Looking Ahead: Egypt v Argentina

March 24th, 2008 | By: Christian | 34 Comments »

Argentina

I just finished wrapping up this week’s installment of The Offside Podcast which should be up on Wednesday, and we spent some time discussing this week’s upcoming international friendlies, including Argentina facing African champions, Egypt.

Perhaps I’m just too involved with my club team at the moment, but I can’t say that I’m all that excited about seeing this. There will be plenty of stars available for the albiceleste, and the match will be shown live on GOLTV Wednesday at 2PM ET so I’ll probably watch. But with the Copa Libertadores and Torneo Clausura in full swing, and the European leagues winding down, I have to say that my interest in this week of friendlies is minimal at best.

So my question to all of you is: Are you looking forward to this week’s game? And if so, is there a particular player/storyline that you are looking forward to seeing most? I suppose for me it would be seeing Fernando Cavenaghi and Sergio Agüero.

This will be a good test of Egypt. Whilst they do well with teams from their own continent, it is very different when your playing arguably the best team in the world in argentina.

On a side note whats happening with all the violence in the argentine league. Racing game got postponed with 13 minutes due to the crowd. I live in europe and been a admirer of argentine football and it is not good what the fans are doing. Does anyone know if Estudiantes LP will get the win as they were ahead 2-1 and Racing only had 8 players.

Thanks toddutah for that. eurosport news were showing the league table with Estudiantes LP 2 points behind, but that was with this result still waiting.

In case you dont reliaze it Egypt is a good team and will ahve thier top playrs in the game plus it is at home. This is a great test. They are the african cup champs that means better than Ivory coast, Ghana, cammeron, and Nigeria. I wonder if we were playing someone like sweden or columbia if there would not be more excitement here? Well guess what these guys are just as good.

Well it all depends if the midfield can click. I hate the defensive line. Can we get some young guns in there instead of the same old Heinze and Burdisso? Burdisso was AWFUL against Juventus.

Midfield - can’t do much I guess with Cambiasso injured - so there’s only Mascherano, Gago, Maxi Rodríguez, Lucho González - the remaining 4 midfield players. I guess for substitutions you can take Lucho or Maxi off and bring on Lavezzi but other than that not too many options here.

Forward line is where the wealth of options lie. If we do get a 2 goal advantage I’d like to see the pairing of Lisandro and Cavenaghi upfront, and Aguero playing right behind the 2 central strikers.

My prediction: 2 - 1 to Argentina, but I could be totally wrong since this is a STRONG Egypt team who are very resilient.

I concur that it is time to bring up the young guys on defense. That is my worry but some of them are injured right now. i think that since it is an away game the defensive structure is good but would love to see a second half sub of Lisandro for one of the midfielders and then move Aguero back. If we are really playing well maybe levezzi for maxi as he is coming back from injury.

Guys! Did it go across your mind that Mascherano got a red card so that he can play for Argentina and not worry about the game coming up over the weekend :), I am really sick, I am cursing why I got this thought in mind. He is such a professional.

BTW, a very rare moment when we will be able to watch a game of Argentina in US TV. Gol TV is showing it live. They (US TV) always show the Brazil games, specially FSC.

First of all Argentina is way better then Egypt, there best player doesn’t even play for Hamburg anymore.

If you look at the list of players Egypt none of them are B players most of them are C players.

Egyt is a C team while we are an A+ team.

Just compare thee list of players there is nothing to be worried about.

Main reason they beat these B teams are because some of there best players didn’t want to leave for this tournament while all the egyptian players join the squad.

Mascherano didn’t do that because this is a friendly its just a to get ready fo the Quailifiers. And if you what Mascherano says after the game it doesn’t add up at all.

Lucho will probably taking free kicks.

If this isn’t a goleda Egypt would be lucky.

Christian,

If your excitement is minimal for this friendly then maybe you should resign from you post. After all this is the whole point your the leader of this blog. THIS BLOG IS ABOUT THE NATIONAL TEAM OF ARGENTINA NOT THE CLUBS THAT ARE IN ARGENTINA. You should really leave because you have done nothing about the NT since you became head of this Blog. This Blog was at its all time high when Messay was in change and he sould come back.

Debasish I like your reason for masch getting sent off but the guy is a proper professional. i support liverpool and was impressed with the way he stuck up for torres who was getting kicked by the man utd players. The ref was a clown and has history of being stupid.

I cannot see Egypt getting a goal against Argentina to be honest. The only player they have is that Zidan who has never played against the top nations. Argentina will control posession and the tempo of the game.

TRUTH, or whatever your name is, I think you can have your own opinion, but I never said that I wasn’t going to write anything about the game, I just said that I frankly was not all that excited about it. I’m not going to stop having an opinion just because I post here. I just don’t think that this match will tell us much about the squad, anymore than England or the US or Brazil will tell us this week as well.

Also, since I “took over,” there hasn’t been much action going on in with the NT, which will of course pick up over summer with WCQ and friendlies in the US, one of which I plan on attending. Plus, I am not the “head” of anything; this space has always been run by the regular posters. As I’ve said before, my hope is to create debate. If you are not happy with what goes on here, you can always talk about what you want by leaving comments.

And in my defense, I have promoted this blog on the The Offside Podcast and will continue to do so.

Haha, now I’m worried I sound too whiny.

Thanks guys, and again, there will be more posts once the NT gets rolling in the summer, and yes, I will be watching the game tomorrow, so I’ll share my thoughts with everyone else.

AND NOW MILITO IS INJURED! Aaaaaaaaaaaah! Our players are dead, one after the other. Riquelme, Cambiasso, Messi, Milito. Boom, only in one single month.

GOLAZO,
Stay cool, this is only a friendly. What cares is how we behave tactically and collectively. Egypt may win. And I won’t be worried about that. It wouldn’t be a surprise. Mascherano and Zanetti are gonna be dead in the second half (watch them carefuly). What counts is how we face counter attacks, how we defend. With guys like Lucho or Maxi, it should be great.

TODDUTAH,
Lavezzi is a second forward. How would you defend with him? It’s not his role.

I still am worried of seeing Gago playing on a side of the diamond. He will always tend to go in the center because it’s not his role neither. Basile always use this “Milan” formation using Gago as an “Ambrosini”. Pfff…

ALBO,
Yes! I would love to see the rabbit going to Napoli. Maybe they will sell Lavezzi? Or bench him? Because there is already Zalayeta #9 there.

We should not rely too much on Requelme as he has a habit of choking in BIG matches. So this match is a very good test for the rest of the team to impress without him, Messi or Tevez. Since, you never know when a player gets injured, for eg. what if these three players get injured during world cup, we should have a capable squad to get the job done. In summary, the DEPTH of squad should work.

Perfect timing Alexa, the new episode just went live. We didn’t really talk much about the Argentina friendly, instead focusing more on yet another abandoned match in the league. Hopefully I’ll discuss my thoughts on next week’s show.
