Looking Ahead: Summer 2008

May 19th, 2008 | By: Christian | 30 Comments »

With the seasons in Europe over, the Champions League final this Wednesday, and the Copa Libertadores and Primera coming to a close, we can at last look ahead to the national team over the summer. With international friendles, World Cup Qualifiers, and the China Olympics, it’ll be a busy summer for the albiceleste.

So with that in mind, I want to ask everyone here how you want this blog to approach this massive summer. This space has always been dictated by those who come here to read or leave comments, and I want you to choose how best to use this site to follow the games.

So what would people prefer - more original content from the writers (there are three of us technically), or more along the lines of what we do now, essentially fewer posts with more space for discussion in the comments? Live-blogging? More discussion on the podcast?

I do have one person who will be attending the game in New York against the USMNT who will act as a correspondent and give his personal thoughts (yes, I ripped it off from Ives’ blog). I’m still hoping to be in San Diego in time for the friendly against Mexico, so if anyone plans on going please let me know. Also, a few of you have mentioned about your own personal Argentina sites and Facebook groups - please post URL’s so I can keep a list.

While I wait to hear from everyone, please check out my post on The Offside main page on the Copa Libertadores, where I try ever so subtlety to suggest that it beats the boring-ass Champions League any day of the week.

Chau.

Aguero has come in second, just behind Raul for the Trofeo di Stefano award for best player in La Liga 07/08.

Wow the summe rlooks full of Action an decisions. Of course you all knno wmy feelings on moving on and preparing for 2010 so pata has to go right now. I basically like the other decisions that basile is making with the exception of Lucho.

Zabaleta–DeMi–Colo–Heinze
—-Mascherano-
Messi—–Gago –Maxi-Aguero
— Lopez—-

You cant have Aguero on the bench he is now one of the best in the world.

Messi might get a free role if Basile gets enough time with the players.

I don’t like Pato either.
But I’m sure once the River finish the Clausura, Carrizo will get the call.
MaxiLopez, I’ve seen Cavenaghi playing way before you did, and I like him a lot.
You’re just gonna have to accept plurality of opinions.
And FYI, Insua is not even in the list, buddy.
So calm down a bit.

Dunga called Adriano.
Domenech called Patrick Vieira.
Nobody thinks the qualies are a “gimmy”

My final Serie A update for the year.

inter managed to squeak out a win and retain the championship. A year and a championship filled with controversial win after controversial win.

Now looking at the last few games from a south American point of view it was very disappointing. The S. Americans lacked the killer instinct to close the race down weeks ago. It took Zlatan to come onto the field with 30 minutes to play in order for them to secure the title. Somewhat frustrating when you think about all their s. American players.

MILAN? The question is still up in the air if uefa will risk not letting MILAN play champions league. The rating (money) would drop significantly.

Good news is if they do only have to concentrate on Serie A next year means the scudetto is a LOCK.

This year between defending champions league TITLE and putting the boots to boca to win the WORLD championship it obviously took to much out of them.

Regards,

ken to answer your question regarding messi.
right now i cant see him leave and to tell you the truth when i stop and think of it i just cant imagine him in an other dress right now.
i understand your concerns.

maxi lopez i totally agree with you about cavenaghi, he has “special” the “IT” factor written over him.something cruz, milito, figuroa… dont have.
cavenaghi is not a type of 9 like inzaghi or van nistlerooy,he is more of a total packige.he can shoot, creat, score, hold the ball, goes back to take the ball.but i agree with albo too he must prove himself still so his uppertuenity has arrived and i sure he wont dissapoint us.
for me he will be a must.he is pure talent.

i want to praise one player who deserves it.
he did go through hell, shock after schock and almost 2 years of absence because of injuries he come back with a bang.
i mean GONZALO RODRIGUEZ.
villarreal was fantastic this year but 1 thing they lacked in the first half of the season was defense.
in total they have conceded 40 goal,in the first 19 games villarreal have conceded 30 goals,at the 20th game gonzalo made the return as a late sub against valencia, after 2 or 3 games he won the starting place back, since them villarreal defense has become solid only conceding 10 goals in 19 games and are 5 or 6 games without conceding a goal in the last game.
yes he is still not at 100% and he has some bad games like sevilla,it is understadable.but the statistics dont lie,he is a leader and makes the whole team better and of course the defenders.
i only hope he stays injury free.
will he be a starter for us? yes of course,i only have the fear it is to early for him espacially against brazil.

concerning pato:basile gave a hint that his is going to be axed in the future.
i must defend him about this situation:goalkeeper.
after the copa just look who he selected as goalkeepers!
CARIZZO and USTARI-no PATO.
but carrizzo he had problems with his passport and didnt play a game almost 6 months.what should BASILE DO?
ustari he made a bad choice, was promised strating spot because PATO wanted to leave but Pato made a brilliant u-turn move for him and stayed at getafe(they wouldnt axe him he won the best keeper award),so he defeated his rival and carrizo handed him the spot and BASILE actually could only chose PATO because the other 2 didnt play, its simple.
he had no other choice.
ustari get out of there.he need playing time.

ALBO,
I don’t understand your post. Who said I was angry? I know Cavenaghi since his first years at River when French Sport+ channel were showing the games from Argentina.
Anyway, you would maybe behave differently if you were not a Boca fan. And I respect all opinions. I don’t know what you are talking about.

ALFIO,
I don’t think Basile is going to start him. They probably called him to be included in the group and participate. His career has been in danger 2 times and next season is going to be important for him.

Concerning the “Pato” problem that really seems to be endless (so many keyboards used for this!), I admit we “only” have young goalkeepers in Europe. But they are talented. They represent the future. We have Costanzo, Ustari, Romera, Lux who could have been tested in ALL the friendlies in Europe (and Franco?). Then, Carrizzo could have been started at least the last WC qualifying games in America. Pato can do mistakes, not Ustari.

Basile probably has a bit of pressure (Medias, Renova?), so he calls Abbondanzieri, “his” goalkeeper. From Boca.

For me, Lucho left out of the NT would be like leaving Messi out of the group. It’s a shame.

if bayern get their way and no release di’michilis i hope to see gonazalo take his place. it would be great oppurtunity for him to cement his place back with the national team. gonzalo along side garray for the olympics is a very solid partnership one with a lot of size and strength as well. i am also dissapointed with the exclusion of lucho, even though i am a big fan of jonas they both could have made the squad. but i really don’t know what lucho’s best position is. the last freindly he played on the left, but he is right footed. when he plays for porto he usually plays deep ont the right. so i am curious as to what his best position is. is he truly a right winger. however i do like the list otherwise. hope to see cavi start and the return of aimar someday soon.
