2010 WCQ: Argentina v Paraguay LIVE

Argentina continues its quest towards South Africa 2010 this afternoon when they host current group leaders Paraguay at the Monumental Stadium in Matchday 7 of World Cup Qualifying.
After two consecutive 0-0 draws for the national team, first away to rivals Brazil in the previous WCQ fixture, then to Belarus in an international friendly, Argentina have since been boosted by their 2008 Olympic Gold Medal victory. Paraguay meanwhile claim the top spot in the group with 13 points, two ahead of Argentina, but last time out suffered a shock 4-2 defeat to 9th place Bolivia (albeit in the high altitude of La Paz)and will have to deal without injured Salvador Cabanas, Denis Caniza, and possibly Roque Santa Cruz. Still, history is against Argentina, who have failed to beat Paraguay in their last 4 WCQ encounters, with the previous win coming in Asuncion on July 6th, 1997.
What player will shine the brightest for Argentina? Does the squad have what it takes to defeat Paraguay at home AND catapult themselves to first place in the group? You can find out tomorrow at 3PM ET/NOON PT. The match will only be available online, so check back soon for links and starting lineups. Please post your thoughts below, and good luck.

Currently NT don’t have world class full backs. Zaneti was damn good but now he is too old and Sorin is also injured. Why not play with 3 at the back (NT do have plenty of options for CB)

I’ve quickly readen almost all the comments.
I don’t understand. Most of you really didn’t know who was Carrizo???
And why is almost everybody surprised about what happened?
Your blogger Maxi Lopez mentions our problems all the time for 2 years and a half and annonces you the consequences every day : )
DAY1STAR,
Still convinced about Pato? Just kidding.
I liked what PROCRASTINATOR & SKYWALKER have said.
SKYWALKER,
In 2006, there was a way to use both Zanetti & Sorin: 4-3-1-2. But with 3-5-2, Pekerman chosed Sorin and this decision maybe affected Zanetti. Concerning the #8, I’m sure you meant Lucho/Cambiasso and not Mascherano.
ALBO,
You must have missed or not understood my “Pekerman” posts since 2006. Pekerman used different attacking systems regarding the opponents:
IC, SM: 3-4-1-2. Holland, Mexico: 4-3-1-2. Germany: Both. SKYWALKER is absolutely correct.
Concerning the defending systems it’s another (very interesting) story that we’ve already spoken about.
PROCRASTINATOR,
For me, Sorin has become a monument.
AURELIUS,
I’ll read all your posts another time. I’m sure they are interesting like always.
PS: ALBO, only injuries can prevent Pato to start WC 2010. Pato is Basile’s goalkeeper forever.
We have a striker. Even many. But Basile prefers to use second stars forwards instead of a #9.

ALBO,
Cambiasso is excellent. I’m not saying this because I’m a River fan…

Maxi, you sound angry with me.
I don’t get it, but it’s ok.
You were very clear about your point of view.
If I said something that bothered you or anybody else, I’m sorry.
But wishing injuries to people sounds a bit childish to me.
May be it’s time for Basile to leave, but saying something like”
“only injuries can prevent Pato to start WC 2010. Pato is Basile’s goalkeeper forever.”
I don’t know, that doesn’t go well with me.
I have been talking about Carrizo (River) before you even knew who he was.
And I think he is going to be our GK.
Once again, I’m sorry if caused your reaction and your opinion above.

Hey, Maxi, when was i ever convinced about Pato? I wanted another goalie to have a chance and the only way i saw that happening was if Pato got injured. But, at the same time i wouldn’t wish serious harm to him or anything that could end his career. Hence i was happy that the injury wasn’t serious. Now, if our defence plays better with a different goalie then maybe Basile will reconsider.

i think basile problem is he is so afraid to play a true #9. he does’nt want to sit aguero and tevez at the same time, the reason for this i don’t know. the issue is we need results the 2 second forwards is clearly not working and were struggling to score goals. basile must sacrifice one of these guys and groom a true #9 for our future. we do have talent in that dept cavi, denis, lopez, higuain and milito so there are no excuses. for this upcoming game against peru we the fans demand a significant improvement.

DAY1STAR,
Cambiasso is a #5, not Gago. He will replace Mascherano. Gago will be our #8.
Yesterday, Basile attacked 3-4-2-1 and tried to defend 4-3-2-1 (which I would have loved to watch but Tevez got excluded and wasted everything). Zanetti moving on the right flank and switching the system, hee needed a left central defender (=Heinze). This is why he prefers Gabi that other central defenders. In 2006 it was the Sorin/Burdisso combo, as SKYWALKER has said.
KRIS,
Funny post.
RUNE,
Always optimistic as usual : )
ALBO,
I’m not angry at all. Don’t be sorry for what you didn’t do. I just write fast and try to catch all the comments.
DAY1STAR,
I remember someone was praising Pato some days ago and I thought it was you. Sorry.
AIMAR10,
Exactly.

DAY1STAR, I meant J-ARGIE sorry.

Maxi, i meant that Gago would come into the team.

Gago is actually a “double 5″ while defending and a #8 while he has the ball.

AURELIUS,
No need to be disappointed after this game. It was another lesson (the 36th…) that proved us that Pato can make us lose (like against Germany) and that our players need to be careful with referees.
It’s been 2 times for Tevez and it’s enough. True strikers like Denis & Cavegol deserve a chance, like you said.

AURELIUS,
I forgot to say that we can’t judge our defence after last game. We were fighting against 10 opponents in the Paraguayan box to correct Pato’s mistake. Heinze should be a sub. I say this for a long time now. Basile should try a Gonzalo-DeMichelis-Coloccini 3-men-defence next time. I still think Heinze is a good defender. What is important is the ability of a player to correct his mistakes.
It’s a pleasure to discuss about Argentina with you people. Good night.

The thing with tevez is that he got a yellow card in the 16th minute, that should have made him be more careful in further challenges, and in the 30th minute he committed another foul, which even if it didn’t warrant a straight red would have got him a second yellow, and we still would have been left with 10 men. We really can’t afford that to happen again.

Basile should be banished from the bench, if only for humanitarian reasons. He scares the living bejeesus out of my girlfriend’s little nephew. We can’t have such an ugly coach scaring little children like that!
You guys have all given a good analysis of the game. All I want to add is that Paraguay got lucky. Where was the Par team that was supposed to be “different”? More of the same from the Paraguas. I hope Chilavert shuts up now (wishful thinking).

Just to let you guys know, the second leg between Argentina and Chile sub20 was not televised, so i couldn’t post any links.
The match ended with a 2-1 win for us, the goals were scored by Salvio(penalty) and Neira.

I think Argentina played a good second half with 10 men 3-3-1-2 and a few times were close to scoring.
I like to see Riquelme atacking the box like a forward. When he does that the team becomes so dangerous.
Paraguay pressed the marks throughout the whole field as expected from a Bielsa school coach.
But as usual, nobody could do it for all 90 minutes. That’s when Riquelme and Messi could connect a few nice passes.

This short article from Clarín, I found interesting.
(poor translation):
“An own goal that leaves us with some serious questions.
Gabriel Heinze and Roberto Abbondanzieri committed the worst possible blooper last night in their match against Paraguay for a qualifying round of WC10.
Pato got hurt during the same play, and just like in Germany 2006, had to leave the pitch in the hottest moment of the match.
Years ago, Gabriel Heinze had had his golden time, back when Bielsa was in charge, and “el gringo” played some awesome full back.
But his level went down under Pekerman, and now, under Basile he’s at a low.
Is it time to make some changes in la selección?
Juan Pablo Carrizo has shown he’s got what it takes to be at WC10. And Romero could be a nice sub.
Same with the left side defender.
Last night, with Cata Diaz on the right, Demichelis as Líbero and Collocini on the left, the team already got a lot better.
And let’s not forget the kids, Ezequiel Garay and Nicolás Pareja who are also ready for the big team.
This “own goal” cost us 2 points, and is the type of mistake we can’t make during a World Cup. Meanwhile, South Africa is getting awful close.
Next match against Perú in Lima, Carrizo will have another chance to show his game, like last night when he stopped a vicious header from Haedo in the second half and saved the draw.
Agustín Orión got called up to be at the bench for Abbondanzieri.
Basile must also decide on the defending line.
We all hope Basile accepts that there are cycles that come to an end, and it’s time for some serious changes.”

Great posts everybody. As expected in out blog.
I think we played a great game considering we were 0-1 and a man down. An own goal is even worse. All these events early in the game can really get the morale down. We kept fighting. It was a very tough use case for us and we did well. I am happy at the end of the day.
Now, we would have won the game if we had a player like Ruud Van Nistelrooy type of #9. We need to try out few options. And they need to come thick and fast. Someone from Cavenaghi/Lisandro/Denis needs to settle down quickly.
Pato, getting injured is surely the best thing that happened in a game. I agree with Albo, that I do not want anyone to get injured. But I support Maxi Lopez and others. This was the only way we could have seen Carrizo. I always felt both Pato and Ustari are crap. So its a blessing in disguise.
Heinze is a man of past. Slow and like an animal. He is not much of technique. He is more of passion. But he is an old horse now. Patrick Evra so easily replaced him.
Overall, to me, even though a home 1-1 against Paraguay is not the best, there were many hidden positives. Hope we can go ahead with those.

i think everyone here relalised we should have one this game. despite the sending off we created many chances in the second half. all we need is better finishing. the defence was so composed in the second half. i hope basile would play 3 central defenders zanetti and jonas on the wings a double #5, an enganche and messi with a true #9 upfront we would be much better off

I have to say — Chile is absolutely toothless.

Arrggghh!!!!! What a bad weekend. First it was me getting struck down by a terrible food poisoning and the next our favourite team just can’t seem to beat these Paraguayans. Now I’m having my Monday blues at work.
Okay time for me to calm down.
First of all I’m still trying figure out what did went wrong during the game. Which player is the culprit? Was it the coach’s tactics? Was the pressure of playing our first home since capturing gold in Beijing?
In the end, I have to summarize that it was the whole team that let us down. Of course, Tevez’s sending off only made things worst but that’s no excuse.
On paper, man to man we are way better then our opponent even if we had to play 10 men.
C’mon Argentina!!! Let’s go to Lima and do things they way it should be. Win!!! Win!!! Win!!!

Basile should have substituted himself or get himself injured or someone needs to tackle him.
We should have Olympics twice a year. Wooo, the honeymoon isn’t over…

So if Brazil wins tonihgt, they will tie with Argentina for second place, right??…thisis crazy!!!

Based on what Basile did in his last stint as head of la selección, I’m expecting a similar type of performance from him here. During his last stint, he became “locked in” with “his” players and refused to let them go. Guys who had their best footballing days behind them in the WC qualifiers for ‘94 and in the end, after the 5-0 loss to Colombia AT HOME, he was resigned to call up Maradona to save our qualification against the Australians.
While a similar implosion of what happened on the road to USA ‘94 is unlikely (but given that we’ve built a team around one player AGAIN, Riquelme, we might be one really hard tackle or a ruptured ligament away from being fucked) still, it says something about the Basile’s inability to think on his feet and to have a plan B.
He’s the type of coach that likes to be able to roll his teams off his tongue but Basile has yet to find that team from our pool of VERY talented players. He is also very faithful to his formation on the pitch almost to a fault. But given these set backs, he’s very adept at reading the game and knowing when things are going wrong, I’m just not sure he’s able to turn the tide in his favor, which he should easily be able to do given the fantastic players that he could put on the bench to come on and change a game.
My comments are all based on the overview of Basile’s prior stint with the national team and his current progress so far. I’m not saying that we should change coaches at this juncture since that would be unreasonable for the incoming coach and a major blow to our current qualifying campaign, but I think we should realize Basile’s shortcomings or at very least realize that there is a problem and it is most likely the coach.
Basically, we’ve got a great pool of players to choose ONE extremely competitive starting 11 and a coach who may or may not be up to the challenge. Thoughts?
