Diego Maradona to Travel To England This Weekend in Preparation for Scotland Friendly
In his first act of business as head coach, Diego Maradona will travel to England this weekend to monitor the progress of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.
Not wanting to waste anytime getting started with his first-team selection, El Diez will fly to England tomorrow to see two of Argentina’s top stars, first visiting Tevez’s Manchester United when they host Hull City at Old Trafford, and then to London when Mascheranos’s Liverpool face Tottenham. While Maradona has said in the past that Mascherano is guaranteed a spot on the national team, the situation with Tevez is a little trickier, with el Apache seeing more time on the substitute bench after the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov this summer.
In other news, Maradona it seems will indeed manage the team for its November 19th friendly in Glasgow against Scotland. Diego expects a warm reception from the Scots, saying “I’m going to a country where they adore me because of the goal against the English. The English and the Scots get on horribly - serious bad blood. But now we are going to play a game against Scotland, where they are going to treat us well.”
If he hopes to receive a warm reception from disillusioned Argentina fans who are unsure about their newest head coach, let’s hope he can ease their fears by getting a victory.

What a team ALBO. Seeing this vertical double #5 makes me come back in 2006, love this. I hope Maradona is going to that!
But knowing Bilardo, it might be 5-3-2 when we defend. Anyway, I really hope you are right.

TODDUTAH,
Soon, you are going to say that Messi didn’t do it on purpose… ![]()

I like that line-up Albo, i know that Maradona is planning to visit Napoli soon to see the progress of both Lavezzi and Denis with an eye on the forthcoming friendlies.

Something really needs to be done about the level of refereeing especially in the matches where there are big teams playing, the amount of wrong decisions which go in their favour is not right.

Guys Gutierrez was awesome today against Villa, man this guy has some serious change of pace, you’ll know when you’ll see the second goal newcastle scored!! The Geordie’s love him and he’s quickly becoming their idol..Colocinni was solid at the back too, he’s growing and adapting very well to the very physical english game!! I think Gutierrez should be considered in the NT for sure..he surprised all of us against Brazil and he’s been a consistent performer at Newcastle lately since his return from injury!!
Apparently there is a rumour goin on that Cavenaghi is being wanted by Tottenham..could be a good move for him, gettin more play time in a better league as to where he is right now! Cruz will either move to Genoa or Sampdoria in January!!

ZANETTI,
If Cavenaghi has to move, he should go in Italy. Il calcio suits him perfectly.
It’s good for Coloccini. Just a matter of time to adapt in this very difficult league & inconsistent club.
I don’t know for Gutierrez, for me, he seemed so limited. I don’t know if he has an albiceleste future with Maradona who loves technical players. Tomorrow will be the answer.

Rumors from Italy.
Cambiasso is not called because he’s injured. It’s the end for Zanetti with the NT. Lavezzi & Diego Milito are in the group. Burdisso will start and partner Heinze & Micho.

Maradona has made public he wants to hire Oscar Ruggeri and Alejandro Mancusso as his assistants, at the same level as Batista and Brown.
Diego and Ruggeri have had a strong exchange of words more than once in their lifetime.
Oh dear…
And on top, we already have more “chiefs” than “indians” ![]()

I think I should put my 2 cents related to the ‘Hand of God’ incident (after I read the Tim Vickery column).
I have checked that goal’s replay hundreds or thousands of times in all speeds that can be imagined (strange but true same as WC2006 QF against Germany).
As a player myself this is my verdict.
1) Diego sees the ball in the air and goes for it , with all his determination
2) Ball’s flight is misjudged by him. The ball is higher that what he can reach at the position of jump. (When ever you reach for a header for high balls you need to leap, there is a natural reflex to outstretch the hand during this motion.
4) As a result hand gets in touch with the ball and it goes in.
5) He turns to refree (his expression says that he knew it will be blown for a hand ball) expecting a call for foul.
6) Only when he heared the refree award the goal did he ran to celebrate.
His part of cheating was not to come to refree and say ‘please rule out this goal, its not a goal , I did a handball. you dont have good eyes’
:-).
The statement of ‘Hand of God’ (I think that time he meant that was God’s will to let that happen he did not intend to) was enough fodder was British /English press and they continue to use it for culprit searching hungry audience (there is always a conspiracy for why England fail in any cup).
In the heat of the game where you play to score goals (first priority) and win, players dont think of anything else at that moment. And It also goes for English players. And if they do think other hundreds of thinks then I see the reason why they have a major issues in all competitions.
I would say to English press and one-eyed fans that ‘You deserved it’ whole match was dominated by Argentina and win can be seen as coming.
So yes he cheated… so what !!!

This is the list according to Olé:
Carrizo, Romero
Burdisso, De Michelis, Heinze, Coloccini, Monzon, Zabaleta
Mascherano, Gago, Maxi, Di Maria/Jonas
Tevez, Aguero, Lavezzi, Milito/Denis
Riquelme, Battaglia (if Boca is defeated)
Papa, Angeleri, Veron
I don’t understand why Veron (old) would called called instead of Lucho??
This may be not true but Olé is rarely wrong.

ALBO,
It’s a pure mess in AFA. Seems that Maradona wants to change his assistants now.

Of the domestic players all are acceptable barring Papa who is limited in technique.
Jonas can do a job.It may be ugly but he can do it and as such would be a good squad player to have.
Would have liked to see Noir & Buonanotte .Thanks for your opinion on Viatri,Albo. If he keeps progressing I would like to see him tested in the not too distant future.
Still no sign of my pet favourites Garay, Gonzalo or Cavegol. Thanks for your information on Fernando Maxi. I cannot fathom Blancs reasoning because clubs over the continent are aware he has returned to his River form, the form which had all the continental giants ie Inter , Real eyeing his services and for some bizarre reason he ended up at Spartak.
If its necessary he must move to somewhere Diegol can appreciate his abilities. Good to see Monzon in .He would bring pace and attacking threat (could soon be one of the best attacking FBs in the game) in a 3-5- with Zabby on the other side.
That back three if it persists with Heinze and Burdisso will be found out though. Long ball into the channel on the counter and we are done for.
Please bring in Angeleri if required as he is not any worse than those two or better still the two Gs.
If Masche refuses the captaincy its no big deal. Every player should be their captain on the pitch. They are seasoned professionals .They do not or should not require someone to be urgng them on or telling them what to do.
It should be merely a perfunctory title. In any case if Masche does not want it so be it it does not make him any less of a player. Gonzalo can lead , Dimi, Maxi Rodriguez understated but a firm liked character for instance or in time Gago.
I hope Diegol gets his wish and this is his own struggle to unseat Grondona’s power. Surely he won’t be refused ?
Saludos. ![]()

Watch_10, you’re 100% correct. The English deserved it, especially the media.

There is a football that happens on its own terms and there is a football that is documented. The perversion is that, at times, the football that is documented is more important than ‘real’ football. This speaks volumes about the power of the media who, on many occasions, instead of defending the truth defend economic interests.

(Valdanito, not me)

He is a real thinker Valdano and that paragraph rings true. At times football has become a circus and freakshow far divorced from what happens on the pitch and increasingly divorced from (certainly in Europe) the fans who turn up to watch each week.
As for the Hand of Dios in 86 watch any re-run of the 66 game QF Argentina v England. Rattin is sent off for nothing.
Ramsay merits a very low opinion in my mind referring to the Argentine players inc.Marzolini as animals. Animals ??
His own players were shocked even at the games end when they tried to exchange shirts this’manager’ came racing onto the pitch to stop the exchange.

New, brief CL thread up.

Watch_10…your argument about maradona stretching his hands to rise his higher seems logical but does not hold any water because Maradona stretches out just one of his hands(left hand) not his right hand. If he was really trying to go higher than he already was he would have outstretched both of his hands. See any photo of hand of god and you ‘ll see. i cannot fathom how you missed it with so many replays and all…
I don’t care if it was hand or whatever i still like that cheeky goal but lets not get carried away and make up stuff. And yes, English deserved it that’s true.. i always say that
