Diego Names His 20-Man Squad For France Friendly, and Argentina Face Ecuador in S.A. Under-20 Championship
Diego Maradona today released the names of 20 players who will take part in the upcoming February 11th friendly against France in Marseille.
While many of the names come as no surprise (Mascherano, Messi, Agüero), the selection of Walter Samuel certainly is, with the former Boca Juniors player making his first appearance with the national team since September of 2006.
The list does not include players currently playing in Argentina such as Juan Román Riquelme and Juan Sebastián Verón, who could be called in this week, though they would have to miss the start of the Clausura season which begins February 6th.
In other news, the Argentina Under-20 squad will face Ecuador tonight in the South America Under-20 Championship. They will need at least a draw to qualify for the final hexagonal group stage if they are to advance to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt. I’ve provided a link below, which should be at 6PM ET/3PM PT.
Full List For France Friendly:
Goalkeepers: Juan Pablo Carrizo (Lazio), Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar)
Defenders: Javier Zanetti (Inter Milan), Martin Demichelis (Bayern Munich), Gabriel Heinze (Real Madrid), Daniel Díaz (Getafe), Nicolás Burdisso (Inter Milan), Walter Samuel (Inter Milan)
Midfielders: Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), Fernando Gago (Real Madrid), Maximiliano Rodríguez (Atlético Madrid), Jonás Gutiérrez (Newcastle), Luis González (Porto), Ángel Di María (Benfica)
Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona de España), Sergio Agüero (Atlético de Madrid de España), Carlos Tevez (Manchester United de Inglaterra), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli de Italia), Lisandro López (Porto de Portugal), Germán Denis (Napoli de Italia)

Were Riquelme and Veron formally announced to be included in the friendly for France? I haven’t seen anything about it yet. I don’t think Veron needs to get a chance. However I think maybe Ibagaza can be given a run.

I don’t understand all you guys with Insua: he’ll be nowhere near ready for 2010, he’s not that much of a prodigy. From what I’ve seen, he’s acceptable: but he plays for a team (irregularly) that is built around a defensive system (Liverpool) unlike Real Madrid (Heinze) and Newcastle (Coloccini)and he’s yet to play a full season anywhere. That’s not to say he won’t be good for 2014 or 2018 (even Copa 2011) but let’s not get carried away. A player everyone has ignored in that position is Leandro Grimi at Sporting lisbon: he’s a good age (25 in 2010), plays for a competitive club but I guess it would take a sustained effort from now till South Africa to get him ready, which is unlikely to happen. Not that he’s that much of a prodigy either, but he’s tidy I tell ya. Like some of you say, 3 at the back seems the solution.
Regarding Heinze: he’s the type of player that will always appeal to Maradona: he makes bold claims, holds his head up and beats his chest. ‘Huevos’ as they say, despite the fact that age and injury have taken his best form. Not that I’d have him in the squad but…
As for Carizzo: this upsets me. I hate it when players get singled out, especially Argentine ones. It’s all part of the snow globe that is football: everything repeating itself over and over. Every mistake comes down to one player, every goal is one player’s fault. So lazio ship Carizzo, let’s say, and bring in another goalkeeper, he’ll make a mistake and then that will be his fault. Constantly blame the screws and not the machine (if that makes sense) It was like when Samuel was at Real or Coloccini now: no one player can defend for a whole team: a team with a bad defence buys one big name defender and expects the whole team’s defence to be instantly changed: if the rest of the team can’t defend then of course that player will be dragged out of postion from time to time etc. So Newcastle will get rid of Coloccini: a snow globe, I tell you….
As for Cufre and Scaloni: they were in the team to round out the 23. If you’re with players for 6 or 7 weeks or whatever it is in a World Cup, the squad players need to be capable but more importantly know their role and not complain about not playing, not dividing the dressing room. This is something Maradona needs to be wary of if he intends a bench of the likes of Veron, Zanetti etc. They’re no doubt nice guys but they won’t like being on the bench.

Maxi i love your line up
. Somehow I knew my out of the box idea would not sit well with you but this is a blog and I certaily dont want to have to edit my own thoughts however outrages they can be at times
. I am not saying that we have horrible defenders only that the left side is our weakenss. Heinze would start for many national teams but he should not be penciled in as the starter for us. The reason many are excited about Insua is that he has talent and fits a need that the NT has. For many of the other younger players however good they might be there are already better players a head of them that are fine at the NT level. ie Higuain Zarate. I have very high hopes for Insua because if he can secure a place as the starter at Liverpool that says a lot. Anyone else notice that Liverpool were playing so well and then a certain left back was released for the U 20 south american chmpionships? To me Insua is fast and skilled and if he can gain good experince this season stands and outside chance to at least be on the team for 2010. Once again I state that I have a lot fo confidence in carrizzo. He is a good and solid keeper and should be the starter at this point. The more he can play for the NT the better.

By the way Maxi if you play a 3 5 2 one o fthe midfeilders ofter slides back to play defender when we are under attack that player will ofter be gago or mascherano so if it makes you feel better if I list the line up like this I will do so :
———–carrizo————
Zanetti Demichillis Samuel
————Gago———Mascerano
Maxi——-Messi———DiMaria—
Lopez Aguero

FELIPE,
I agree at 200%.

LOL LOL LOL!!
Antoine:
Coloccini is not reliable as a keeper either….would not trust him to carry fruits.:-) I would go for Cambiasso in goal. That way poor Cambiasso can get to play.
——–Cambiasso
Zanetti-Ayala-Pasarella-Sorin
——–Gago-Mascerano
Maxi—————Di Maria
——–Messi
———Cavenaghi

I am terribly sorry that I forgot one of the “s”’s in Passarella.

…and also a “h” in Mascherano. I will go to sleep now.
Mascerano as a left back…hahahahaha….my God, that was a good one. It really made me laugh.

Felipe,
Good post overall. I am actually not in a very serious mood today
, but will try to pass on my message. I agree with you – “no one cannot defend for entire team”, however, there is a flip side too. There is one who makes a blunder and lets the whole team down. Both are true. Have you seen Bayern vs Getafe game from last year’s Uefa cup? Would you really say, the last goals are a collective failure of Getafe? When an anonymous Stoke forward is escorted to the goal by Coloccini as a CD, would you really say it is a collective fault of Newcastle United. Nah!!!
Good to know about Grimi. I tried to follow him during the CL games.

Yeah, thanks Maxi and Debasish. Actually, those mistakes were going through my mind, Debasish: you’re right, sometimes the players make mistakes and you think what the…? But you can see it coming: I knew what would happen in the case of Coloccini and Newcastle (and going back Samuel at Real) but it’s curious how they make such mistakes there but didn’t at other clubs: Colo at Deportivo and Samuel at Roma. Why is this? And it can’t be because they are not good enough because there are plenty of players at those clubs and toher clubs who are ‘good enough’ at their clubs but who wouldn’t ‘make it’ in the Argentina national team or in various other clubs.

I put Coloccini as a goalkeeper because like that, you guys will be able to spit more on him. It has already started. One day, some here will blame him for the 11th of september.
My lineup is ironic. But also pathetic. The fact that Mascherano is thought by some here to be our leftback is quite scaring.
I miss the old AURELIUS, ALEXA, ALFIO and co.
Sorry people I’m in a bad mood today and only retain negativity.
FELIPE, I agree at 300%.

look the fact is heinze is not the solution to our left back problems. i accept the fact that he has faults what i don’t like is his fiery behaveiour he can be too aggressive as well as to aguementative which can cost us dearly. i remeber the germany game he was arguing with odonka more that he was playing, now how can that help the team. the best bet is the 3-5-2 with a compact midfield. maybe something like this
carrizo
micho-burdisso-samuel
messi-veron-mache-gago-maxi
aguero-lopez

Go take a timeout MaxiLopez.

I never saw the Lazio game, so i have nothing to say about Carrizo, everyone has a bad game at some point, even quality players, but the point is you know how they can perform, just because someone goes through a bad patch doesn’t mean that they’ll perform badly for the NT.
Funny post Maxi, i don’t know where Aurelius, Alfio or Alexa are, but i miss them too.

bardisimo dech henze
gago masco
maxi veron Jonás Gutiérrez
messi
aguro
above 3-5-2
or
peckerman type formation
burdis dech henze Jonás Gutiérrez(look sorin 2 think about it)
messi gago mascor demaria
tevez
aguro/milito
jonus can be a attacking wing back were as burdis acts more like a right stopper with messi covered by burdis and mascorano he is free to roam demario and jonus can attach and interlink but with more structure
i like my 4-4-1-1 even tho i hate 4-4-2 but it just seems to work webn argentina have a solid back 3

DAY1STAR,
Yes, it’s absolutely true. The problem is that Carrizo didn’t do any mistake (check the videos). You can see on the highlights that his defence was lost. But there is someone in lazio who has decided that he was THE only responsible and all the medias and people think god’s voice has spoken or something like that. It’s pathetic how people believe in medias in general and can’t have their own opinion. If I was Carrizo, I would have eaten my gloves.
KENNY boy is right, Milan are going to trash Lazio. I hope it tough.
AJ, advice taken. “I did my homework” like a friend said once.

Yeah, I am pretty sure there would be no war in Gaza if it wasn’t for Coloccini. He is to blame for everything:-)
And like someone above wrote, I also believe that Bardisimo and Dech should be among our defenders. LOL!
We are really having fun here! Or are we pathetic?
Can’t wait till the 11th of february. Finally something real important to talk about….

today’s game Arg v paraguay is at 21.30pm European time, 20.30pm UK time.
And i think that makes it 3.30pm US time? Am i right?
Here’s the links for the game:

And it’s on Goltv for anyone who has it.

Goltv is also on TVU player, so if anyone wants to install that you can do so from TVU networks.

Lavezzi has scored for Napoli they lead 2-0 in the first half.

Pre-season in Argentina is anything but.
What a pathetic way to prepare for the Clausura.
Boca-River, tomorrow in Mendoza.
Boca will play only kids to keep its stars on a lower level of training.
Riquelme and many other important players are not going to be even on the bench.
What is the purpose of pre-season? go figure.
Boca-River is about money and passion.
Even during pre-season? You bet !!!!
Than we all wonder why Riquelme doesn’t run during the second half.
It’s all wrong and they know it. But “it is River-Boca”, that’s their answer.
What a bunch of crap. Oh brother…

New thread for Paraguay game up now.

Any lineup with Heinze in it is a recipe for disaster. That guy belongs nowhere near the national team, unless he’s waterboy or something.
He is a monumental screwup and liability – lok at 2006 alone. He nearly cost us the match against Mexico, then was out of position against Germany. Then the way he played against Liverpool this past week….
Why isn’t Higuain getting a callup?
I’m glad Carrizo is getting experience. I think if they continue to play him, he will be a solid, though not spectacular, keeper come World Cup.
