AFA President Claims Decision On Next Head Coach Could Be Revealed By Week’s End

October 28th, 2008 | By: Christian | 14 Comments »

Yesterday afternoon in Buenos Aires, officials from the Argentine Football Association met to discuss who would become the next head coach of the national team, a reunion that appeared to end without any agreed consensus. However, President Julio Grondona has recently told Diario Olé that a decision could now be revealed in as early as “two to three days.”

By all accounts, it appears that Carlos Bianchi is right now the odds-on favorite to succeed Alfio Basile, and has now pulled ahead of the other candidates that include Diego Maradona, Miguel Angel Russo, and Sergio Batista.

Meanwhile, the only definitive choice that has come out from AFA this week is that Sergio Batista will likely be in charge for the upcoming friendly against Scotland on November 19th.

Want to learn more about the 4 potential candidates? Jeremy on The Argentina Offside has a fine breakdown of each of the names being called as possible replacements for Basile. As always, post your thoughts below.

Not to get off track and promote myself, but here’s my take on the soon to be end of the Simeone era with River. Sad, sad, sad.

Anyway, as for as the NT…I gotta say, I’m a little disappointed that Batista isn’t at the top of the list.

Thanks James. What happened with Simeone? I still love the fact that he played that speech from ANy Given Sunday to his players.

ALEXA,
Aimar is not injured “again”. He’s still recovering from his thigh injury he had against Porto in september. He’ll come back soon and show all his class. Benfica had a difficult start this year but they are really coming back.

I’ll maybe catch the Bordeaux game tonight & give some news from Placente & Cavenaghi, to the few here who are interested in. Cavegol is going to score once more, I can feel it.

I’ve just been reading that the AFA are going to offer the job to Maradona along with Bianchi.

Alfio, Emiliano Papa plays for Velez Sarsfield. I think he’s a left full back, but honestly I don’t remember much about him.

Marcos Angeleri, is a very good central defender who plays for Estudiantes La Plata.

Sorry I can’t say much more about them.

Marcos Angeleri plays for Estudiantes and is a defender. Emiliano Papa is a midfielder who’s playing at Velez Sarsfield.

New thread up. There will be more new posts as news becomes available, so apologies ahead of time.

Maradona? Albo, this will indeed be a mess.
