December 9th, 2008 | By: Christian | 190 Comments »

One year ago, not long after I began moderating the blog, I asked everyone to submit their favorite stories from 2007. As December winds down, I invite you all once again to share your thoughts on the year that was Argentina 2008, as well as what you look most forward to in ‘09.

So as before, please post your choices on the following topics:

* Best Game
* Worst or Most Disappointing Game
* Best Individual Performance
* Best Goal
* Breakout Player Award

And for 2009:
* Predict What the Biggest Storyline Will Be
* Who Will Be the Next Big Player from Argentina
* Which Player Will Have the Most Impact

The above topics are just a guide, please feel free to include any other points you wish. Your answers can include either national and club football, but obvioulsy, please keep it Argentina-focused. Have fun!

As for Higuain yes he missed some chances but the one he made was not easy and it was the winner.

Golazo, Tigre have to win by 2 goals or more to be the champions.
Any other score will favor Boca.
They play tomorrow Tuesday.

Maxi,
Arsene Wenger has denied the rumor of Carlos Tevez. Would have been good. I do not understand why Arsenal never has an argentine.

Only thing I have ever heard from Arsene about Argetines is when we played France and won 1-0 (Saviola goal). Arsene Wenger said “What a great defender he is, wish I could afford him” – about whom? guess….Gabriel Milito.

I never really thought he is that great. These the reasons which keeps me thinking, I do not understand the game quite yet :) .

Todd, yes so true, he cracked the hardest one, but missed the easier ones. However, I must say, he did not blow anyone. Bad luck (the infamous wooden frame) and the GK prevented him. One from the corner was great. He got it down by his chest and in the same touch opened him up completely, he just smashed the cross bar from there.

Hi DEBASISH,

Wenger praised many argentinos that day: Gago, Lucho, Saviola,… The commentator asked him to confirm that Milito was a great defender. So he said: “huh yes” :)
European football approach is totally different than South Americans. French like playing physical and tactical so this is the reason why comments are quite positive when it comes to player like Milito (who is a physical monster).
I think Wenger is afraid of the Argentineans’ time to adapt to the English culture. He isn’t reluctant to hire Brazileiros though. Players like Palacio or Tevez would perfectly fit his system.

A special mention to a player who defies everything we know about what a #9 should be like.
Diego Forlán. With 10 goals in 10 matches, he finds his way to the nets.
No matter how many goals Agüero, Maxi or Simao score.
Forlán is a small Batistuta. Too bad he’s Uruguayan :-)
One of my favorite players and a great guy indeed.

Stupidity is free and for all…
The reason Riquelme is not going to play the very last and most important match of the year for Boca, is that he has accumulated 5 yellow cards during the Apertura season.
(He misses the next game).
Now, Román is not much of a defender, we all know, so where do those yellow cards come from?
The answer is :

1. For removing his shirt after scoring a very important goal.
2. For complaining to the referee about the distance allowed for a free kick.

Riquelme and ALL of the argy players who do that, know darn well they’re gonna get carded, but it is inserted in the soul of Argy football, to do something stupid on purpose and earn a yellow.
End result this week: Riquelme misses his most important game.
Advantage Tigre :-)

albo,
i think the rule is if tigre win they are champions, because they beat boca and san lorenzo in the apertura.
correct me if i am wrong.

Alfio, that would be the case if there’s a tie in points and goal difference.
If Tigre win 2-0 there will be a total tie and Tigre would be the champions because they beat Boca during the season.
But if Tigre only beats Boca 1-0, Boca would have better goal difference and would get the title.
I hope I didn’t confuse you :-)

Well, ALBO, these are the FIFA rules. A player who enjoys a gol is as guilty as a Materazzi who tackles everything from behind.

NOORI,
You are welcome. Sorry you can’t watch the video :(

Would love to see palacio move to Arsenal . That would be a great fit. With his pace and touch he would fit right in. Another player that i think would fit nicely at Arsenal is Di Maria.

thanx albo.

maxi lopez, yes its very hard to score in the french league.
like you noticed 75% of the matches end with 0-0,1-0,2-0,2-1.
marseille games are excluded from this,in each marselle game there are 3+ goals.

I completely agree. I hate the yellow card for taking the shirt off. They take the passion out of the game. They can show a yellow card perhaps for extended celebration, but then you always have the option to play extra minutes. I would love to see players celebrate.

One of the greatest moment of the game – Carlos Tevez’s first goal for West Ham United. It will be insane if you want to take that aspect out of the game.

I have not seen him play much does anyone think that he might have a future with the NT ?

Insua Eyes Starting Spot At Liverpool
Anfield’s Argie youngster is hoping to make his mark on the first team after his impressive showing against the Gunners at the weekend…
»Comments (27) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Emiliano Insua was handed his second Premier League start of the season when Liverpool visited Arsenal on Sunday evening, getting the nod ahead of Italian full-back Andrea Dossena.

The Reds could only manage a 1-1 draw against a 10-man Gunners outfit, but Insua caught the eye with his raiding runs and dangerous delivery from the left flank.

The 19-year-old Argentine was thrilled to get the gig at the Emirates, and he hopes to be given another chance when Bolton Wanderers travel to Merseyside on Boxing Day.

“The boss (Rafael Benitez) gave me an opportunity to show what I can do and maybe I might get another chance to play at Anfield against Bolton,” he told Liverpool’s official website.

“Anfield is always a very special place to play and hopefully I can stay in the first team squad.

“The manager has given me a lot of confidence and I will keep training hard in every session and always give my best, because when you get your chance you have to take it.

“There is a lot of competition for places at Liverpool but that is a good thing.”

Insua arrived in England on an initial loan deal in 2007, before completing a permanent switch from Boca Juniors during the last transfer window.

Tonight, at 5:45 pm Eastern time: Tigre-Boca
Tigre have a unique opportunity to make history.
Never in their life have this club been so close to glory.
Boca, playing without Paletta, Riquelme, Palermo and a Rodrigo Palacio who hasn’t played more than 15 minutes this year, are still a decent team, but Tigre will have to play the game of their lives to beat Boca by 2 or more.
I know most of these matches are tough in the midfield and football is not too artistic.
The main question will be if Tigre will show up for the occasion or will get intimidated by the blue and gold jersey.

Belated thread up now for Boca-Tigre final. Too bad I’m at work today because I would love to see this (and root for Tigre, obviously).

Tigre have no reason to be intimidated Albo, at least they shouldn’t be. Boca may be one of “Big 5,” but they are certainly beatable, and Tigre have had a great run since joining the Primera, finishing as high as 2nd last year.

It has the makings of a great match, so let’s hope both teams deliver.

Todd
I am really hopeful about Insua. I have seen him play whenever he has played for Liverpool. He is a little short, but thats OK. He had a very good game against Arsenal. Remember Arsenal is a fast and skillful team. Insua did pretty well moving up and down.

Liverpool, is a very tactical team defensively. They are into zonal marking as compared to more popular man marking. Remember the guy, Mauricio Pellegrino, the Argentine defender in Valencia. He is a BIG member in Rafa Benitez’s scheme of things. Rafa got him from Valencia. Hew as the first Argentine in Liverpool. He played a couple of games for Liverpool when Rafa moved in. Liverpool is a pretty hard team to score against. So was Valencia in early 2000. This guy is a key man behind the scene. And he is Argentine. He is a first team coach for Rafa and in process to obtain his Uefa degree.

This is the same reason I was very hopeful about Gabriel Paletta. He joined Liverpool at the same time when Pellegrino was starting to take the defensive duties from Rafa. Paletta blew a great career. May be he never had it in him.

I will always love any defensive minded players to go and play under Rafa or Mourinho. That will make them better for NT.

Can anyone please transelate this for me: con vos solo dios….what is the exact meaning in english? something about only God….?

Albo: Why isn’t Palacio playing tonight? Is he not even on the bench? He played some minutes in the last game, so I thought he would be a sub this game…

A slightly off-topic question. I dont follow Argentina as a national team much, but i looked over some recaps of games, and saw nothing about Crespo. The guy is very underrated player and i think he deserves a callup. A 4-3-3 with Crespo, Tevez, and Messi in the front i think would be pretty much unstoppable.
