the COPA is coming up fast, Who should get called up

June 15th, 2007 | By: Messay Getahun | 161 Comments »

We are only a few weeks away from the copa. I am eager to see who basile would call. who should get called, and who shouldnt get called. Should this tournament be used as a way to win at all means necessary? or build a solid foundation in preparation or the world cup? how should we approach this tournament?

El Coco is going by who is in form and PLAYING football at this time! Since Saviola has not been playing football lately for Barcelona, he is not competitive. Had he opted for making less money and more playing time with a lesser known club, he would have been in.. Oh money, the root of all evil… Eventually Saviola’s decision to stick with Barcelona despite being unwanted there is really hurting him now… This is simply my interpretation…

Here’s an interesting tidbit – Riquelme and Messi have the same birthday: June 24th.

Full squad list:

aimar10, Pinola lost his place to Riquelme actually.

which is only worse if you ask me. i agree, i think it sends a bad message to the rest of the squad.

i think riquelme will still have a great tournament nonetheless.

south american teams play with so much open space. Riquelme will destroy any team who gives him a lot of space. Unlike Europe.

Malik,

if Riquelme plays, USA has no chance at all. Remember Riquelme is on a mission right now since he is looking for a club to impress given that Villareal does not want him back…

Funny, I guess Riquelme is never really “officially retired”. He just didn’t play in friendlies!

yeyyyyyyyyyy Riqueleme has been called up . I have no other wish. It is sad that Saviola has been left out, plus I did not want to see Veron on the squad. other than that great team great players.

aimar10,
Based on Riquelme’s performances in the Copa Libertadores, he is the best player in the world right now. If you hate him, dont watch Argentina play and while you are at it, spare us your pathetic drivel.

Riquelme is back!!! I’m beyond happy about this. It’s wonderful to read these posts again.

So I have to ask this informed group—

Why no Saviola? I’m a bit sad for him. He tries so hard, actually succeeds, and still he is dissed by club and country.

I don’t think that Palacio is playing that great these days. We’ll see how he does.

Veron — what will come of this? WIll he actually play?

The big question for me is this –>>>>>>>
Can Riquelme and Messi find common ground? Their styles don’t really suit each other, and I think that on the personal level they don’t really care for each other (at least this is the impression I get from Messi), but can they create an alchemy that produces goals?

Please illuminate me with your thoughts, one and all….

Malik,

Veron has the ears of El Coco. Therefore, he will get his second chance. He must be really stupid to blow this one knowing his detractors are watching, some of them are in this blog.. Once again, we will have a powerful team. Are we going to watch the beautiful game through Argentina as against Serbia? Of course I am a dreamer…

Alexa,
Like the views are divided in their opinion of Riquelme, so are the players. Ayala, mascherano and a few seem to enjoy playing with him. But I dont think Messi,Aimar, Crespo, Veron etc like Riquelme.

Would be interesting to see how Messi and Riquelme complement each other. Much will depend on how the coach use them. Or else,
the day Messi shines with his dribbles, Riquelme may look like a fool in the ground. Dnd the day, Riquelme is back with his exquisite artistry, Messi may look like a fool with him failed attempts to run down defenders.

But to me, Riquelme may not give flashy moments that look great on you tube, but Argentina will always have a better game and a change of winning. But Messi might give a few you tube moments, with Argentina still not benefitting much, like the game against Netherlands.

Riquelme the blogger,

If you do not mind, I may add the following to your latest post:

Messi is very talented but he is not a creative genius. Riquelme, the player simply IS!

carrie,
Dont keep so much expectations that people are again going to blame everything if Argentina doesnt win the Copa.

Riquelme or Messi way decide the outcome of a game, but to win a tournament, everything has to go perfect. Winning a tournament is more than Riquelme or Messi’s stunner.

We are used to saying Maradona did it singlehandedly, Zidane did it singlehandedly or Tevez did it singlehandedly, Ronaldinho did it singlehandedly. But none of them did actually.

Wish everybody give their best for the team rather than ensuring his own 30 million dollar move to some European club.

The copa america is the training ground for the world cup. Arg wants this one more than Brazil because of what happened in the last WC (and in the last CA), but I’m sure Basile is also looking at this competition as a way to gear up for the WC. THis is probably why he chose Palacio over Saviola.

I would die of joy if Riquelme sticks it out and is majestic and winning in the next two years, but I think that everyone knows that the next WC will be Messi’s. (This is a billion dollar business after all. No one in charge is asking me!) I think that the only way that Riquelme plays a central part in the national team in the next few years is if he unlocks that tornado that is Lionel Messi.

Riquelme is brilliant. Did anyone see last night how he shot the ball to a Gremio defender to freak him out, and the defender almost made an own goal? I would want him on my team if he were a fat mental case 40 year old.

I think it’s possible that Riquelme and Messi can compliment each other in the same way Riquelme and Aimar complimented each other in the U20 World Cup of 1997.

At least if they get some more playing time together.

But Messi’s a total prodigy, no current footballer has done at 19 what Messi is doing at his age.
