Argentina - Paraguay: The Aftermath

September 7th, 2008 | By: Brendan | 151 Comments »

I just want to apologize for not posting in a while, things have been pretty hectic, and I haven’t been able to devote as much time to this as I would have liked.

Now, let’s talk about the Olympics and Argentina v. Paraguay. First, of all, I’d just like to establish a few things:

1. Revenge is sweet, and it’s even better when it’s accompanied by tears of sadness and frustration from Ronaldinho and the rest of the Brazilians.

2. However, that loss means that Dunga might not make it to 2010, and the Brazilians might finally realize that Anderson is not a good player, (not to mention Alexandre Pato) which is not ideal for any Argie fan.

3. Paraguay is the luckiest team in football.

4. I’m not worried about any injury to Abbondanzieri, because, quite frankly, he’s not all that good, and if Argentina has survived since, well, ever without a good keeper, then they can settle for their second…or third choice. (To the person who contradicts me with an example of a quality Argie keeper: I hate you.)

5. Speaking of Pato, does anyone know why Ustari is playing as a backup in Getafe? Isn’t this the worse possible situation for us? Oscar is literally second choice to Roberto on every squad he plays for. When Pato goes out and parties it up, is Ustari his wingman?

6. It seems like there’s so much quality in the back four, and yet it’s consistently the weakest part, in my mind, of the squad.

7. Does anyone who’s not a dumbass Manchester supporter actually like Tevez? I mean, he’s a totally decent player, but I’d take Aguero over him any day…or Lavezzi…or Acosta…or anyone really… I think he needs to pull a Saviola and stop being good enough to be considered for the national team.

8. Di Maria - ha! Ronaldinho just missed a PK! - has definitely emerged as the great revelation of the Olympics and I think he’ll be extremely important in 2010.

9. Di Maria, Messi and Aguero is the trio of the future, not a lineup that contains Tevez, Crespo or Cruz.

10. I’m very, very worried about Riquelme in 2010. Despite Messi’s increasing role in the squad, Riquelme is still the spine of the Albicelestes and when he’s not functioning, everything breaks down. When Riquelme preforms, he does so brilliantly, but when he’s off (Copa America), he fails hard. My dream is that Riquelme plays beautifully in 2010 and after the Argies win, he’s voted player of the year, not so much because he’s better than Messi, but as a testament to all he’s accomplished in his career. However, everything could easily go horribly wrong.

Until Thursday,

Brendan

My side is doing the best that they can against Uruguay right now. I wonder why Uruguay games are never well attended.

Albo — you’re funny :)

Aurelius — I know this is off topic — but I studied in England a few years ago (at a wonderful school), and I LOVED England. I just despise the team, because of the way they play, but also because of their attitudes,
which is, as we say in Spanish, nefasto. But I miss England.

Anyway– Arg will play at 10:30, no? I always look forward to seeing these guys play. They just make me happy. Poets of the game.

Maxi don’t get carried away. In all of the games under Capellos charge they hae hardly been scintillating.

The one thing you have to do is cope with the physicality. The midfield is very poor in technique. France ran rings round it in their match prior to Euro2008 .

Yes physically its a tough looking backline but both the range of fullbacks are weak defensively. Th key is tot turn the backline & they are all ove tha plce. Drop into the holes infront of them &behind the midfield & tey will eb all over the shop.

Remember Roman in Geneva against Ferdinand & King ? Despite the fact King was tasked to neutralise Roman often using thuggery Roman ran the show & made that defence look what it actually is very ordinary.

There is no Baresi , Beckenbauer ,Marzolini or Scirea in this lineup.

Croatia did not match up physically & Bilic has amde a fatal flaw in not selecting some of the promising Croat youngsters ie Vukojevic & their lack of pace today esp.Corluka & Kovac was shown up badly.

Sad to say but all the low class papers will be singing the praises of these horrors & 2010 will be the year.

We’ll see. Meanwhile our Olympians (barring one drug cheat Ohorougou) will be conveniently forgotten.

Oh — and about Croatia– that team was a pretty exposed after the Euroes (where they really only played in one game against germany, and looked old and toothless in every other match) and overconfident coming into this game. They fell apart psychologically very early on, and started fouling and generally not playing with much thought. So Croatia was not a huge test in terms of football.

England play well as underdogs. Basically, England is nowhere near as bad as people say, and nowhere near as good as the English media say. They are sturdy, capable of a few big moments, and technically limited. Capello will help that. But, in all honestly, I think that he took this job for the money. Just the money. He was not that successful with Real Madrid (they won the league when the players stopped listening to him and took the rein in their own hands). I mean to say — I think that he’s a tad over the hill.

Who knows.

Alexa I know what you mean.

Sadlt there is a deep malaise in this country & social unease. There is a great deal to be proud of but most people seem to be ignorant about it & adore celebrity worship & generally removing their brains after they get out of bed in the morning.

There is this dichotomy being English and supporting Argentina but the passion & pride is something else & if you love beauty in the world , & aesthetics then you have to support Argentina.

I am sorry about 1982 when innocent young men on both sides died at the behest of politicians. Personally both nations should have dual sovereignty & access to the natural resources of the area(which need to be managed carefully to avoid environmental damage).

Anyway back to the match .Lets hope Messi doesn;t get the treatmet & if he does this referee will take action .

I really hope Basile make a drastic change tonight.

1. Start with Denis and Aguero upfront.
2. Messi and Riquelme behind them.
3. Gago slightly ahead of Battaglia with Zanetti on the right as a midfielder.

daystar is 0330 kickoff time ? Just one mild note of result in European qualifying. Finland held Germany to a 3-3 draw. Otherwise pretty tight games & a disappointing draw for the Czechs in Northern Ireland.

Denmark won 3-2, they were 1-0 down at halftime, that’s all i know.

By the way, Walcott says we were brilliant. My response:- only after you were playing agaist 10 men. Lubos Michel refereed the game, should bring back memories.

Well it seems that Milan lost 2-0 playing a friendly against Lugano.

Only 4 hours and 35 minutes to go.

daystar I will make sure I will have a caffiene overdose then. :)

Is Walcott feeling alright ? Granted he is young but when matched up against players defending with the same pace that simple lets knock it past them & run which might work against Corluka (hell I could run faster if its required)wont work & seldom worked even as a Arsenal substitute barring the OAPs of AC Milan.

Tomorrow he will be no doubt named as one of the most exciting talents in the world when truth be told I don’t see that much in him . Lennonesque.

Ashley Young has far more skill & is one of the very few England players along with Joe Cole & admittedly the thug Rooney who have some real ability.

Symptomatic of the modern game. A carefully disguised pass suffices just as well as a fast paced sprint. Perhaps Spains win in the summer might bring some coaches back to the path of emphasising this rather than continuing down the road of picking athletes over footballers.

Perhaps France ? Platini hardly had a smile on his face when Les Bleus were in action.

Most english players are well over-rated, Terry has been enthusing over Walcott in a statement made just a little while ago. I’m sure you’re right Aurelius, by the morning he’ll be the new english wonderkid, who needs Messi or Aguero when you can have Walcott, and he’s a lot cheaper.

I was just preparing some refreshments for the night ahead daystar. Thought I might catch a couple of films in between.

Sky 1 compadre WITH the sound down. I find it helps with Sky analysts. :)

See you later.
