2010 WCQ: Argentina v Uruguay – A Must Win?
When Argentina takes the field tomorrow afternoon against Uruguay in Buenos Aires, their 9th fixture in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying, there will be more at stake then simply performing well against their rivals from across the Rio de la Plata.
Riding a 5 game winless streak, with one loss and 4 consecutive draws, and questions of turmoil in the dressing room revolving around one of the squad’s most talented yet erratic stars, Alfo Basile’s squad is finding itself in a position that almost no one saw coming – desperately needing a victory to stop the bleeding. While many Argentina fans, myself included, may have assumed that Argentina’s main challenge during this qualifying group for South Africa was whether los albicelestes would finish ahead of Brazil for top stop, now, with strong performances from current leaders Paraguay, and a resurgent Uruguay and Chile (the last two representing Argentina’s next opponents during this international break), the question now seems to be if Argentina can comfortable finish within the top four spots that will qualify directly to the World Cup.
So what are your thoughts on tomorrow’s game – does it represent a must win for Argentina? Are you worried that if there is a real collapse over these next two games, that there will a chance that Argentina may struggle to even advance to the WC? Is Basile playing for his job, or is he practically out the door? And finally, should Riquelme be left in the squad?
The match will be played live tomorrow at 5PM ET/2PM PT. Please check back for the live blog here at the Argentina World Cup Blog, and look for links to the match prior to kickoff. Thanks for your continued support of this website, and good luck to all tomorrow.

I think this might be an ok lineup…at least against teams from South America, but I would also like to see Milito in stead of Tevez from the start. Milito is not a very good striker in my opinion, but he is at least a true striker. It’s a good thing for us that Forlan is out…..Maybe Abreu can do something, but I have a feeling we will win the game 2-1.

This is the line up i got from jumptv
Juan Pablo Carrizo
Nicolas Andres Burdisso
Martin Gaston Demichelis
Gabriel Ivan Heinze
Javier Adelmar Zanetti
Javier Alejandro Mascherano
Esteban Matias Cambiasso
Juan Roman Riquelme
Carlos Alberto Tevez
Lionel Messi
Diego Alberto Milito
Coach: Alfio Basile

procrastinator.. well said, but weirdly enough that formation will benefit Tevez the most at the expense of the other 3. For some reason, I think Tevez will do well today as it looks like he will play at the bottom of the upfield triangle.
Man, I just wanna see a win. a good ol fashioned 3-0, easy on the nerves type of game.

So Riquelme is indeed playing. So there is no chance for Di Maria.

i bought this match on jumptv….if i remember correctly, they don’t have english commentary… is there a way to fix this? Damn !!

2-0 aguero

damn, Zanetti’s having a really good game of it. Riquelme too, when he gets the ball.
even though it’s a very physical match, Riquelme’s holding and releasing very nicely.

Burdisso is really weak

The eternal problem of our defense. No one will clear the ball, they want to start dribbling from own defense.

to be honest, we’ve played some terrible soccer. there is no build up, no semblance of a plan. it’s unreal as to how out of sync we look. I mean, this is a collection of some of the best players in the world and we look worse than some JV teams. there is just no formation / tactic and it’s almost as if our training sessions have consisted of Basile putting the ball on the ground and asking the players to play. Really shambolic. How can we be this terrible?

what happened?
why the total collapse?
can’t even hold up the ball now

Uruguay have really wound up some of the Argentina players… a red card might not be too far to go.

this is seriously stupid. taking off Aguero for Milito????
surely Riquelme should go instead, no?
Tevez could have played up front with Milito with Aguero and Messi on the ‘wings’.
Riquelme’s looking lost/tired again. hasn’t managed to make a single useful free kick in … years.

if you ever want to know if a manager has lost a team, this is shining evidence. no cohesion, all these fouls, players doing their own thing. yes the referee had a massive say in that. but what is:
1 – tevez doing as a winger?
2 – did we even have a MF. Cucho, tevez, mache, roman, ledesma were all over the place
3 – how a coach cannot properly put messi in situations where he can run at the D is just terrible. he is the best in the world at running at Ds and we never got him the space.
I could go on, but wow. just terrible. Please Basile, just LEAVE already
