Egypt v Argentina - Live
El albiceleste is in Cairo today, preparing for their friendly against current African champions Egypt, in a match you can watch live on GOLTV at 2PM ET, or delayed at 9PM ET.
I’ll be posting lineups and major incidents from the match throughout the day after the jump, so if you can’t watch the afternoon broadcast and want to avoid spoilers, make sure to check back tonight. I’ll post my thoughts on the game sometime later.
For all things Egypt, please visit the Egypt Blog.
FINAL SCORE Egypt 0 - 2 Argentina: A deserved victory for el albiceleste. Well it looks like it was a good night for Argentina. A huge thanks to Messay, Alexa, and everyone else for providing the great commentary. Remember to watch the replay tonight at 9PM ET. Can’t wait to watch.
85:00: GOOOOOL! Burdisso makes it 2-0 on a header.
Colloccini replaces a banged-up Demichelis.
66:00: GOOOOOL! Sergio Agüero grabs for the first goal of the evening.
59:00: Heinze gets Argentina’s first yellow of the game.
46:00: And we’re back. No substitutions yet for Argentina.
HALFTIME: We’re still goalless in Cairo. Let’s see what chances El Coco makes.
2:34: By all accounts Argentina are the stronger side, but they have to show anything for it. 15 minutes left of the first half.
2:25: On the bench for Argentina:
Ustari
Coloccini
Zabaleta
Lavezzi
López
Cavenaghi
Romero
2:23: Halfway through the first half and still 0-0.
2:15: Soccernet doesn’t seem to know how to tell time. To follow along online, AFA has a decent game tracker here.
2:10: Sorry for the delay, but here’s the starting XI off of the Federation website:
Abbondanzieri
Zanetti, Demichelis, Burdisso, Heinze
Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Gago, Luis González
Agüero, Cruz
2:04: And we’re underway.
12:35 PM: Still no word on Basile’s lineup yet. Cavenaghi’s thoughts on being chosen for the squad - “It isn’t easy being called up for Argentina, which has players in some of the biggest leagues in the world. Being here is already important. In the brief time we’re together, my hope is to perform as well as I can so the manager continues to keep me in mind. And should I be chosen to play, to make the most of the opportunity.” I have a feeling he won’t disappoint.

Man of the Match? Burdisso
Maybe he can play at this level if he is in the center? Biggest worry? Who are going ot be our wing defenders? We need some guys that can push up and cause the other team to worry.

Good work by Basile (since no one remembers the coach), starting with a 4-4-2 for a change, with the laterals pushing down the side lines.
Mascherano and Gago are starting to build a good partnership in the middle.
The first 20 minutes of the second half were the only weak moments for la albiceleste. But Basile made the right possitional changes and the team played the last half hour at high level again.
Lucho can play the enganche but there’s no comparing with Riquelme.
MaxiLopez you wanted to see a formation other that 4-3-1-2.
You got it ![]()

River beat Universidad Catolica de Chile 2-0 and stay at the top of their group, but their game leaves a lot to be desired.
Falcao and Abreu are starting to be a great pair of forwards.
Carrizo (I’ll say it again, sorry) is the best GK we have. Check him out.
Not that it makes any difference but the score should have been 2-1.
The Chileans scored a valid goal that was not allowed because of a bad offside call.
On a different note, try to catch the goal by Villa (Spain) to Italy.
A one in a million volley on the angle.

Hi guys.
My internet connection broke down the day before the game….so I was not able to see the game as I was planning to. That made me mad like hell of course, but that is a different story…..I understand from what I read that Argentina did not play a very good game….nice to get a win as always…and an away win against the reigning african champions is a good result. But I really can’t understand why Basile started with Cruz(!). He is a good forward, but he is old and will not make the wc team anyway. Why not start Cavenaghi who has a future??…strange choice! So happy that Aguero scored! He must be a starter from now on. Tevez is just not Aguero’s class, and should be a sub in this team. Burdisso….I don’t care if he scored a great goal….he is mediocre, and is not a player who should be in this team. Same goes for Coloccini, Gabriel Milito, Heinze….they are just not good enough. So we have a big problem in defence, the way I see it. Demichelis is good. Zanetti is not a great defender, but fanatastic going forward….so we need really good defenders. I hope Garay and Gonzalo can be the key men in the future. Gabriel Milito is not the man to trust. Never. He is a big risk. We need really top class defenders, and we don’t have many of them at the moment.
Lucho…is always good in Portugal, but almost never really good with the national team….so I really can’t understand why he is given chance after chance after chance…I really liked that they had to cope without Roman for once. In my opinion Basile gives way too much responsibility to Roman, and we need to find other ways to break down oponents when Roman has a day off(wich he often has in really big games). The game against Brazil last summer is a good example…Roman did not have his best game, and suddenly everything went bad. He took hundreds of free kicks the same way, but they almost never created danger. We need to have a plan B. This is Coco’s biggest problem. He has one idea in his mind how to play football and if we find it hard to break down a defence….everyone gives the ball to Roman…..this is making us vulnerable and easy to predict. We need a plan B…I don’t like that Roman is gonna play in the olympics…that would have been a great chance for upcoming playmakers to be given a chance to shine…in stead he gives the responibility to Roman…..Coco is a weird man.

Roman is given responsibility because he is usually able to carry it. In fact I dont think there is any other player in the world who plays the game as responsibly as he does. Yes in all the games played as a classical enganche he is expected to have a few bad games - but I would rate him for all his good games. I agree about his bad freekicks in the game against Brazil but disagree that he had a bad day because of himself - he was fouled out of the game by the Brazil and the referee failed to protect him. Roman is the fulcrum till the next world-cup so I think he should play the Olympics too.
> wich he often has in really big games
Can you back this up please? Which games? This whole myth was perpetrated by the British soccer tabloids after the missed penalty against Arsenal.

Rune, maybe you’re still upset but Argentina played a very good game, except for the first 15-20 minutes of the second half.
Your post sounds confusing to me or may be I didn’t understand you well.
I think there’s nothing wrong with Basile, considering:
1. There was zero time to prepare the lineup.
2. Basile couldn’t call players from Argentina because their teams are playing twice a week.
3. We were without Messi, Riquelme, Cambiasso and Tevez.
4. We played the double champions of Africa in their house.
5. Basile tried a 4-4-2 formation first and then a double 5 which worked for the first time since WC06.
You say Basile is a weird man, can you be more specific?

The only thing that I’m not sure abouut Basile is that he started Crus over Cavenaghi.
Gabi Milito is like an Ayala fo taking the ball away and is also good at headers but when it comes to passes there both not so good. But still needs to play for the NT.
Burdisso is a good defender and he can play anywhere in the backline and that is why Argentina needs him.
Coloccini got a hell of a lot better since the 06 wc and the friendly against Brazil. He is still pretty young for a defender. He is even inked to Barcelona so he must of improved.
Passing judgement on Heinze now is a bit premature he just came back from injury and he plays for a new team ever since he got that injury for playing at Manchester he has never been the same. After until next season when heinze gets a real break.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO JAVIER PINOLA?????
Having Aguero and Messi leading the attack is a isn’t a good idea. It never worked having to shot guys up top and it will probabl never will.
If lopez goes to a team like a Chelsea or a Valencia he will be a huge star.
Lucho needs to leave Portugal and either play for a tea in Spain for Italy.
Cavenaghi should stay in France if they make the CL next year.
I don’t want Roman playing in bejing because Valeri can play his position and he can play it really well. He is only 21 and he can show the world he is at Roman level and he is.
Carrizo will take the starting role when he finally plays for Lazio.
HOW IS JOSE SOSA DOING AT BAYREN MUNICH???
Jose Sosa is truely one of the best free kick takers in the world even bettr then Roman.
He needs to be in Bejing no matter if he doesn’t plays for bayren.
Tevez is a really smart player probably the smartest forwrd he have. That is why he needs to be a starter for the NT.
Basile is good it is just he needs to start thinking of 2010.
Franco Di Stano scored for the Reserves that makes it 3 goals and 3 games.

Romario and Bebeto aren’t much taller than Messi, Aguero or Tevez, while they lead Brazil to the world champion, so shall we have faith for our “little” forwards.

OK guys let me get on my sopabox. Basile should play the best 11 as a unit. What i get tired of is everyone saying this guy has to start and they say it about 4 or 5 guys that all play the same postion. If tevez starts then Aguero cant start. Also it is not fair to say that even if messi and Ageuro and tevez are the best plyers that somehow a taller but not as talented player should start in front of them because there is only room for one short skilled guy. This is where basile has to try different things. How many games has he started Aguero and Messi together? I rememember one is all. I still would love to see on the national level Messi playing back becuase of the over supply of forwars that we have. Here is my lineup.
Utsari
Zanetti Demichilis Garay Heinze
Mashcerano
Messi Roman Maxi
Aguero
Cavenaggi
Other teams would fear this line up and have to adjust their strategy. We hae to have more than just one or two players that are a threat to score.

toddutah, that lineup is so offensive its great. Its like Messi taking Aimar’s spot.

Messi in that position should have to play defence on the midfielders too, and that is a “waste” of Messi.

I dont think it is a waste at all On Barcelona he is always getting back to help and if that allows us to play to more forwards then it is worth it on the national team level. Plus teams can not just mark him and Roman out of the game if they have to worry about Aguero and Cavenaggi upfront. I am tired of basile playing two or three offensive players and the rest defense of defensive mids. No wonder some of the better teams can shut us down sometimes. How would they mark a team with Messi and roman as midfielders and flanked by maxi? With still Aguero and cavenaggi ahead of them? Now we make them play to defend us instead of us leaving some of our best players on the bench so that Basile feels comfortable that roman wont have to run?

in the end it was a good game for arg. even though the game was a bit dull the won against a formidable opponent in their house. arg dominated most of the possesion and i was pleased with the players performances. egypt only threatened with zidan who impressed me alot. aguero was awsome, could have scored a second, but oh well. i only wish basile could have brought in the subs earlier. btw is de’michilis ok.

The U.S. soccer team completed plans Thursday to play Argentina in an exhibition game June 8 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

I notice some of our bloggers feel pretty irritated with Basile for what I read.
I believe we lost to Brazil in Copa America because our players chocked when they so the yellow jersey.
Yes, chocked, like it has happened before.
I’m not saying that it happens every time we play Brazil.
I saw Argentina beating Brazil 3-1 and in that oportunity it was the Brazilans who couldn’t get their game going and looked scared to death.
In the last Copa America finals against Brazil, it was our players who lost the game, not Basile.
Same in WC06 against Germany. It was our players not Peckerman.

Oh yeah and Golazo Batista (not Basile) is a big fan of the 4-1-2-3. He played Banega behind and Sosa next to Roman in that friendly against Guatemala.
I think that someone like Valeri can learn ALOT from playing with Roman, which I think will be great for the future. Just imagine the passing lanes that will open up.

Ok, just to answer…
Maradona:
I like Roman very much, but my point is that we need a backup plan for the games when Roman plays badly or finds it hard to create. I do not like that we are a team who are too dependent on Roman. If the opponents shut down Roman, we are in big troubble….If they manage to take Roman out of the game, they know that Argentina are not half as good. That is my point. We are very vulnerable here. We need a plan B.
I said that Roman has “off days” in real big games….The biggest club games he has played in his career are the two leg semi finals against Arsenal in CL 05/06….What did he do in these games? Very little. Against Inter he was great, but in the following round when thet mey a real top class team from England, he failed to deliver the goods.. And in the biggest game for Argentina..in the quarterfinal against Germany in WC 06…apart from that corner…what did he do? Very little. I think Peker was wrong to sub him, but he did not have a very good game. He was good against the mediocre teams, but not very good against the only real top class team that we met in this WC. And against Brazil in the Copa final…he did not do much…partly because the Brazilians kicked him out of the game, but one good question is: Why the hell did Coco let him take every single free kick when he didn’t create danger with them?? Again…where was plan B? I know he was awesome in the Copa Libertadores last year…And I am happy he was. But that tournament does not hold the same level as the CL in Europe. He was terrific in the Copa America…against the mediocre teams…but when we met a top class team, he didn’t have his best game. So again…my only point is that Roman is not Superman, and we need to find other ways to create danger in the real big games against real top class teams.
Albo:
I said Basile is a weird man based on the fact that he choose Cruz over Cavenaghi and always gives Lucho another chance…I said it just to sum up my post…..I also have to admit that I said it because Basile has picked Roman for the olympics, before I suddenly remembered that it is of course Batista, not Basile who is the olympic coach. Sorry…my bad.
I read on the Mundo Albiceleste web page that Argentina did not play a good game, but maybe the writer there was a bit too negative. So I should maybe have read all the posts here before jumping to conclusions. I am very happy that we played a good game after all.

i hope basile rest most of his regular starters for the next friendly against america. since its just days before a crucial game against brazil. i would definately like to see lopez and cavinaghi start this one and sosa pulling the strings in the midfield.

Boca Juniors came back twice to beat Colo-Colo at La Bombonera 4-3, playing the whole second half with 10 men (Monzon sent off).
The game was not technically good at all but showed the world the guts of Boca players who refuse to go down in their own house.
Rodrigo Palacio belongs with the best floating forwards we have.

Big weekend lets see if Aguero can give Riquleme some revenge against Villareal.

Trezeguet urges Juventus to buy Argentine
tribalfootball.com - March 28, 2008
David Trezeguet wants Juventus to buy Argentine in the summer.
The Argentine-born France international striker told Tuttosport that Lanus pair Agustin Daniel Pelletieri and Diego Valeri, Estudiantes attacker Pablo Piatti and River Plate starlet Diego Buonanotte should all be signed by Juve.
Trezeguet said: “They are all players of genuine class, my friends speak very well of them. And enough with the reports that they’re too young. In recent years two lads have exploded on the world scene called Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.
“Argentina is a great source of talent

johnlin, the gull! how can you compare romario or bebeto with messi, aguero and teves? I mean, bebeto is in their league but the three argentinians would fall short of a romario!! time to get down to earth.
