What is Pekerman thinking?

June 4th, 2006 | By: Jonathan | 113 Comments »

There has been a lot of chatter in the other posts on whether Saviola will start over Tevez, and why on earth Pato is still our starting keeper. I mean, the man nonchalantly walked out of the penalty box while holding the ball in his hands!

The general consensus of Argentina fans want Franco or Utsari to start in goal, and demand Tevez to play in front of Saviola. Pekerman is already in the dog house, after not including Zanetti in the squad.

So what happens if Pekerman goes forward with this strategy and Argentina can’t score? What happens if Pato lets in 2 easy goals against the Ivory Coast?

After the last World Cup, Argentina cannot afford another first round disaster. Here is a team that is supposed to represent a nation, and the nation’s (nay, the world’s) widespread opinions are ignored by a single individual.

If Argentina fails, could Pekerman be the perfect scapegoat? And at the same time, if Pekerman leads Argentina to the crown, sticking with his guns despite all the criticism, could he be the greatest coach of all time?

Your thoughts…

i couldn’t agree more with DaveC

i would add that pekerman will have the team playing like an argentine team true to its roots.. unlike the worse coach argentina had since at least the early 1970s- Bielsa - who had our team playing longballs as if we were England… then when the plan didn’t work he asked Aimar to come in and save him and Aimar almost did playing of course like Argentines play

TOQUE TOQUE TOQUE..

so i am very excited about having a team- whether we win or lose- which will respect the tenets of argentine soccer which are of course based on the country’s culture…

who can ask for anything more?

(by the way latest word from argentina is that Palacio now has a shot of starting and milito could go in for heinze who’s recovery might not be 100%… on the other hand this could all be designed to throw off our opponents…one thing is for sure.. today they were working on tactics/strategy pretty hard in camp argentina)

You know what team worries me, Germany…they are the host country, and never has a host country exited in the first round…will Germany maybe exit early??? Its very possible because they got a brand new young team, that will have to much presure on them from the Fans,a nd their coach.

Wamdiego10> I’m sure the rest of the Argentina fans on this site appreciate your support and wonder when your brand of team affection is going to go back to France.

You’re a discrace to football and it’s fans and you would fit in nicely with the English hooligans that are despised all around Europe.

Denis Susac,
You think people want to talk to you here, Man you have a very inflated opinion of yourself
(well i am not really surprised since you are delusional).
However Soccer fans in this blog will not tolerate your constant badgering and your putting down the Argentine team.
BTW. For your info, heres a link that will show you that fans from all nationalities support the Argentine team.

http://argentina.worldcupblog.org/1/where-are-you-from.html
So unlike Croatia, The Argentine team has a rich legacy and a worldwide following.

So next time do a little research before babbling nonsense on this blog.
Vamos Argentina!!!

Yes, my post was ludicrous. Right. In turn, you probably think that Wam’s was OK huh??..What he exhibits is not support, it’s fanaticism. And we all have seen in recent years what happens when fanatics are allowed to run free. I now group you in the same low-life cesspool as Wam and England supporters.

Argentina WILL be knocked out in the first round….BRAVO Denis!

Well forgive me for not diving into the mudslinging, but i just want to return to the original topic of this post.

I was reading La Nacion this morning and it appears the Pekerman is more or less set on his first team. i.e. Saviola and Crespo up front, and the rest as we have said before.

However, there are reports that Rodrigo Palacio is the new sensation in training and may force himself into the line up, though given Pekerman’s apparently stubborn nature, i doubt this. It is interesting though that this young unknown player can stand out. Could he be a trump card? I mean defenses even know about Tevez a little, but Rodrigo Palacio is virtually unknown outside of Argentina.

Whatever it is, we can be sure that we will see him during the tournament, and he will have to grab that opportunity.

From all reports, it appears as if the team is in high spirits. From the news items, I’ve continuously noticed that Scaloni seems to be a livewire. Maybe his inclusion goes beyond just replacing Zanetti.

And i’m just wondering if the news out of the camp was similar (so positive) four years ago, or if this is unique? and something that gives hope of a united, hungry Argentina.

great question slick on whether the team was as united/having fun in 2002..

really impossible to say.. before the england game everything was perfect for agentina according to the press..then suddenly there were reports of a big rift on the team.. a sorta insurreciton lead by veron..

before 2002, given argentina’s economy had just collapsed, the players were really carrying even more pressure than usual on their shoulders.. you heard a lot the phrase about them wanting to “give the people a happiness” in reference to the terrible economic situation in argentina..

thankfully this type of extra pressure is not around today…

there is a sense of a younger more freewheelin team out there but if the results against ivory coast are not good i would imagine any fun will come to an end…. it does also seem like everyone gets along well….everyone is emphasizing “team” and is on the same page it seems…

i have to add that pekerman is a figure who in argentine soccer - particularly with these players- is very respected….

Yikes…….We are living the same situation in Mexico with Antonio Lavolpe. I guess is just a matter of trusting your coach and your team, support them ’till the end and hope it doesn’t fall apart too soon.

Aguante Argentina & Mexico!!

Here we go again with an overthinker, overcoaching coach -who needs to be the main figure of the team “a la Bielsa”. Pele played against the Checks in Mexico 70, Maradona played against the Greeks in USA 94 - Messi cannot play against IC? Please, stop with the bullshit and put your best players dude. Viva Argentina la puta que te pario!

pekerman must be fired he is too defensive in his approach.and gives chances to older players like crespo but didnt include zannetti who could run down the pitch like thunder.

Argentina should not feel so confident just because of their win against Serbia/Montenegro gave up the game very easily. I do hope Argentina goes far, and maybe wins, but there are a lot of good teams out there and some outstanding ones too. I’m not impressed with Brazil or Ronaldinho. I would hate to see Argentina have to play against England. Feelings run too high between those two countries. VAMOS ARGENTINA!

whqatever happens the coach is chosen for he knows better. we are better seers than performers. a nation is coached by one man, let paker coach argentina. all he needs is our support. i doubt whether zannetti supports any other team for he was left out. he is a strong guy and a proffessional i believe.

I belive Pekerman has always been a wise coach. He always knows what he is doing because So far in the world cup his plans worked out well.I hope he can lead Argentina all the way otherwise he will be blamed big time for not including Zanetti,Samuel,Veron and Lopez.

ان شاالله توی تورنمنت بعدی به اون چیزی که لایقشه میرسه
Maradone the best of players and Batistuta the best of striker age
