2010 WCQ: Chile v Argentina: LIVE

October 15th, 2008 | By: Christian | 222 Comments »

After finally snapping their 5 game winless streak in World Cup Qualifying after this Saturday’s wild, 2-1 win over Uruguay, Argentina will hope to continue their fortunes tonight when they travel to Santiago to face Chile in Match 10.

On the surface, it would appear that Argentina have history on their side. According to the A FA website, since 1910, Argentina have defeated the Chileans 52 out of 77 times in all competitions, suffering only 20 draws, and a mere 5 losses, all which came in Santiago. Chile have not managed a victory against their neighbors since 1973. In World Cup Qualifying, Argentina have yet to register a defeat, winning 6 encounters and drawing 3.

But questions remain for the squad, and despite the victory this past weekend in Buenos Aires, there is still intense pressure from the media and the fans on Alfio Basile. With Riquelme out and Tevez out, and Mascherano, Demichelis, and Aguero questionable, los albicelestes may find themselves in a struggle to grab a win. And fans of the team should not make the mistake of underestimating Chile; despite their 2-0 loss in Argentina last October, Chile have improved greatly under Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa, and the team currently sits 5th in the table, separated only on goal differential behind Uruguay.

So what are your thoughts on the game? Can Argentina pull out a victory considering all the injuries? And what is more vital to you - that Argentina secure the points, or that they vastly improve their play, particularly after that weak second half last Saturday?

Feel free to comment as kickoff nears. The match will be live at 7:10PM ET/4PM PT, and available for viewing on various live streams. I’ll try to find the best ones, but please post any that you find in the comments section. Good luck to all, y Vamo’ Argentina!

Maradona? No thanks. He can cut his teeth coaching Boca Juniors or another side that’s not the national team and good luck to him. If he wanted to work he would be elbows deep in Boca Juniors, especially when Macri was in charge. But he’s lazy and I’d rather have some newbie instead of a lazy coach.

And let’s get one thing straight, this national team does not belong to Basile or Batista or anyone else other than Julio Grondona. He calls the shots. Period. Bianchi won’t coach the national team because he won’t have total freedom to do what he wants because of Grondona’s meddling. And believe me, everyone takes shit from Grondona, even if their name is Maradona.

As far as Basile is concerned, once Ischia gets sacked–which will be any day now–be sure to see Basile taking the helm at Boca again.

Batista, Simeone, and Russo are the primary choices..I think Bilardo or Bianchi are also in the frame..Bilardo could be ruthless and could eliminate the above 30’s…but we might lose good football!!! Anyways thanks Basile..

Wow can this be true. I vote for the olympic coach He did well and showed great tactics plus the players played hard for him. To me it seemed that some of the players wanted this to happen. Basile you did the right thing .

Basile gone! At least something good happened out of a bad result. Maradona as coach? Best player of all times but I don’t think he can make it as a coach

finally!! basile is gone!!!!!!

this just might the right time to bring a foreign coach onboard who will come with a new approach and turn the team into a physical team instead of a show team because with all the talent and skills it’s obvious that the game has changed and the teams either adapt or lose.

WOW.. wooooohooooooo. got a call from a buddy telling me Coco is gone.

as happy as I am to hear it, I still can’t believe it and don’t want to celebrate just yet. Anyone know who the candidates for the job are? I know Pekerman hated the Renova contract and hence why he left.

My choice for coach would be Hugo Tocali. Without question (unless Pekerman wants back, but even then I would prefer Tocali).

People, Maradona/Batistuta are not ready to be the coach of the NT. Basista needs some more seasoning, his Olympics style will be destroyed by Euro competition. Simone is pragmatical in his approach, but less tango and more of a direct approach. but still to raw.

I’m biased but I would be over the moon to see Tocali land the job.

forgot to mention that Tolo Gallego should be given consideration before going the other old boys route. He’s a very defensive coach and darn right boring to watch, but he is a system coach like Rafa Benetiz. Give him some lethal offensive players and we’ll win no doubt, just not with style (very good from set pieces, swift counter, aggressive with the ball using the Brazilian 7 passes or less type of mould). But he is someone I hope who also gets some pub

I know it’s not possible to appoint him now, But I believe Marcelo Bielsa is the best man to coach Argentina.

During his time (3-3-1-3 formation) from late 1998 to 2004, Argentina played the best & beautiful football. WC 2002 was more of bad luck rather then team playing badly. In all three matches Argentina dominated the possession has numerous chances to score goals but unfortunately were not able to put the ball in net. Won the olympic gold. Lost the Copa America final on penalties but even a die hard brazilian will agree that Brazil didn’t deserve to with that match. After him i have not seen Argentina dominate opponents like that. The brazilian legends were saying that Argentina plays the most beautiful and attacking footbal and it seems that they start the match as they are already 1-0 down. Even when he quitted Argentina were cruising in WC 2006 qualifiers.

Anyways i hope that who ever is assign the responsebility don’t change the way Argentina approach the game but may be team needs a bit more speed in attack at times rather then always looking to slow the game and then look for that decisive pass

Ive read somewhere that one of Basile’s problems and maybe one of the main reasons why he decided to quit was Messi. Apperently Basile asked Grandona to remove, for some time, 4 or 5 players from the call-up list that included Messi. Basile believed Messi was a hassle to his tactics since he didnt know how and where to play Messi effectively. Grondona then refused Basile’s proposal and that transladed to his resignation.

adras, where did you read or hear that stuff? if basile cant find a place or doesnt know how to use messi, then he has no business coaching soccer. it doesnt matter if you put him at a center back or a goalie. you shouldnt even dare think about not calling messi because you dont know what to do with him. its hard to believe that this is the problem.

i believe basile has the best intetnions in doing what he does, but basile just was not the right person for this team. thats it. Pekerman would be ideal

Hi everybody,

I have been praying for three days consistently for this man to step down. m happiest man on the earth. At last one good thing happens to my footballing country. I am hailing basile courage this time to admit his failure to make argentina the strongest team as far as result is concerned the strongest team.

i would go for a trio of batigol, batista and simeone

This is great news!!! And it really took me surprise…..I wanna see Batista, Simeone or Tocalli as the new coach. Maybe Bianchi also could be a candidate…..Bilardo…I do not wanna see him as the coach, his defensive style and all, he belongs to the past. BUT, it is VERY important that we get a coach that don’t depend too much on Riquelme. If everything is build around one player, we are VERY vulnerable when he has an off day. Also I guess we all have to admit that Riquelme is not the same player as he was. So we need a coach that will use Riquelme when he is playing like the true Riquelme, but a coach that has the balls to use someone else when he’s not. Maradona…? dream on! That will never happen with Grondona in charge. But Maradona will be a stupid choice anyway. Batistuta….? What has he done? Has he shown anything as a coach?? You have to learn to crawl before you start to walk!

Well whether he did it for the right reasons or not he did the right thing.

The AFA have a three month grace period to consider seriously all the candidates & not to make a rushed choice.

My preference is Simeone & Tocalli in tandem with Batigol helping the strikers & Maradona as a pep coach.

Alot of people are saying batista but I think this is a very bad choice, yes he won gold at the olympics but the football wasnt great to watch, we need someone who can bring back the tango and play beautifully again, i know hes not argentina and he might not get along with riquelme but PELLEGRINI would be a good choice, Maradona would definetly bring back the Tango but im not sure if he has the tactics, i would of said simeone until this season
i hope the new coach brings in the right players who have been missing
1) Lucho
2) Delgado besiktas
3) Ibagaza
4) Zarate
4) Garay
5) Piatti
6) Ledesma Lazio
7) Maxi

cheers

Perhaps even Caruso Lombardi who has done well with Tigre & now with Newells Old Boys despite him signing a new contract there ? Surely the spot of NT coach would entice him ?

Maybe even Ramon Diaz ? Lets just hope its the right choice.

I was going to say Ramon Diaz, Aurelius. But he’s just signed for America in Mexico no? I don’t know how these peoples contracts work. He’s got a great record and has coached lots of clubs so would be unlikely to have any sort of bias like Basile (maybe he’d lean towards River and San Lorenzo) but I haven’t read his name in the frame anywhere.
Wow! You want something so much and then you don’t know how to react when it comes. It’s kind of sad for Basile in a way, but he had lost the team completely and was doing a bad job. He is also very rich so my sympathy is waning (plus he’ll get another job anyway).
I dunno about Batista: sure he won the Olympics but if you look at his original list of players, was he much different from Basile? Remember he wanted to take Cruz and called Heinze and Burdisso before he settled for Pareja in defence. I’d still welcome him but I’m not 100% convinced.
I don’t like Simeone at all. Okay he’s had a great start to his career but I think he is still too connected to his own generation. I mean, Veron, Zanetti, Crespo are all good friends of his. What Argentina needs is less of these players. Hell, he even said a few months ago that Veron was the best player in Argentina. Logically, he’d call him then.
Bianchi would be good and he’d keep Riquelme no doubt but would know how to build a system around him. He hates Grondona though, doesn’t he?
Everyone is talking about Miguel Angel Russo: he has done great the last few years…anyway this is an exciting time. This is what everyone wanted, right?

Felipe.. nice of you to bring up Ramon Diaz. I like him a lot too, but Maradona and him do not get along, and that hasn’t sat well with Gordana; so there is almost no chance Diaz gets the chance to be NT coach. Really a shame in that Diaz picked the one guy you don’t want to mess with in Argy football and it ruined his NT aspirations both as a player and as a coach.

http://www.clarin.com/diario/2008/10/17/deportes/d-01783151.htm

Miguel Angel Russo will be the next coach of Argentina. Batista will be the interim coach until December and coach the friendly against Scotland.

Russo has already spoken to the San Lorenzo people, including Marcelo Tineeli, and they would have no problems in letting him go as long as he finishes the year at San Lorenzo.

Russo is an excellent choice and he is a “team turnaround” specialist. Lanus in the early 1990’s while he was still taking his coaching course; Velez 2005 after they had lost the 2004 title on the last day; Boca Libertadores champ afetr LaVolpe choked the championship away the previous season; and now San Lorenzo after el Pelado left a bad taste in the mouths of players and club officials.
