Projected starting line-up against Chile

October 11th, 2007 | By: Linda | 28 Comments »

According to Ole, this is ‘almost certainly’ the line-up we’ll be using:

Abbondanzieri; Zanetti, Demichelis, Milito, Heinze; Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Cambiasso; Riquelme; Messi, Tevez.

It’s pretty much what we expected, and the problems of the short-short combination up front have been discussed many times over in the comments.  So we hope for the best, I guess, and keep our (metaphorical) knives sheathed for now, at least until the game ends.

I’ll put up a post where we can discuss the match as it happens well before the game kicks off.  I might not be around personally to comment during the match itself because of technical difficulties, but I figure you guys would want somewhere to post live.

(By the way, I want to thank all the commenters here for making me feel welcome.  It’s great to have you all here.)

I like the starting line up although I think Aguero has been scoring more goals lately it is hard to keep Cambiasso out.

Toddutah, what the you think about Cambiasso, the winger? Do you think he’s correctly used? Why was he bad against Brazil?

Cambiasso excels as a central midfielder and not as a winger. He’s a monster for Inter. He should be played right in front of Mascherano. But we all know he’ll be on the right side of the diamond in the middle.

Bielsa made a statement that he was sure Chile will surprise Argentina.

I agree I agree I agree.
Why is cambiasso used as a winger. He is so good for Inter I know. If we want to keep the diamond (thats how I played last night also over my computer) I would have Tevez/Lucho in the left. That opens up the space for Aguero/german also.

Tevez also likes to come down. Lucho is good too.

However, the reason Basile wants to play Cambiasso, I think is for the defensive reasons. We can swtich to double 5s while defending.

When we consider the real position of our players, nevermind the original formation, it’ll depend also on how the opponent field their players.
Remember this is a game of action and reaction.
And this game with Chile will be hard to call when it comes to possition because the Chileans are gonna be all over us for at least 45 minutes.
So we’ll see how it developes.

Such a formation may work for small teams like Chile, but not for the giants. What is wrong with Basile? :(

—————— Pato
Zanetti — Demichelis — Milito — Heinze
—————- Mascherano
—– Maxi ——————- Cambiasso
—————– Riquelme
———- Messi ——— Tevez

At this point, I’m OK with the line-up and formation. So, what Bielsa’s plan? Don’t get me wrong. I just want to present the other side of football. My assumption for Bielsa’s plan is:

- to distrupt Maxi and Cambiasso’s game
- that’ll isolate Mascherano & Riquelme defensively & offensively
- Defensively, if Mascherano is NOT supported properly by Maxi and Cambiasso, our CBs will be forced to fill gaps left by Maxi and Cambiasso. Then our central defense will be exposed
- Offensively, if Maxi and Cambiasso failed to support Riquelme, it’ll reduce our attacks with only Messi & Tevez
- to execute this, Chile requires optimum strength & speed

So, it’s crucial for Maxi and Cambiasso to control & stabilize the midfield. This is hard & intense battle for them. I hope they’ll prevail.

Cheers

My thoughts are that Cambiasso is not an ideal winger but i do think that it is a good tactical decsion for this game because cambiaso is good in tight situations with crisp passes and that is what Chile will be like at the start of the game. Then after half you will sub cambiasso out but he is a great defender and can attack Ie the magic goal in the last world cup.. I predict that Cambiasso will score ! Just a hunch but Chile will be focused on Messi Riquelme and tevez and Maxi will be marked closely as well if cambiasso has a lot of energy he could get some chances .

Thank you AHnyjc, I was thinking to be very lonely on the Cambiasso topic…

It can be very dangerous to use a player in his wrong position.

Mancini even prefers to use Zanetti on the left flank instead of Cambiasso. I admit that they play a real 4-4-2 at Inter, so it’s a bit different.

Debasish, I believe that Basile likes ChuChu because of his left foot.
I don’t see double 5 in Basile’s 4-3-1-2 formation. If someone can explain me? I only see 3 guys in the defensive middle that attack and never come back. I need to forget the game against Brazil, it was really a special game and a bad example.

There seem to be people in Malaysia who know futbol ;)

The choice of Cambiasso has no tactical reasons. Basile would have played Cambiasso on the left against Chili, Italy or Zimbabwe. He always use the same starting 11 with the same 4-3-1-2 which is not a good thing because we are really predictable. Only Messi is not.

hey guys!!! hi albo!! hehehe …im disapointed that aguero doesnt get to start but im sure he will sub him in in the second half prob give him between 15 and 30 minutes to see how he plays with messi and if they do good im sure he will start vs venezuela..i love tevez(ill never forget what he did for us last summer olympics….but he has done nothing yet when he plays with messi…he is invisible…i hope in the second half coco subs aguero in for tevez and montenegro for el cucho…..move messi down to maxi spot and maxi to cambiaso’s spot and leave montenegro and el kun on top/…..i think that will be fun!!!

i think since we are not gonna play with a “9″ then dont have the forward pretend to be a nine….i think we should concentrate on holding the ball and defeating the defence with short first touch passess and clever walls….

Actually, 4-3-1-2 is a successful formation and Argentina is famous with it.

>>>I don’t see double 5 in Basile’s 4-3-1-2 formation. If someone can explain me? >>>

MaxiLopez, as I understand, when Maxi Rodriguez moves up to level with Riquelme, in theory, Cambiasso should stay as a stopper, in fact Mascherano should make some room for him.
At that point you have a 4-2-2-2.
The problem I’ve seen is that Cambiasso moves up too and that’s when there’s a gap between defenders and forwards.
4-3-1-2 is a formation that allows lateral backs to move up the field so the mid-fielders have to be very careful with the balance of the team.

Good morning/afternoon/evening, everyone! I agree with Albo: the formation is more like a 4-2-2-2 a lot of time with Cambiasso and Masche forming the double 5. My problem with that is the lack of width. Teams have really hurt us by taking advantage of that before.

My ideal formation for argentina is 3-4-3 but i’l work with the coach’s choice of 4-3-1-2. I think Andres D’allesandro should be given the left wing role - He is creative, young and can change a game in an instant. He also defends well with Zaragossa. I love Requelme and his style of play but i think we need another player to tip the diamond who can go forward well, fall back and tackle, create and has alot of pace to compliment Messi and Aguero (not Tevez). We need some wingbacks for the worldcup too.

Leroy i agree with you completly especially in d’alessandros thing hes talented but he has one problem which is that he needs to be controled by the manager so he wont keep the ball with him for a long time like he does in zaragoza all of the time …. and ill be shocked if aguero wouldnt play from the begining the guy has proven himself in the spanish league its the best time for him to score his first national goal ! hes perfect in 3-4-2-1 !! this short guy is good on corners also which is great !!
