Sorin vs Veron

Well, down here in Buenos Aires just about the only item in the sporting news is the battle that transpired between Argentina’s Captain, Juanpy Sorin and ex-star, La Brujita Veron during Villareal vs Inter. Sadly, no players are talking, so it’s pure speculation in terms of what the cause of the spat might be. Fair to say that it’s fairly jarring to see two such stalwarts seriously going at it. The fact that Sorin’s mellon got cracked open in the bargain makes matters even more bizarre. Here’s my take: Veron is an ASS. I thought his head was in the wrong place before the last world cup. Since he’s almost certainly not going to be on the team this time around – he’s going to try to taint the side with his bad karma in the only way he can. This is the last time he’ll have a global audience before Argentina takes the pitch in Germany.

Sorin is a ‘give everything’ Lion, Veron is a punk. I’m disappointed that Cambiasso, Zanetti, Riquelme (who played unbelievably well), Kily, Cruz, Samuel or any of the other Argentines present on the field didn’t get in there to reduce the spectacle or OPENLY SIDE with their team Captain. Already, conspiracy happy Argentines are talking of a long standing ’split’ within the team, etc. These are the kind of ridiculous distractions that can cause a team to lose focus. For my part, I hope we’ve heard the last of La Brujita and that he just shuts the F up between now and June.

Veron wont go to the WC. Zanetti, Cambiasso and the rest of the Inter players should get along very well with Sorin and Riquelme. There shouldnt be any problem. I need to know the origin of the fight between Sorin and Veron…I know this goes a few years back.

  • Julian

Hmm this is a very curious situation. What can be the problem? Veron does have a lot of attitude, and he is like they say in Argentina “un sobrado”. This mean arrogant and too proud… Sorin is a different type of guy, he’s more of a leader. I’m glad VERON is not in the team, he didn’t do anything last WC period. Plus we have players now with more personality, character, and SKILL which supercedes VERON.

No one really knows the whole story. So how can you take sorins side just because Veron didnt produce much in the WC?? Veron has one of the sickest touches i have ever seen in my life. Theres not gonna be any distractions these guys are grown ass men and our professionals and their is a reason they are where they are at its because of the passion they have for the game. Sometimes that passion can can escalate into drama but its not a big deal. Veron is one hell of a player and if it wasnt for that injury of his back in the day i think when he played in england I would bet all of my money that he would be starting this world cup.

  • http://lol.com lol

I heard that it goes back to an old incident where Veron lended his apartment to Sorin and when Sorin gave it back it was all trashed. LOL. They obviously dislike each others but Sorin is not an angel.

  • JP

Heard the thing about the apartment too, BUT it was the other way around: Sorin rented his apartment in Italy to Veron. Who played in Italy first? – that’d give us the answer.

Anyway, apart from all that, and in response to Kris: Veron just strikes me as a Terrell Owens lite in terms of locker room effect. Again (I’ve told this story before): I remember the headlines the day before Argentina’s first WC game in J/K ‘02: ‘Veron holds press conference to protest Maradona’s ban’…I knew right then we were screwed. Further, Veron (quite apart from escalating things to a news worthy point yesterday) was clearly the aggressor with at least 3/4 dirty tackles on Sorin.

Turns out Riquelme doesn’t dig Veron very much either.

Sorin, apart from being pure ‘garra’, spends his off time reading books, smoking pot, doing yoga and otherwise laying low in Punta del Este. Everyone I’ve come across who’s met him says he’s as chill a (famous) person as they’ve ever come across.

  • http://lol.com lol

“Sorin, apart from being pure ‘garra’, spends his off time reading books, smoking pot, doing yoga and otherwise laying low in Punta del Este. ”

LOL :) If this is true then this is seriously really funny. Maybe I was wrong. when u say rented u mean lended right ? Veron was in Italy playing with Sampdoria before the 1998 WC as far as I know. Sorin was with Juventus at that time. So i guess u are right. LMAO.

Veron…my favourite playmaker ever after Riquelme. If he wasnt injured in 2002 I can guarantee u that history would have been different.

Thats why I am hoping Riquelme’s back pain doesnt interfere with his play :( Did u guys see the pain in his expression in the Inter game ? Does he make them out of pain or just regret for missing a chance..I really never could tell the difference with him lol.

  • glen

Enuff wid all this.Veron is past.Sorin is Captain. This is Riquelme’s WC. so watever their differences are, really doesn’t make a difference coz veron aint never gonna make it,however gud he was.
    Bring it on Argentina!!

  • Rune

I have always hoped Veron would be included in WC squad as a backup for riquelme and Aimar. But now I am not so sure anymore. I`ve heard a lot of rumours before about the Sorin-Veron situation, but when I saw Veron`s behaviour in the game against Villareal I got so pissed off. Looks like Veron is an ass afterall. I am totally on Sorin`s side here.
Sorin is much more a teamplayer compared to Veron. Off course he is no “angel” on the pitch, but you can`t say that about any Argie player.
Veron`s ego is far to big. This for me is the final evidence that Veron is not going to the WC. And I have now changed my mind about him, we really don`t need a player like that.
    Viva Sorin!

  • http://B619A Pugnate

You know what I disappoints me the most about Veron? Of course you don’t, which is why I will tell you. :-)

He doesn’t love Argentina nor does he care about the success of Argentina at the world cup.

I don’t care how bitter he is, he should always love his team.

6 – 12 months ago he still had hopes of coming to the national squad. Then he had statements saying he wanted Argentina to win and that we had the most talented squad etc.

For the past few months it has been assured that he won’t make it to the national team. And with that in mind he has started making statements about Argentina not having a chance etc.

Look at the rage he showed yesterday.

I am sure that he asked whatshisname to elbow Sorin.

  • Ajay

Veron best days were @ Lazio. After that he has been miserable. To be honest, I blame him for a bunch of blunders in 2002. Aimar should’ve started instead of Veron. Forget the old ‘gems’, now we have true diamonds who shine on and off the pitch. I am absolutely fine with Riquelme as he blows Veron away. And with Aimar, Lucho we have adequate midfield replacements. Riquelme will perform – you’ll see, for example his performance was exceptional in the FIFA confederations cup – sure he sucked in the final against Brazil – but guess what Pekerman surrounded him with experimental players.

  • Kris

Your right when you say Verons best days were at lazio that is because that was before he got injured and please do not say Riquelme blows Veron away because he still hasnt proven ANYTHING. Veron has been playing at the top level of soccer since I can remember. Be mad at the guy for his attitude but dont take anything away from him or his game. Wouldnt you be mad if it was the last chance in your soccer career you can physically play a world cup but werent taken so give the guy a break. And Pugnate maybe he doesnt show it but who do you think hes going to be cheering for. If you dont know you never met an argentinian before. If argentina doesnt pass in the first round are you going to point the finger at Riquelme this time. Cmon wat a joke.

  • albiceleste

No one really knows why the pair have got beef but i think this veron conspiracy is going overboard. I dont think he really wants to create trouble for the argentine squad members and everyone is making a big deal out of this. At the end Veron is not in the squad and wont be able to create rifts in the squad.

By the way who is the blogger for the argentina posts. Just wanted to make a request that you should start putting up profiles of the argentina players like euler does for brazil.
Players such as Ayala, Zanetti, Mascherano etc should get a mention.

  • http://lol.com lol

Riquelme is much better than Veron at his prime. He has proven it in Boca, Villareal and with the NT.

However Veron in his prime ( his days in Italy, some his manu games and with the NT ofcourse) was really wonderful to watch. Perfect pin point passing, long crosses, shooing accuracy and power ect..

He is doing very well Inter but he is nothing like his old self. And his character is a liability.

  • http://B619A Pugnate

You guys are right, Veron at his prime was fantastic. In fact just before the world cup I thought it would be his tournament.

  • albiceleste

Veron is always going to be that player whoe talent was never fulfilled. He had the ability but the man has got no workrate. He was given a free role in the middle of the park, coming up and down to collect the ball and delivering a killer ball. The thing that got at me was if he lost the ball he made little attempt to retrieve it again. He never gave 100%.
Everyone got fooled including fergie because he had been playing in the italian league where you have time on the ball and football is not as fast.

Some better news anyway people. If Riquelme continues producing them goods for villareal, it is likely ferguson is going to sign him this summer. Also D’alessandro is proving a fans favourite after his performances for Portsmouth. He may yet make it to the squad.

  • Debasish Dutta Roy

Good to see a point about D’Alessandro. If at all we need a backup for Riquelme, it is not Veron it is D’Alessandro. He need not start all the games but he is doing well after quite some time.

One thing that is important to me is current form. With a team like Argentina or Brazil there will never be paucity of talents, there will always be 4-5 options, specially in midfield. So pick players who are injury free and in-form. I did have D’Alessandro in my team, then took him out and now after seeing him in Portsmouth, I am back again.

Pompey fans are writing songs for D’Alessandro.

  • http://lol.com lol

Portsmouth gets very little attention in Argentina. He is almst ignored by the media.

And I dont think that Veron problem was not giving it 100%. You have to understand the difference between english and italian soccer. Veron at his best never defended…and it isnt up to him to do so. He had Simeone who covered the balls for him. At Manu Keane refused to play that role for Veron.

Riquelme doesnt even bother moving if he doesnt have the ball between his feet. I guess that makes him lazy too ? You have to understand that there are certain kind of players that are better off focusing their energy in the attack instead of wasting it by running around the ball.

  • Kris

I dont want to jump on my boy Riquelmes back but i have to defend Veron.Where has Riquelme proven it. He won in Boca ok but Boca always wins. He hasnt won anything with the NT and he hasnt won anything with VillaReal maybe he will this year but as of now he hasnt and your never gonna convince me that Riquelme at his prime is better than Veron at his prime. Do you even remember Veron at his prime? WOW is all i have to say. Its kind of sad watching him now cuz its not him. He used to take people on WHEN he had too but now nothing. And his work rate must not be that bad if hes been playing for some of the BEST clubs in the world. I see many similarities between him and Riquelme but theres no need to bash Veron.

  • http://lol.com lol

Ask any Boca fan out there. It is agreed that Riquelme >>>>Veron. Who cares about accomplishments ? Zanetti hasnt won anything in his career. I guess that makes him crap ??

  • http://none Todd Utah

If you have played futbol before you know that people that are very competitive hate each other on the field. I have fought with my best friends in pickups games and then been glad they were on my team the next game. Dont overblow what happened on the pitch. Veron will not be on the team for the the World Cup but that does not mean he sucks or is a jerk. The coach will select a team balanced with skill and speed, youth and veterans. With Riquelme we already have are slow skilled guy so why take Veron? I thought that Riquelme looked awsome but lets be honest you need to surround him with speed and hustle. Guess What? That is exactly what Pekerman will do. Messi, Aimar, those guys are fast. Balance will be the key to this World Cup and Argentina will win! Viva Argentina.

  • mAssimo

I’ll put Veron in the NT over Lucho Gonzalez any day of the week. But I agree that we have so many good players being left out of the team right now that why take one guy that can create tension in the group.

  • argiebargie

Okay this isnt a Riquelme v Veron debate. I agree Veron doesnt deserve all this criticism, but i agree on the fact other players have overtaken him.
I understand now even though veron was not giving a 100% in matches by chasing the ball all over the pitch but then neither does riquelme. Two different footballers and lets not forget riquelme is at the stage where veron was before at lazio. Veron was playing the best footabll of his career.

I emphasise my point at how other players now have overtaken veron in the NT. Lucho is one of them. A player who thoroughly deserves a place in the team let alone the squad.

As for D’alessandro, he may not be getting noticed by anyone now but if portsmouth stay up this season then their are going to strong shouts for him to go to germany. The english media are already speaking highly of him and its only a matter of time before argentine media notice.

  • Kris

Im not going to even bother cuz I dont want to bash Riquelme to support Veron. All you need to know is Veron is Top Class Soccer. Probably the smartest player on the field in almost every game.

  • http://B619A Pugnate

On a different note, any news on Messi? How is his recovery coming along?

  • http://xxxxx.asasd.com fx

Veron is a wonderfull player, but he is a crazy man. In Argentina they call him “la brujita” … Sorin have a lot of win´dress

  • argiebargie

It seems like Veron will have another of his cpmpatriots playing alongside him next season. Internazionale have targeted Lucho to strengthen their midfield. Apparently inters scouts have brought back glowing reports and mancini is adamant they get their man.

I hope he doesnt go. I’d rather he stay in portugal playing for a club he will only get better at whereas inter will use him then keep him on the bench. I really cannot see him fitting in at inter. Portugals league may not be as recognised as the italian league but it is full of technically gifted players from which lucho will improve. He would benefit more moving to spain.

  • Rune

I have seen lots of people on this list mentioning that Zanetti has never won anything.
I just want to say that that is not true! He won the Uefa cup with Inter back in 98, I think it was. He even scored an incredible goal in the final. A stunning long range shot. It`s not the biggest thing to win, but at least it`s something.

  • Rune

By the way; what does `garra` mean?

  • argiebargie

He deserves a world cup medal after the service he has given argentina. Thats another incentive, because this will be his last chance in a world cup and im sure he will retire maybe after copa america. We should create a profile of him for others to see and comment.

The greatest right wingback argentina have ever had.

  • http://lol.com lol

correction: The greatest wingback in modern football.

A player of the class of Zanetti deserves MUCh more than a uefa cup. He should be world champion. I hope he will this year.

I havent seen any player as loyal as Zanetti, he could have just asked for a move and went to another club where he could have tasted success. But he is just class.

  • http://argentina.worldcupblog.org Kris

If you understand spanish if not get a translator. this is basically what happened and Sorins comments afterwards.

  • http://argentina.worldcupblog.org Kris
  • JP

Rune: ‘garra’ means ‘balls’, ’steel’, ‘ice in the veins’, ‘toughness’ – something like that…

Kris: great vid, but it doesn’t show when Kily has to grab Veron’s elbow, post game, so that he doesn’t stop and interrupt another TV interview Sorin was doing later. You can see (in this other video) Veron turning his head and puteando Sorin while he’s interviewing…

  • argiebargie

This will shed more light on Sorin and veron.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/4893630.stm

  • argiebargie

Veron doesn’t deserve the criticism some people are placing on him. He simply thinks Sorin is acting like a big man because of the captaincy. I for one believe Ayala should have the armband as does Veron but Sorin has no intention giving in.

If you look at the article in detail it says that veron has been planning on getting his own back for weeks on Sorin but made a lousy attempt of this.

I can detect a hint of sour grapes from veron bcause he wanted to be in the argentina squad this year but has no chance now. The majority of the players dont want Sorin as captain and that is the reason why Veron decided to provoke him.

  • Fill

Actually, that BBC article is wrong in a couple of ways. Firstly, it states that Veron and Sorin have been unable to share a drssing room since Sorin was made captain, BUT they actually haven’t been on the national team together since Sorin was made captain.
Also, it’s just suggested that Veron ‘waited and waited’ for the game to strike at Sorin.
Another thing, I doubt Crespo would object to Sorin’s captaincy; the two are great friends from their River days and they often share a room on national duty.
I guess Ayala may be annoyed though, but then Pekerman needed a captain who was guaranteed to start every game: Ayala is old and injury prone (still a great player and starter when fit, though). Pekerman obviously saw this in Sorin.
Let’s not dress this up: Veron attacked Sorin because he is angry at not going to the World Cup and sees Sorin as someone stopping him. That’s it.
Has criticism been too much on Veron? Sure. But lets not make him a hero to the cause all of a sudden.

  • argiebargie

I’ve read another article which says Sorin blamed Veron’s lazy attitude for Argentinas shock early exit at the last world cup. The row between the pair continued in argentina where they fear the team are split as none of inters argentine players-cambiasso,cruz,kily, and javier zanetti showed sorin any sympathy.

I knew veron and sorin were squabbling throughout the game but i didnt know veron threw punches at him during half time. The article says while sorin was being intervieved, not only did veron throw insults as you guys have mentioned, but also had to be restrained from attacking him again.

This is the last thing we need going into the world cup. I had no idea Sorin was so unpopular with his argentine teammates. I hope they sort their differences out because veron isnt in the squad to create more arguements. I do reckon veron will try to encourage his team mates at inter to make it as difficult for sorin as possible at the world cup but i hope they ignore him.

  • Rune

What a mess this is! I thought all the players(apart from Veron)did like Sorin. Personally I would like Zanetti to be the captain, but when Pekerman chose Sorin I thought this was the players choice as well.
All this does not sound good to me. Like argiebargie says, this is the last thing we need going into the world cup.

  • http://lol.com lol

I never thought that it was THAT big of deal being the captain. I dont think our player are that immature and I dont think that Veron was fighting over that. Veron has some clear personal issues with Sorin. He didnt attack him because of some stupid Captain issues. I am sure that guys like Crespo, Ayala and Zanetti are professional enough to respect Sorin on and off the field. I know that Crespo is a good friend of Sorin, so is Ayala. Zanetti might be on Veron’s side since Pekerman didnt confirm him as a starter yet ( WTF pekerman :| ) but the guy is the most professional and mature player out there so I doubt there will be a problem.

The rest of the team are part of 2 generations with youngsters like Messi, Tevez, mascherano, lucho gonzalez and maybe Aguero who have no reason not to respect Sorin. The other generation is Cambiasso, Heinze, Demechelis who all respect him as well. Cambiasso actually tried to calm Veron down.

So really it all comes down to personal issues. Our players arent stupid babies fighting over an armband.

  • argiebargie

Maybe it isnt the armband directly but im sure it is a small part of the whole picture.

Ive now heard Sorin accused Veron of being lazy and costing argentina dearly in the last world cup. Now that would have pissed veron off. Sorin lays the blame on veron entirely as he was our playmaker last world cup and failed to perform.

Veron wanted revenge for sure in that game and this is going to unsettle the squad big time now.

Worse thing is no one tried to break things apart between the pair during the match which shows they were either happy enough for veron to continue bashing sorin or they couldnt be bothered to do nothing. The first sounds more believable.

Veron also believes Sorin influences Pekerman and has a big say on who is selected for the National squad. This is why he reckons he is not getting picked by argentina. Sorin denies this and says Pekerman chooses squad not me.

Why on earth are they clowning around now for on the eve of a world cup. This is getting beyond joke.I suspect this is n’t the last we’ve heard from veron either.

  • http://lol.com lol

I think we are blowing things out of proportion here. The issue is with Veron only. The rest of the team will be united for the WC.

  • argiebargie

I agree, it is veron that is creating problems but you also feel he will try to unsettle others namely his argentine team mates at inter. Do you understand the captain problem now. Veron is angry at Sorin because he thinks he is blocking his way into the squad and is now sitting happily at the top of the tree with captains armband. It is pissing him off that Pekerman rates him so highly. I hope everyone unites when the wc comes.
I agree with Fill as well. Don’t woryy Rune, hopefully everything will work out.

  • http://lol.com lol

GOOD NEWS: HEINZE WILL PLAY SOON. Make a new entry about it :) This is exellent news.

  • mightie

why is veron bein hated 2day? is it coz he is not serving national team currently… Cmon pple do not forget wat he was earlier, wit him argentina defeated soccer powerhouses(england, germany, italy, brazil, spain, etc) something not happening today and of course he shld b blamed for the wc02 debacle along wit every other stars of the team… if he is irritated and frustated its just for the love of argentina, lets imagine batistuta not bein selected for his last wc02 what would hav been his condition, his fans condition & worlds (he has been loved worldwide)… be fare guyz as long as v dont know the truth, i hope the argentine camp remain free from such tensions & controveries for the worldcup. all the best to the argies!

  • serie_a

    Ok guys look.

Veron at one stage was the BEST midfielder in the world. Why do you think Real Madrid offered Lazio £40m in the late 90’s? Veron was THAT good that Lazio said piss off to Real.

As for now, yes we all know Veron is getting on a bit, BUT he still has awesome technique, and he can still play an amazing ball from nowhere. I have never seen a player use the outside of his foot to such a good extent as Veron. I’m not saying at his age Veron should start every game, but he’s EASILY good enough to get into the squad. The man just oozes talent. What a genius.

As for Sorin – he may be a battler, but he’s not a very technical player. I don’t know how he is captain above Zanetti. Zanetti is the most experienced and is a better player than Sorin. So how he is not captain beggers belief.

The truth is, Pekerman is an arrogant bastard. Diego Maradona is the best ever player, and if Pekerman had any shame, any respect, he would listen to Diego and thus pick Veron. Maradona is in a much better position to judge players than Pekerman thankyou very much.

So for all those anti-Veron ignoramuses out there, shut up and admit Maradona is a better judge of who’s good at football than you are.

    Enough said.

Veron…??how dare u say he is a good player…the land where more sklillful boyz born…Argentina..Veron is the only player who dont have any skill…he really is a waste..what he did in 2002 world cup?what is his contributions for manchester united and chelsea?Absolutely nothing..How can u compare riquelme with veron?veron is nothing, null infront of requelme. And its very shame to have a fight with a team mate(sorin)..very poor thing and shame…that too made in front of a big crowd…
