Argentina World Cup Blog, 2009 Edition
With 2009 already underway, the prospect of an exciting 12 months of football now lies before us. Even in the first two weeks of the new year, we are already seeing some of the biggest potential stories (Tevez’s potential move from Man. United, Messi’s brilliant performance against Atletico Madrid) already making news.
But before we completely shift our focus towards ‘09, let me take another opportunity to thank all of you again for making this site so successful. In looking at the traffic stats for the month of December, the Argentina blog was the second most popular site on the World Cup blog network, with nearly 9,000 total visitors. When you include Christmas and New Year’s, when traffic traditionally dips, that makes those numbers even more impressive.
In fact, the Argentina WCB has consistently finished in the top 5 most visited blogs on the site, with huge jumps in traffic during the qualifier against Brazil, the Olympics, and during the naming of Diego Maradona as NT coach.
What does that all mean? It means that Argentina, both on the national and club level, is as popular as ever, and that Argy players across South America, Europe, and even the U.S., are an integral part of the modern footballing world. Thus it seems that everyone out there has something to say, and thankfully for us, the WCB is for many the de-facto stop on the web to add to the discussion.
I realize this blog is far perfect, and over the past year there have been bumps along the way. The inactivity, the lack of posts (or in some cases, too many), the ever annoying trolls, and the occasional arguments that tend to get out of hand.
But I still see the same names who were here at the beginning of year still coming back every day, leaving comments, starting discussions, and making this site what it is. And I can’t express just how important their contribution is to this blog, and how we are all better off for it.
So whether you’re a daily visitor or the occasional reader, thank you again for your continued support. Let’s hope for a great year for your club, favorite player, and of course, the National team. And as promised, here’s my list of top moments from 2008, as well as some of yours as well. Enjoy.
*Best Game
The Olympic Final. The match against Brazil was arguably better and more exciting for obvious reasons, but it would have meant nothing without the gold.
* Worst or Most Disappointing Game
Take your pick – any of the 4 consecutive WCQ draws, or the 1-0 loss to Chile in October.
* Best Individual Performance
His red card in the United – Liverpool derby aside, I saw no better individual player over 2008 then Javier Mascherano.
* Best Goal
Sorry, you won’t be getting any objectivity from me here. Diego Buonanotte’s two goals in the Clausura final that gave River their 33rd league title.
* Breakout Player Award
Higuain, Di Maria, and Ricardo Noir a distant third
And for 2009:
*Predict What the Biggest Storyline Will Be
Without question, how will Maradona improve the national team through 8 rounds of qualifying. When will Tevez leave United? And can Messi stay healthy for the year to make his case for World Player of the year?
*Who Will Be the Next Big Player from Argentina
Again, Noir, though Buonanotte could be a revelation in Europe, assuming he isn’t a moron and goes to Qatar.
* Which Player Will Have the Most Impact
Messi no doubt, although if Tevez leaves United his absence will make a huge dent in United’s title hopes. Back in Argentina, Riquelme may be on his last legs with Boca, and rumors persist on Ariel Ortega’s return to River.
Here were some of yours:

I think that in 2008 Argentina didn’t merit any “best” tag in any field, except maybe their play during the olympic games and the excellent work of Javier Mascherano.

3-0 vs braazil, i wanted that one so bad

losing 2-0 to chile they beat us in every aspect of the game
* best individual performance
definately messi, though macherano is more consistant he has the help of gago or cambiasso in the midfield. messi is more individualistic.
* best goal angel
di-maria against nigeria it is the goal which one us the tournament in those extreme conditions.
* break out player
lavezzi

i have so say lavezzi this guy has so much potential, he is just a joy to watch, if he can only start winning some trophies.

macherano, maradonna has said he is the player who secured a spot, which leads me to believe he will play just about every game, therefore he will have the most impact.

*Best game for me:
Without a doubt has to be the 3-0 Argentina v Brazil game.
*Worst game for me:
All the matches that we lost in were bad but the Chile game was probably the worst, coz there were no excuses for losing.
*Best Individual Performance:
Hard to pick out one particular player.
*Best Goal:
Another one that’s really hard to pick, there were a lot of good goals scored in the past year. But the most vital was Di Maria’s against Nigeria, which got us Olympic gold.
*Breakout player award:
I think Di Maria, although Lavezzi has also been good.
*Biggest storyline will be:
The rise and rise of Messi, with Aguero following in his footsteps.
*Next big player from Argentina:
There are too many players who may become the next big thing to mention.
*Player who will have the most impact:
I have to say it’s a toss up between Messi and Aguero, it could be either of them.
Let’s just hope the next year is a good one for all our players, and Diego gets a lot of selection headaches.

Nice post Maxi.
Clarín has announced that Diego Maradona will send his list of players to AFA today, for the upcoming friendly against France.
He wants to have a group of (22) all kinds of players to chose from, and then decide who is in form to step on the pitch.
The list will be available during the day today in Buenos Aires and it will probably include Riquelme and Verón.
Saludos

The most important part of 4-3-3, in my opinion, is that our wingers would open up their fullbacks and keep them busy defending.
Their central defenders then, are going to have a hell of a time controlling the rest of our guys.

MaxiLopez, your example of 3-5-2 lineup, with Sorín, is a relative example because when Sorín stepped back to defend, the 3-5-2 would become our familiar 4-4-2 Diamond, which has been our typical formation for the last years.
Sorín and Zanetti are the type of players that make any formation relative to their possition.
They can play fullback or side midfielder according to the need of the team.

Yes ALBO and Juampi himself is probably going to explain this on Seba & John’s blog soon!
I can’t wait Maradona’s list. Papa or Angeleri, Veron, Riquelme, Lopez, Battaglia will be there for sure. I can’t wait to see Veron’s face when he’ll be on the bench in Marseille.

Zanetti—Micho—Heinze—Papa
gago mascorano
messi maxi
tevez
aguro
i hate 4-4-2 but this formation makes sense and is easily adapted 4-4-1-1 is my starting line up
messi free role/maxi winger with exchanging of sides for each player thru the game tevez also pulls in deep as messi joins aguro id even consider playing the newcastle winger guy as a left back his big strong fast and is very much a wing back in how he plays

Great post Maxi!
I remember seeing an hour long interview of Pekerman before the 2006 WC. There were pieces on the magnetic white board and the interviewer kept pushing the pieces in a 4-4-2 form and Pekerman kept moving the pieces back, especially the attacking pieces.
One of our problem has been able to score more than 1 goal in a game. Reason both creativity and finishing abilities. We have crowded ourselves in the middle trying to break through. With full backs going up and using the opposite footed wingers it opens up the field. E.g. Messi a left footed right winger and Maxi a right footed left winger (against Serbia) or Ronaldinho for Barcelona. Sorin has 2 lungs, so does Dani Alves.
Barcelona for example used the field to the fullest. I have read interview of John Terry as a Chelsea defender in CL, where he mentioned that the Barcelona field is too big (read wide). I wondered how that could be true. Due to the way the stadium is built they have good space in the sidelines (may be the field is also couple of yards wide, I am not sure on the rules). Point being Messi, Ronaldinho kept the ball inside the field, while he was on the line or outside. Terry mentioned about how far the defenders were stretched. A defender in a little more uncomfortable coming out 2 yards more than he normally does in a cramped up Chelsea football ground. Such minute things gets so interesting.
The thought tied me back to what Tim Vickery has to say about Riquelme. He says Riquelme is like a sculptor. He knocks small pieces from the stone to build a figure. During his first pass he draws out the defender a yard, ball back to Riquelme, his next pass draws another one out a little, by 4-5 passes and small triangles he has actually taken out a defender of his position by good 2-3 yards. He now stabs the opponent badly, his killer pass. Like Ledley King said after our 2-3 loss to England – “He took me to all over the place in the field”.
Point here is, no matter what system we play, key is to open up spaces. Get the opponent defender to a place where he should not be. Whether the Barcelona way or Riquelme, both are possible. The coach or manager should consider all scenarios and adapt appropriately. Clearly, Barcelona looks cramped up when they play in an English ground with almost the spectators sitting on the sidelines. Clearly, John Terry’s Chelsea was not comfortable covering extra 3 yards in Camp Nou.
I just hope we prepare for all. Be ready for all types of challenges. We have talent but somehow we are not putting it all together.

I am happy to see Walter Samuel back. I wanted it for a long time. He is just around 30. Though he very prone to yellow cards.
Rest of the team looks great. Looks like Lisandro Lopez will get a good run. Denis may get 15-20 mins, I would guess.
Now I am excited!!!

I really really like who he has called accept no Higuain I would ahve like to see Higuain get his chance against france.

I would have liked to see Higuain and Cavenaghi. But I don’t know how Maradona is going to test all these forwards. Denis hasn’t been starting regularly so I don’t why he’s up there. Lisandro has scored 5 goals in 15 games, don’t know why he’s up there. Higuain, Cavenaghi, Milito have all be ridiculously prolific especially Cavenaghi and Milito.

Not surprising to see Maradona calling Napoli players, even if they are excellent. There is some nervosity between Denis and his italian coach, so he is often used as Zalayeta’s sub.
Even with amazing stats in a league where teams are afraid to lose and defend with 10 men, Cavenaghi seems to have less credit than subs in top leagues. It’s a bit cruel for him. Does he need to leave his club in order to be more considered? It’s a bit stupid.
For Higuain, it’s different. There is no place for another second forward when you already have Messi, Aguero, Lavezzi in the team. The Higuain/Tevez debate is perfectly understandable. For 2 months, one has been an efficient starter, whereas the other has sat on the bench most of the time.
Gonzalo is injured. Coloccini isn’t performing well.
Maradona’s lists aren’t different than Basile’s ones. I think we might see the difference on the field.

y tevez???? no higuain??

Maradona has a soft spot for Tevez. I think if we see a game where Maradona starts with Messi – Riquelme – as attacking midfielders, and Aguero and #9 upfront I’ll be satisfied.

whatever john.
The squad list is alright, it’s a mistake to base a team around certain players, what do you do if that player gets injured, you’re in deep crap then, we need to have versatility. I know Maradona doesn’t have too much time, but he needs to instill a winners mentality in the players, no matter who is playing they need to play with each other for each other for Argentina.
It’s good he’s going to be at the game tonight, the u20 should be inspired in their game against Ecuador, we need to win.

here’s some more links for tonight’s game, it’s on in just under 2 hours:
