Squad for Bolivia and Colombia

November 12th, 2007 | By: Linda | 468 Comments »

I’m back, having survived the exams (barely). Sorry about that. But anyway, we’ve got a new squad to pour over (for the qualifiers against Bolivia at home and Colombia away, so let’s get to it.

Goalkeepers: Roberto Abbondanzieri (Getafe, Spain), Mariano Andújar (Estudiantes de La Plata), Agustín Orión (San Lorenzo de Almagro)

Defenders: Fabricio Coloccini (Deportivo La Coruña, Spain), Gabriel Milito (Barcelona, Spain), Gabriel Heinze (Real Madrid, Spain), Javier Zanetti (Internazionale, Italy), Nicolás Burdisso (Internazionale), Martín Demichelis (Bayern Munich, Germany), Hugo Ibarra (Boca Juniors)

Midfielders: Esteban Cambiasso (Internazionale), Fernando Gago (Real Madrid), Javier Mascherano (Liverpool, England), Maxi Rodríguez (Atlético de Madrid, Spain), Juan Román Riquelme (Villarreal, Spain), Federico Insúa (América, Mexico), Sebastián Battaglia (Boca Juniors)

Forwards: Sergio Agüero (Atlético de Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Hernán Crespo (Internazionale), Carlos Tevez (Manchester United, England), Germán Denis (Independiente)

My thoughts on the inclusions and a couple of exclusions after the jump.

Inclusions

Interesting to see Andujar in there. Congratulations to him for his first call-up. Just one comment about defenders: I continue to be baffled by Coloccini. Nevermind, his club team are defending alright, I suppose.

Out of the forwards, Tevez has been on good form for Manchester United lately, so hopefully we’ll see that reflected if he starts. Aguero has been on fire, though, and I’d love to see more of him. Messi has played well, although he is starting to look tired, since he’s playing every game for Barca. Good to see Crespo in there - although he’s not been hitting the target for Inter in the last couple of games, he is a very good center forward, even in terms of general play.

Out of the midfielders, it’s pretty much the usual suspects. Even Battaglia, getting his first call-up in a while, has been around for a bit. Cambiasso has been on a good run for Inter, and Maxi has regained some form for Atletico, which is nice to see.

Exclusions

I’m guessing Ustari might have been called up if he hadn’t gotten injured. He’s not had the best start to his European career, I have to say. Saviola’s been left out again, I’m assuming on the basis that he’s not playing enough, since we do have a lot of forwards to choose from. Unfortunately, moving from Barca to Real hasn’t improved his playing situation all that much. I’ve banged on enough about Garay and why he needs to be in the national team set up, and lastly, here’s one that baffles me - Lucho Gonzalez. What’s happened there? Surely he’s not playing that badly?

Ken, thanks for the article.

Good to know Tevez is having fun. Tevez is a fighter. We know he’s working hard for Man U and NT, trying to prove his worth week-in and week-out. And, it is taking toll on him. Maybe, the red card is good for him, though. He need a break.

I think we need Basile to work more with the local players. Long distance with less rest are not ideal for Euro-based players. Players need to practice often together. Was there a sign that maybe Tevez & Messi were not playing well together? They need practice time, just like Tevez & Rooney. The European teams have clear advantage on this coz they’re always close together. And, actually it’s good for the NT too when Riquelme start to play for Boca again.

Cheers

Asil,
good to hear from you. Basile has too much
restriction on his contract from AFA to do
a good job. In contrast, Sir Alex has complete
freedom to do whatever he wants with any player.
Hence, we see how Tevez is truly growing under Sir Alex’s tutelage
while he is being played out of position
in the NT. You will see that Tevez will give
Sir Alex another 10 goals before the end of the
season. Hardship can either make you better or bitter.
In the case of Tevez, it leads to the former. So we
will see improvement as Tevez keeps getting more playing
time. I will patiently waiting for a Maradona style
goal before the end of the season.
I hope you get a chance to read the Marcella article
about JRR, which I also pasted above. Besides being an artist and a playmaker, he also displays poetic inspiration. I love it when he talks about himself in the third person. And I love it even more when he claimed
that JRR had a good year so far. What a smart way to kick
your detractor in the teeth?
Cheers back to you and take care.
Greetings,
Ken

Last night, at Coloso de Santa Ursula (Mex), in front of 80,000 people, humble “Argie Gunners” Arsenal de Sarandí came back TWICE during the game to beat América de México 2-3, in their first of two matches.
This club is so small they don’t have enough accommodations for international press.
They had to borrow Racing’s stadium in near Avellaneda to play the upcoming second match “at home”.
This team though, has a perfect record in away matches.
At this Sudamericana Cup, they’ve beat Goias in Brazil, Pachuca in México, Millionarios in Colombia, River Plate at River’s Monumental and America back in México. (talk about balls…)
So this moment is by far the top moment of their young life as a club (founded in the late 50s).
They know that if they win or draw the last home game this coming wednesday, next year they’ll play Boca Juniors (winner of last Copa Libertadores) for the Recopa and an automatic spot at the next Clubs World Cup in Japan. (!)
Arsenal de Sarandí… of all the little football clubs of the world…

I never thought I’d say this but I didn’t like how Messi played yesterday. Most of the time, he just seemed to run mindlessly into the Espanyol defense. He’s a great dribbler, but sometimes you need to avoid the challenges and look for space. He did exactly the opposite yesterday, and ruined numerous attacks that way. At other times, his waited far too long with his passes so the player at the other end was not in a good situation anymore.

Oh well, everyone’s entitled to there bad game I suppose.

Messi is brilliant, but he can be a tad selfish at times.

Love the blog, but there are 400+ comments in this entry, making it difficult to read through when you miss several days. How about putting an end to this one and writing up a new entry (even if it’s very short)?

It is great that Villareal lost
to Valladolid by 0-2; I am
hoping Villlareal eventually
ended up outside the top four.
That would be great vindication for
Roman!

Kaka won the Ballon D’or. This proves in part
that winning CL is highly rated.

“Lanús es campeón del fútbol argentino.”
Congrats to Lanús, the new champions of argie football.
This is their first title in 96 years.
Very well deserved indeed.
José Sand sure has a golden future ahead.
Also congrats to Tigre for ending in second position.
These two teams plus Arsenal de Sarandí, who could become Sudamericana champions this coming wednesday, are living proof that “barrio” football is alive and kicking in Argentina, and the opportunity is there for any good team or player to take it.

What happens tonight in the southern side of Buenos Aires, I wish you all could see.
A very little club are the heroes. (Lanús).
It brings back hope to people.
They all know now that whoever deserves it, ends up with the credit.
Considering what has been going on in Il Calcio, and now in the Euro games of some eastern european countries, this is refreshing news to me.
Saludos.

sorry tobe off topic but did any one see the european final draw. you got holland, france and italy in the same group. time and time again we keep seeing these awful draws. its time for fifa to have more balanced draws. yes there must be a group of death but this is beyond that. and in every competition there is some ridiculus draw. at the copa america you had the same teams playing in the first and second round. why does fifa continue to allow this to happen.

Read closely what Messi says at the end .

Messi Thanks Moratti, But Commits To Barça

Lionel Messi has thanked Massimo Moratti after the Inter chief said he would love him to play in Italy, but insisted that he is totally committed to Barcelona.

zoom - galleria The Argentinian has been in sensational form this term and has finished third in the Ballon d’Or poll and that has attracted praise from across the worl.

Moratti heaped praise on Messi and said he would love to see him at Inter, but the 20-year-old has stated that he only wants to play for the Blaugrana.

“I want to publicly thank Massimmo Moratti for his kind words that he has said about me and it makes me proud to be recognised by a person of his stature,” he said in an interview due to be published this week in Guerin Sportivo.

“But I have Barcelona in my heart and want to stay here for a long time.”

Messi then revealed that he has no plans to take the summer of at the end of the current campaign as he wants to play for Argentina in the Olympics.

“I want to play in the Olympic Games in Beijing next year,” he stated.

Kaka: Barcelona’s Messi could’ve won Ballon d’Or
tribalfooball.com - December 03, 2007

AC Milan’s Ballon d’Or winner Kaka believes Barcelona’s Lionel Messi could have won this season’s title if his club had enjoyed a better season.
Kaka said: “The difference with Messi is that he has not won an important title this season, not the Spanish Liga nor the Champions League and that I think was a negative point against him.”

Kaka finished ahead of Messi and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo in the voting and added: “Ronaldo represents the speed and the power and Messi the ability and the control of the ball. They are young and full of talent, I hold them both in high esteem.”

Athletico will do good, if they can get there defense strengthened. I always thought thats the weak link. Check the number of times they are involved in a 3-3,3-2,4-3 etc. Just horrible.

Zaragoza is a lost case this time. I have also stopped watching there game. They have all the old horses (not by age) and a bunch of talented under achievers. You need some consistent performance throughout the year. Diego Milito had a very slow start, but at the end might finish with 15 goals.

BTW, did you guys see the Liverpool vs Porto game? It was not really a 4-1 game. And Lisandro Lopez should get a call, his header was brilliant. Though he should have buried Liverpool on the second chance.

Luciano Galleti once again had a great game. All argentines in Real Madrid is screwing their career. Not a single is a starter. Also, injured people do not recover well in Madrid, I think.

I am worried about Lionel Messi. Will Rijkard ever rest him? I have a feeling he will burn him down. Aren’t anyone concerned?

Corinthians Paulista (Brazil), one of the greatest football clubs in the world, descended to Primera B in the Brazilian league. :-(
33 million “paulistas” (people from Sao Paulo) are crying in total hopelessness.
This is the kind of event for which some people give their lives down there.
There are accusations of money laundry against MSI, the investments company of Kia Joorabchian and russian tycoon Berezovky, who broke relations with the club back when they took Mascherano and Tevez to England. Also former president Dualib who resigned just when things started to go down for the club.
Corinthians is an important football club, like say, Liverpool in England or Juventus in Italy. It’s amazing they went down to the “B” just for playing poor football.
I hope they bounce back and I hope River Plate (Arg.) bounces back too.
It’s no fun when the great teams are not present.

Ken,

Tevez could be right. Maybe Arg’s system is not really compatible with Tevez. But I strongly believe we need more practice time.

What i have always said about tevez he is not a number nine or poacher but Aguero is. Also of note that Crespo is not hardly playing for Inter because of julio Cruz playing so well. i think that Crespo should be done at the national team level and should also consider finsihing his career now at river instead of riding the bench at inter. I love Crespo but we all age and we all slow down.

Maradona Feels That Kaka Doesn’t Deserve The Ballon d’or

Argentinean legend Diego Maradona weighs in on the debate on whether Ricardo Kaka deserves the Balloon d’or, and stuck to his earlier stance.

zoom - galleria As soon as Kaka received the prestigious trophy on Sunday in Paris, a furious debate ensued questioning the merits of the Brazilian superstar receiving the award.

Though his Champions League form was great, the play-maker was practically non-existent through the Serie A season, and there have been calls from various quarters that consistency should be rewarded as opposed to a few glittering performances.

Former Argentinean superstar Diego Maradona - who had made his position clear by backing Lionel Messi - chose to stick to his guns.

“Rooney, Ronaldinho and Messi would have been the worthy winners,” he said.

“It was a tough decision but there is not much separating Kaka from those players. Some are even better.”

“I don’t know too well how the election is done but I think that Rooney is better than Kaka.

“Milan is a team that depends all the time on Kaka but that doesn’t make him the best player in the world.”

‘El Diego’ also had an opinion on the upcoming World Club Cup that pits his beloved Boca Juniors against AC Milan.

“It’s going to be a difficult match and everyone is predicting Milan to be victorious but Milan are Kaka-dependent,” he stated.

“I am not scared of Milan, I only want Boca to get to the competition in good physical condition.”

Speaking of his current favourites in football - Maradona ruled on who he feels is the pick of his fellow countrymen.

“At the moment the best three Argentinian players are Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Juan Roman Riquelme.”
