Basile Resigns as Head Coach, Miguel Angel Russo, Sergio Batista Named as Possible Successor

October 17th, 2008 | By: Christian | 43 Comments »

Following a 1-0 loss to Chile this past week in World Cup Qualifying, embattled boss Alfio Basile as resigned as head coach of Argentina. The decision, announced yesterday, came after a poor run of form from Argentina this year, posting a 1-1-4 record in CONMEBOL, good for only 3rd in the table, and a whopping 7 points behind current leaders Paraguay.

Basile’s 2nd stint as head coach had not gone as expected. After a successful stint at the helm of Boca Juniors, el Coco, who replaced Jose Pekerman after the 2006 World Cup, led the NT to the 2007 Copa America final, only to be humiliated by rivals Brazil in a 3-0 loss. After three straight wins in WCQ, the botom would begin to fall out after a 2-1 to Colombia last November, a wild match that famously saw Carlos Tevez sent off after 25 minutes. Since then, Basile has failed to turn the squad around, and yesterday’s announcement was only a metter of time, with Wednesday’s loss in Santiago sealing Basile’s fate.

According to Basile’s representative Norberto Recassens, the decision to step down was personal and not because of the players. Interestingly, AFA tried in vain yesterday to keep Basile on until December, but he declined.

With the search already underway for his successor, San Lorenzo’s Miguel Angel Russo appears now to be the front runner for the job, joining River Plate head coach Diego Simeone, Olympic head coach Sergio Batista, and, God help us, even Diego Maradona on the short list of candidates.

Who would you prefer take over the albiceleste? Has Batista earned it after taking his squad to the Olympic Final? Where do you think the team goes from here?

Intersting things ALFIO.

Surprisingly, I have become a Pekerman fan, you all know that. I agree concerning some mistakes he did. But don’t forget this tradition in Argentina futbol to fall asleep when we win. It’s always like that with offensive teams. Pekerman tried to correct it and failed. He has had his chance and waste it. But the question is who would deserve to get a chance regarding its skills?

The big problem is that no one has been really efficient in Europe as a coach. Even Bianchi has failed.

IF someone deserves the job because of his efficiency, it is Hector Cuper. But his personnality & vision of futbol are pretty negative. He is a great tatician though. I don’t think Grondona should exclude him at all. It is a solution.

Unlike Batista who seems to be a young Basile. He proved us this summer that:
- He didn’t use a #9 and that’s why we wasted many opportunities
- His team defended with ONLY 6 players which is non-sense in modern futbol(Monzon, Garay, Pareja, Zabaleta, Mascherano, Gago)! Maybe because Messi & Riquelme didn’t want to defend. Maybe because Batista didn’t want them to. In both case, Batista appears to be a Basile #2. We need someone who involves everybody to act like a unit, like Pekerman did.
- He uses 4-2-2-2 which is completely obsolet
- The consequences of the 3 points above could have thrown us out of the competition against Netherlands.

Concerning Maradona, he should not coach alone. He must be used as an assistant but he woud never accept. If i am granted that his defedning tactics would be good, I am for him at 200%.

Russo, in the muppet role, may be Grondona’s favorite.

On thing is sure, because he named a coach that failed and made Argentina futbol lose at east 2 years, GRONDONA SHOULD RESIGN. He won’t, he’s nothing less than a dictator.

Yeah Maradona would be a weird one (how many other national teams can say they have a recovering drug addict as their coach?) On the plus side, no player would ever put in less than 100% under his leadership, he would certainly do things his own way and is very defensive whenever people criticise his players. On the negative, he’s too explosive and emotional a person, has no real qualifications so we don’t know whether he’d be able to manage a team or not or if he knows about defnsive tactics etc.
I agree, it would be great for Pekerman to come back. These are still his players by and large and 2010 will be the last tournament of the Peker-Boys before the new blood of Garay, Buonanotte, Zarate take over. Yeah, he made a howler in the WC QF but I don’t think he’d make it again.
A foreign coach is just ridiculous. For starters, Argentines would never have it, secondly they don’t need one and thirdly no team above ‘developing nation’ status should be allowed a foreign national coach. Keep international football to one nation’s players and one nations ideas. So argentina win with a German or Dutch man’s tactics and philosophies…so what?
Russo is interesting as he is hard to call. He built Boca around Riquelme but then you would wouldn’t you? Especially in 2007 when he was playing great. He’s always had to adapt and has been successful at it. Coaching Argentina is being given the keys to a great land where he can pick of every type of player in every position. He seems likely to get it so it will be interesting.
Ideally, it would be given to the two most successful Argentine coaches of the last 15 years: Bianchi or Ramon Diaz but then as people have said that won’t happen because of their various problems with the AFA and such.

Maradona says he wants the job and Argentina in general tends to do what he says but I don’t think it would happen. AFA also didn’t rule out the possiblity of a forgien coach, if Roberto Mancini says he is interserted AFA will surely put him on the shortlist but having a foriegn coah is unlikey the two main candidates are Russo and Simeone.

Grondona’s decision & choice is going to be the most important for the next 2 years. It will define if we can win WC 2010. Tactics are so important. If you don’t defend well as a unit, it becomes impossible to win against the best teams. I told you, I’m traumatized about Basile. Will Russo or Batista defend 4-1-4-1, for example? I don’t think so.

FELIPE,
I think the only foreign coach that I would love to see coaching Argentina is Pellegrini (but will obviously respect his Villareal contract, will be free in 2010). He’s smart person like Wenger. They both have a clever & beautiful approach of the game.

But we said it, Pellegrini, Cuper, Bianchi, Diaz, Pekerman, Maradona are coaches that want to be free. They want to choose their players & have the total control of their team. Grondona won’t give them the team. He wants a Renova muppet that won’t complain to play in Australia 4 months before the competition. Are left only second zone coaches like Basile.

1) Pekerman & assistant Tocalli
2) Simeone & assitant Batistuta
3) Cuper & assistant Batistuta

I know I’m dreaming.

Maradona is too immature. He has just been hired by Moratti to work with Inter and is now applying for the NT coaching job. He isn’t professional. He could be used as a motivator assistant.

OH My God!!

It is 12.40 p.m. ET

I am watching ManU versus WEst Bromwich match and i just heard that Basile resigned.

Some of you guys ( I don’t know who exactly) said that he was praying that we lose so that Basile could be sacked.

Well, your prayers were answered by the Almighty. He’s resigned. I didn’t know it. I hope they give it to a guy who knows what he’s doing.

I’m sorry did I hear Klinsmann’s name being mentioned here. LOL, if you wish to name a top foreign coach, I’m sure my 6 year old bro could name someone better then that.

But I won’t waste my time trying to name someone from outside of Argentina because that is never going to happen.

However who ever is going to next coach, I have a message for him. Please make sure you call the right player and ensure that there is no premadonna in the team.

As for the strategy, I’ll leave that you just as long as our beloved team can bring home the glory that we all have waited since 1986.

John-
1. we dont need an “euro” coach we have enough “argy” head coaches way better than any “euro” head coach.
2. You dont understand, Argy players , and argentina WOULD NOT allowd a foreign coach as out Nat’l team coach. You simply have no idea of what you are talking about.

Ceratin player cant play.
Kun Aguero needs to leave. Put Iguain in his place
Heinze, needs to leave.
Midfield has to be Gutierrez, Mascherano, Gago, Maxi, Not sold on Dimaria yet
Defense is Demichelis..and anyone else with heart and balls, maybe Fazzio
Carriso is a hell of a goalie. Leo Franco as back up

well i am just as shocked as everyone that basile resigned. but i am not sure if i am happy about it. no i didn’t like some of tactics and definately didn’t like his player personel. but i was really pulling for him to change. i worried about this situation cause we had 3 quality coaches who resigned in the last 4 years. is this job to much, the gradonna (mafia) situation. i remeber at the end of the world cup every one wanted pekerman gone and after he left did we improve. we had some solid games at the copa and got destoyed in the end i am worried what if the same thing happens again and we don’t improve. will we have another coach that leaves us. how is the atmosphere amongst the players. there confidence must be low right now, for they have no clue what direction the team is going in. at least we have a 5 month break to get ourselves in some sort of order.

Kun does not need to leave snd he just needs someone to play off whether it be Forlan or Zarate.

Isolated he is half the player. Maxi you’re absolutely right the choice of coach & assistant is vital.

Yes once the players cross the whitewash its up to them but its the job of the coaches to get them feeling happy amongst themselves , feeling free to express themselves ,iron out difficulties.

To make sure they know their roles out on the pitch , to get them familiarised with different systems & to motivate them & instil confidence.

Tocalli should be in the mix as he is a father figure to all of the youngsters but after his disupute with the AFA unlikely sadly.

It seems a recurrent them in Argentina football that politics take precedence & as a result the team gets shot in the foot as a consequence.

Hence the absence of the two best candidtes Bianchi & Diaz. :(

Simeone & Batistuta ? Would Batigol take a second seat. No experience of coaching. If he could he should work with the strikers & get his nose behind the desk of a team like Simeone .Russo & Lombardi have done well with limited resources & deserve a chance.

2010 Pellegrini will be available. Will he be asked as a Chilean or honorary Argentine having served his time sucessfully with San Lorenzo, River & Villareal ? 2010 would be ideal for him.

Argentina does not need any foreign coaches as a global power in the game thanks .

However I think certain players like Mr.Cavenaghi,Mr.Higuain,Mr.Rodriguez will see this as a heaven sent oppurtunity to show their worth. Even Saviola . Leys hope they stay clear of injuries & impress with their respective clubs & force their way into the reckoning.

Chau amigos. :)

SND,
Many silly things are said on the blog. It has always been like that. Try to select and remember who the interesting people. Otherwise you’ll have headaches. Welcome to you btw!

AIMAR10,
Some fans hated Pekerman but in general, everyone wanted him to stay. I remember a survey on Olé. At least he had a very very clear direction for all of his players (even for Scaloni).

AURELIUS,
I don’t think Batigol would refuse a second coaching role because he’s unexperienced. And believe me, with this guy, be ready to see Cavenaghi & Denis have the chance they deserve. I believe Simeone & Batistuta is the best tandem available & correponding to AFA.
I say this but I don’t like the “Bielsa” football style. Unfortunately, the AFA offer won’t suit with the best Argentine coaches. It’s terrible.
And yes, Cavenaghi, Lopez, Saviola, LUCHO, Aimar, Gonzalo, Garay will have opportunities to show who they are.

Why wasn’t Carlitos in Man U’s squad yesterday? Not even on the bench….Is he injured? Rooney, Berbatov and Ronaldo all scored…:-(

Tevez’s future is uncertain Rune. Maybe he might move in January. A shock ?

Ferguson has his eyes on Costa a young striker from Gremio. There are several Brazilians in the squad inc.Possebon & young Rafael da Silva.

The club are even rumoured to be setting up a permanent base in Brazil to hoover up the best kids.

Argentina obviously is not good enough. Well we can stick with the Italian & Spanish giants thanks.

The fee for Costa is estimates (a ridiculous fee too at £20M) which would mean as a PLC the club could not finance a move for Carlitos. In my opinion Carlitos would be better off at a club like Aston Villa say where he would be the leading light not a supporting act to Berbatov ,Rooney & Ronaldo.

Or a move to say Napoli or Villareal if they could accomodate him & afford him.

It seems to me he is unappreciated at this club not by the fans but by the management.Plus Ronaldo’s ego & that of the chav Rooney.

Bastard ex FIFA Glazer & its sponsor AIG have financial difficulties because of the international crisis. MU won’t be abe to buy Tevez to another bastard, Kia who owns MSI, a futbol cancer company. Carlito could join Real Madrid.

Yes..Basile out.Happy2……….I think the best coach is Batista.Assistant Maradona/Batistuta but Luis Brown also gud.For me Maradona cannot become Argentina NT Coach coz if he take over i think they only play to strike and don’t have miedfield strategies and surely Maradona will pick his favourite players.Messi&Kun Aguero of course in his top eleven player.Batistuta? It’s to early for him to become Argentina NT coach but can put him to replace Batista in under 21 coach. We don’t need outsider coach like Mancini,Maurinhio or what ever. Now what happen with Saviola and Crespo.Very disappointed bcoz they didn’t play. Both of them should out from their current club and combind and find another club such as Valencia,West ham,New castle,As Roma, and another club. For world cup 2010 i love to see Ustari,Romero & Franco as a Argentinian goalkeeper.Others Collocini,Burdisso,Zabaleta,Heinze,Banega,Gago,D’Allesandro,Riquelme,Maxi Rodriguez,Mascherano,Angle Di Maria,Jonas Guitirez,Lucho Gonzalez.Striker Lautaro Acosta,Messi,Aguero,Lavezzi,Saviola & Palacio…I’m really exiting to see Argentina play with their new coach.

It is good to see Basile go…at the same time players like Heinze,Collocini,Pato,Cambiasso(he might be good at club level) etc should also leave..it doesn’t make sense to keep the same players who do not have any effect on the team. we should try to play attacking football and have good defense to back it. The new coach should have that in mind. Batista is not going to be great in the beginning but atleast the team would back him up to give him confidence and he would employ his tactics as it progresses…

I couldn’t watch the match b/w argentina and chile but when i saw it in news i was shocked bcoz before the match i post a comment that we will win easily. I was so disapointed that i told my self that i will never write a comment and i will not take any interest in football and will not watch the matches of argentina. But what happend? After all this is my alltime favorite team.
After 4 days of that match i came to knew that Basile had been resigned. It was also shocking and then i once again joined this blog.
What happend?was not good but we hav to look forward.I don’t know any thing about the coaches, I just know one thing that i love this team and i cannot bear to see this team in such a form. The only thing which i can do is to pray for my team.
