Diego Names His Squad For Scotland Friendly

Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona today released his list of 20 players to be called up for the November 19th friendly against Scotland, his first official act since becoming head coach.

At a press conference this afternoon, el Diez, standing between Carlos Bilardo and Julio Grondona, sounded quite confident in his selection, saying of the upcoming match against the Scots, “there are no friendlies, rather international dates where the prestige of the nation will be defended.”

When asked about what his expectations of the other men who will make up his coaching staff, he boasted, “Absolute loyalty. Iron strong. That they be ready to work and take orders from the number one head: me.”

One notable absence from the list below is Lionel Messi, who will not participate in the friendly as part of an earlier agreement between AFA and FC Barcelona.

Keepers: Juan Pablo Carrizo, Sergio Romero

Defenders: Nicolás Burdisso, Fabricio Coloccini, Martín Demichelis, Daniel Díaz, Gabriel Heinze, Javier Zanetti

Midfielders: Ángel Di María, Fernando Gago, Luis González, Jonás Gutiérrez, Javier Mascherano, Maximiliano Rodríguez, José Sosa

Forwards: Sergio Agüero, Germán Denis, Lisandro López, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Carlos Tévez

Your thoughts on the list? Excited? Disappointed?

Actually there should be a call up of 2 #9s to give them chances.
But personally I am not convinced with Diego Milito’s tries-to-goal ratio while in Zaragoza he used to miss a lot of sitters. It was amazing how much chances were created from him by D’alessandro and Aimar but he was only able to poke in 1 out of 10-12. For NT this ratio will not be good. He is ok for a 4-4-2 but with NT , I doubt it.
I did not watch the complete Genoa match, so may be he improved in this aspect of his game.

Unlike Higuain, our excellent #9s who are Cavenaghi, Denis, Lopez, Milito have ALL been performing very well for more than one year now.

We need a #9, who can score headers, someone who is almost always in the box when we have the possession and who could conclude the passing work of our team.

If there is one guy who really deserves to be tested 90 minutes, more than anyone else, it has to be Lisandro Lopez. He is better in the air than the other strikers we have.

In my opinion, Denis and Lopez are the solutions to be tested in priority. They should be given a friendly or qualifying game each.

Concerning Cavenaghi, one thing is sure, give him 90 minutes in front of Messi or Riquelme, and he’ll score. All he has in his brain is the nets. He doesn’t know what “pressure” means. The competition with his teamates is so high that his weak point is the league where he plays. He is the same kind of player than Trezeguet & Crespo. He scores, wherever he plays.

Diego Milito is efficient, even with the NT. I remember he missed a huge opportunity at la Copa and still managed to score minutes later. Technically, he’s less skilled than the other #9 candidates. This is important for me. Milito isn’t nice to watch. But his stats are there to prove that he’s excellent.

Then there is the tank, powerful Denis who is a treat for the opponent’s defence. He can “push” the opponent to their box and create spaces for the midfielders simply because of his physical strenght.

I believe a solution could have been to select 2 strikers in the group and use them differently regarding our opponent. For example, maybe use Denis against Germany and Cavenaghi against Spain. A coach like Batistuta could have been hired and work with them.

For me, for the next games, priority to:

1) Lopez, Denis
2) Cavenaghi
3) Milito, Higuain

Zarate isn’t a #9. He’s a monster though. Tevez should be careful.
One of today’s most elegant player, Palacio, might waste his international career because of his lack of ambition. He must go in Europe.

Maradona should expect to work with this kind of group until WC:

Carrizo, Romero,
De Michelis, Gonzalo, Garay, Coloccini, Pareja, Burdisso,
Mascherano, Cambiasso, Gago, Lucho
Maxi Rodriguez, Di Maria, Zabaleta
Riquelme, Aimar
Messi, Tevez, Lavezzi, Aguero
Denis, Cavenaghi

Aimar… Aimar I dont know when he will be back in the NT fold.
I remember in some match(well this I dont remember which one) when he was quite young the whole stadium was singing ‘pablito aimar, pablito aimar’ it was a treat that time to watch him.
I hope he is back in the NT, with Macherano , Gago balance, the Aimar touch will create a magic to watch.
Imagine a midfield with
Maxi-Macherano-Aimar-Gago/Lucho-Messi
Its My selection since
Maxi in my opinion is a player who keeps the team in balance (similar like Mache)
Gago/Lucho can keep the game ticking
Aimar with freedom to create
Messi (still not my favoured player, his solo runs should get reduced )connects well with Aimar
Well there is no harm to dream .:-)

Juventus must move quickly to land Racing Club attacker Franco Zuculini.

Tuttosport says Juve have made contact with the Argentine club about a price for Zuculini and been quoted £6 million.

Udinese have already had a £2.5 million offer thrown out by Racing, but are expected to try again.

I knew this week was going to be entertaining (to call it something nice) at AFA.

This just in from Infobae
Diego Maradona met with Julio Grondona at AFA’s offices on Viamonte Street.
They talked for a long while.
It was reported that Maradona insisted that he wants Oscar Ruggeri to be his assistant coach and Don Grondona said that was impossible.
Diego tried to explain his reasons for this important decision, yet Grondona said “No can do”.
Upset Diego left the premises but before leaving he told Don Julio:
“You better hire “El Cabezón” (Ruggeri) or else I quit”.

Haha Wow. You know as MaxiLopez has said many times - Maradona will not bow down to anyone. More drama unfolds. Wonder what Grondona’s response will be - or will it just be seen as an empty threat?

AJ,
Bianchi, Pekerman and Menotti didn’t bow down to anyone either.
As soon as they didn’t like it anymore, they quit.

@Rune: Congratulations. All the best to you and your family.

From Clarin (and Ole): When pressed by the media (over and over) for his reasons as to why he didn’t want Ruggeri to be part of the NT, a very frustrated Grondona said, “Because I don’t like his face”. Vintage Don Julio.

Good to see players from the Italian Serie A in the called up list. I am sure Napoli players German Denis, Navarro and Ezequiel Lavezzi will give their best to represent Argentina as well as the Inter players Nicolas Burdisso and Javier Zanetti and Lazio goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo.

Strange on why Zanetti is not the captain anymore….
