Time to move on

April 6th, 2009 | By: Julian D | 241 Comments »

Well guys, it’s time to move on. Let’s begin to think about Colombia, our next qualifier on June 6th, 2009 in Buenos Aires. I know, it’s hard to swallow the loss against Bolivia, but hey futbol is like that, sometimes that happens, and we just gotta swallow our pride, and try to restore it again. We got exactly 2 more months (today) to prepare for our next game.

What should we do? Who should we play? I heard Maradona and Bilardo are having issues working together, and that Diego doesn’t want to listen to anybody. Anyone else here this? Some good news, we have Oscar Ustari back playing for Getafe, after being injured for 232 days! Will Maradona consider him? I think he should, I think he just might be better than Carrizo.

For those who can read in spanish, this is an interesting article: http://www.diariodecuyo.com.ar/home/new_noticia.php?noticia_id=335499

What about an enganche? Does Argentina have to play with an enganche? Should we try Veron, Montenegro, D’Alessandro, Aimar? What to do! Let’s all give it our best shot at analyzing these factors that come into play when it comes to our dear seleccion Argentina.

-Julian

As for picking Higuain over Aguero, right now Higuain is playing better and more consistently, and he provides power and height we lack with both Aguero and Messi up front.

I’m at the point where Zarate, Lavezzi, Higuain all deserve not only standard callups, but starting opportunities. Lavezzi can play LM.

I believe Higuain should get a call too. Me and Todd have been saying that for a year now :)

I am a strong believer in “form” when it comes to goal scoring or strikers. When they are in form a back heel or miss kick goes in too. And Higuain is in form. Lisandro and Cavenaghi was in last season. But I don’t think we give opportunities like that.

I agree with Todd, if Higuain was not there, Real would be 3rd or 4th.

I laughed when Higuain said he will score 15 goals in La liga. But he did it.

hmmm, Cruz was in form when he played for the NT, did u see him score any goals?
Aguero is coming back to form and is a much better player than Higuain, he’s also a good header of the ball. how many headers has Higuain scored?

Cruz wasn’t the best player on his team when he got called up. Not by a longshot. He was slow and old.

Higuain is the MVP for Real this season. And he is only going to get better. He has the size and the speed. He has scored more goals than Aguero and played less early on for his team, and he has more assists.

He can also play right wing very well.

That’s all.

As for Maradona giving anyone a chance over his son-in-law…most doubtful.

Lately Aguero has been fatiguing a lot. I think he needs some rest and for now would better serve as a supersub to bring in a finishing blow with fresh energy.

I think that fatigue is really what’s been causing his form to suffer. His skill is not an issue at all.

cruz was in goalscoring form for inter when he was picked.
not the point, higuain plays for a better team, has more opportunities than aguero, atletico has been off form as a team, aguero hasn’t been playing that badly.
Aguero has scored 18 goals and 12 assists so far this season, for Atletico.

Hey Christian, can you give us an update on River Plate?
On Boca’s side, Riquelme and Battaglia are not confirmed.
They both have mild injuries and are training separated from the rest.

I dont know why this is turning into an arguement over Aguero or Higuain as they both should be called up. They both are fantastic players and have bright futures. I beleive that the four best options upfront right now are in Messi Aguero and Higuain. I beleive that Tevez and Levezzi should be attempted at the left midfield position or in the tevez situation as the link up between the midfield and forwards. I also beleive that if Zarate has a stand out year he could be a wild card player for the Nt just as was Messi in 2006.

What I am convinced of is that higuain is better than Denis Cruz Cavenaggi and Lisandro and Higuain should be called up before them.

I disagree on Higuain not deserving a starting slot. But up front we have a good problem. It’s good that we have to have that debate. Zarate, Higuain, Tevez, Aguero, Messi, Milito, Lavezzi, Cavenaghi, Palacio, etc. We have loads of talent.

It’s at the back and in midfield where we have a bad problem. I think Aimar would help a lot in the midfield. Higuain and Lavezzi can fill on the sides if need be, and that’s one of their most appealing characteristics.

In defense, dropping Heinze would improve our defense 10 fold on its own, but 10x close to nothing is still nothing, right?

yeah, it’s kinda funny that we keep changing forwards when our problem is in other positions.
Isn’t it?

Call up Aimar and drop Heinze and we solve 50% or more of the issues with the NT in one fell swoop.

Aguero does not have 18 goals and 12 Assists. Both of pretty much same stats this season, i personally think Aguero is technically more gifted but Higuain suits #9 shirt. I would prefer a three man attack of
Aguero–Higuain–Messi, with Zarate, Palacio, Lavezzi, Tevez etc being used as Subs.

In all competitions (Liga + Copa del rey + CL)
Higuain
start–Sub–Goals–Assist
30—-4—-17——-8

Aguero
Start–Sub–Goals–Assist
34—–4—-17—–7

Albo the problem has been that because of our wekaness at the back we sometimes field very defensive line ups to cover it. That is what Basile did and then we end up isolating our forwards and that occured even when Roman was playing. The reason I keep pounding on Higuain is because many here claim that you cant have the three midgets as our only attackers because teams will just over power us. higuain seesm to me to fit perfectly with ouir needs as he can play upfront to give us strength or can track back and play on the outside mid. He is a very versitle and strong player something that is seen as a weakness on our team.

I can attest that day1star’s figures are accurate. Some sources have 1 less assist from what I’ve seen, but they are right.

My issue isn’t with Aguero’s talent for the Cup. Right now he isn’t playing as well, and he has been looking tired.

We all want the best damn team we can have. I believe that team must include Higuain and Aguero in some capacity. I would be very disappointed if Higuain and Zarate got left out.

the best team is not always a bunch of superstars, it’s players who get on well together, who gel on the pitch and have an understanding with one another. Taking 24/25 primadonna’s who r all stars in their own right, will win u nothing.
