dollar.

It’s an athlete driven sport, we may not like it, but if a player doesn’t want to play for his club, in this day and age, there isn’t much a team can do to convince the player to stay. Let’s not forget in most sports, until the 80s, owners used to thumb players into smaller deals, force them to sign below their paygrade, rampant collusion, etc… now, the players have the upper hand, but back in the day when teams used to get away with dirty tactics, the media never reported stuff like that as the media need to be in the good graces of the teams. They players though, are fair game to attack.

If Ronaldo wants to leave, from a business perspective, Man U should let him go (if the asking price is close to 100M). Get an out and out striker, a winger to replace Ronaldo and with money still left over, I think Man U will be fine. Can you imagine the circus atmosphere / soap opera if he comes back to Man U…

Man Utd slap in £20M bid for Tottenham’s Berbatov
tribalfooball.com - July 12, 2008

Manchester United made a £20 million offer last night for Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.

The Sun says United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expects to wrap up the deal within the next week after making his opening offer.

Berbatov has been top of Fergie’s wanted list all year and now he has turned his interest into a hard cash bid.

United are convinced they can lure the Bulgarian to Old Trafford with the promise of Champions League football and an £80,000- a-week pay packet.

Emil Dantchev, Berbatov’s agent, said: “I cannot make any comment until there is official confirmation from Tottenham or United.”

i am happy aimar is out of 2nd division teams, i would have much prefered him going somewhere else, but i guess benfica isnt that bad. As you guys know he was always my favorite player till messi came along.

by the way how come no one is talking about the fact that barca has now got alves?

this will play a huge deal on messi’ game. i would have to say this was a signing that really will help messi alot. that right side of the field is gonna be lethal for barca, come next year. it will be awesome.

Nápoli are playing friendlies with second tier teams from North Italy and Austria as a part of their preseason work.
Germán Dennis doesn’t look like he’s waisting any time.
4 goals in 2 matches.
I hope “El Tanque” scores a ton of more goals. He is a real 9 and he’s hungry.

Man Utd reportedly interested in Atletico Madrid’s Aguero
By Ian Ferris - July 13, 2008

Sergio Aguero’s agent has hinted that Manchester United may be about to bid for the 20 year old Atletico Madrid striker.
Jose Segui, has claimed that a leading English side is interested in signing the striker and it isn’t Chelsea.

Segui claimed: “I have had interest from a leading English team and they have asked me to approach Atletico with a bid. I cannot say more until I have spoken to the club about the offer. All I can tell you is that it is one of the best teams in Europe and it’s not Chelsea.”

The Atletico youngster is reportedly valued at around £35 million.

Aguero is one of the hottest young properties in Europe, he scored 19 goals in La Liga last season to finish third in the top scorer?s chart behind Dani Guiza and Luis Fabiano.

On a different topic, tomorrow Monday all of the argy olympic football players meet at the Ezeiza Training Center to concentrate and work only on the olympic games.
Pareja was okd by Anderlecht (correct me if the team is wrong) and there’s no more excuses.
I already miss the animal, Tevez.

Terrible news: 150 Argentina players including Carrizzo & Denis are involved in a passport traffic. Governments & justice don’t like this kind of stuff. If things are proved, it would be a sport & human disaster that I let you immagine.

Messay, Valencia has recently not been a 2nd division team.

Aimar has achieved more than Riquelme in Europe (CL finalist, Spanish titles) but I agree it’s stupid to compare these 2 players (who should have been both in our Argentina starting team during 6 years). Rui Costa even says it: “Aimar, Riquelme, Deco are the best #10 in the world”. I’m sure he knows what is talking about :)

Aimar is still not at Benfica at all. English teams like the 2 Liverpool clubs can still react. One month ago, Rui Costa sent him a Benfica shirt with “Aimar #10″ written on it. Pablito has made his (human) choice though. But Zaragoza’s president will decide regarding the best offer.

Whats going on is that if you define who is the worlds best it is Messi but if you ask who had the better year you have to say the guy whose team won their league and champions league. That is just the way awards work. Now if Messi can lead Argentina to the Gold and then start the year off strong while Ronaldo sits on his butt then maybe things will change. ALso Messi had two things Ronaldo does not which might influence some peoples view Class and Humility. Oh yeah and Ronaldo did not look to good in the Euros either.

New thread open. Again, apologies for the delay. There will be more updates as we near the Olympics.

As for tickers to the WCQ, try a company called TANGOL. They usually do Primera games but you might get lucky. Ticketek is the Argentine version of Ticketmaster might have tickets on sale. Also, check with local hotels and hostels who might have some available.
