http://www.clarin.com/diario/2008/10/17/deportes/d-01783151.htm

Miguel Angel Russo will be the next coach of Argentina. Batista will be the interim coach until December and coach the friendly against Scotland.

Russo has already spoken to the San Lorenzo people, including Marcelo Tineeli, and they would have no problems in letting him go as long as he finishes the year at San Lorenzo.

Russo is an excellent choice and he is a "team turnaround" specialist. Lanus in the early 1990's while he was still taking his coaching course; Velez 2005 after they had lost the 2004 title on the last day; Boca Libertadores champ afetr LaVolpe choked the championship away the previous season; and now San Lorenzo after el Pelado left a bad taste in the mouths of players and club officials.

Felipe.. nice of you to bring up Ramon Diaz. I like him a lot too, but Maradona and him do not get along, and that hasn't sat well with Gordana; so there is almost no chance Diaz gets the chance to be NT coach. Really a shame in that Diaz picked the one guy you don't want to mess with in Argy football and it ruined his NT aspirations both as a player and as a coach.

I was going to say Ramon Diaz, Aurelius. But he's just signed for America in Mexico no? I don't know how these peoples contracts work. He's got a great record and has coached lots of clubs so would be unlikely to have any sort of bias like Basile (maybe he'd lean towards River and San Lorenzo) but I haven't read his name in the frame anywhere.
Wow! You want something so much and then you don't know how to react when it comes. It's kind of sad for Basile in a way, but he had lost the team completely and was doing a bad job. He is also very rich so my sympathy is waning (plus he'll get another job anyway).
I dunno about Batista: sure he won the Olympics but if you look at his original list of players, was he much different from Basile? Remember he wanted to take Cruz and called Heinze and Burdisso before he settled for Pareja in defence. I'd still welcome him but I'm not 100% convinced.
I don't like Simeone at all. Okay he's had a great start to his career but I think he is still too connected to his own generation. I mean, Veron, Zanetti, Crespo are all good friends of his. What Argentina needs is less of these players. Hell, he even said a few months ago that Veron was the best player in Argentina. Logically, he'd call him then.
Bianchi would be good and he'd keep Riquelme no doubt but would know how to build a system around him. He hates Grondona though, doesn't he?
Everyone is talking about Miguel Angel Russo: he has done great the last few years...anyway this is an exciting time. This is what everyone wanted, right?

Perhaps even Caruso Lombardi who has done well with Tigre & now with Newells Old Boys despite him signing a new contract there ? Surely the spot of NT coach would entice him ?

Maybe even Ramon Diaz ? Lets just hope its the right choice.

Alot of people are saying batista but I think this is a very bad choice, yes he won gold at the olympics but the football wasnt great to watch, we need someone who can bring back the tango and play beautifully again, i know hes not argentina and he might not get along with riquelme but PELLEGRINI would be a good choice, Maradona would definetly bring back the Tango but im not sure if he has the tactics, i would of said simeone until this season
i hope the new coach brings in the right players who have been missing
1) Lucho
2) Delgado besiktas
3) Ibagaza
4) Zarate
4) Garay
5) Piatti
6) Ledesma Lazio
7) Maxi

cheers

Well whether he did it for the right reasons or not he did the right thing.

The AFA have a three month grace period to consider seriously all the candidates & not to make a rushed choice.

My preference is Simeone & Tocalli in tandem with Batigol helping the strikers & Maradona as a pep coach.

This is great news!!! And it really took me surprise.....I wanna see Batista, Simeone or Tocalli as the new coach. Maybe Bianchi also could be a candidate.....Bilardo...I do not wanna see him as the coach, his defensive style and all, he belongs to the past. BUT, it is VERY important that we get a coach that don't depend too much on Riquelme. If everything is build around one player, we are VERY vulnerable when he has an off day. Also I guess we all have to admit that Riquelme is not the same player as he was. So we need a coach that will use Riquelme when he is playing like the true Riquelme, but a coach that has the balls to use someone else when he's not. Maradona...? dream on! That will never happen with Grondona in charge. But Maradona will be a stupid choice anyway. Batistuta....? What has he done? Has he shown anything as a coach?? You have to learn to crawl before you start to walk!
