Sorin vs Veron

April 5th, 2006 | By: JP | 51 Comments »

Well, down here in Buenos Aires just about the only item in the sporting news is the battle that transpired between Argentina’s Captain, Juanpy Sorin and ex-star, La Brujita Veron during Villareal vs Inter. Sadly, no players are talking, so it’s pure speculation in terms of what the cause of the spat might be. Fair to say that it’s fairly jarring to see two such stalwarts seriously going at it. The fact that Sorin’s mellon got cracked open in the bargain makes matters even more bizarre. Here’s my take: Veron is an ASS. I thought his head was in the wrong place before the last world cup. Since he’s almost certainly not going to be on the team this time around - he’s going to try to taint the side with his bad karma in the only way he can. This is the last time he’ll have a global audience before Argentina takes the pitch in Germany.

Sorin is a ‘give everything’ Lion, Veron is a punk. I’m disappointed that Cambiasso, Zanetti, Riquelme (who played unbelievably well), Kily, Cruz, Samuel or any of the other Argentines present on the field didn’t get in there to reduce the spectacle or OPENLY SIDE with their team Captain. Already, conspiracy happy Argentines are talking of a long standing ’split’ within the team, etc. These are the kind of ridiculous distractions that can cause a team to lose focus. For my part, I hope we’ve heard the last of La Brujita and that he just shuts the F up between now and June.

It seems like Veron will have another of his cpmpatriots playing alongside him next season. Internazionale have targeted Lucho to strengthen their midfield. Apparently inters scouts have brought back glowing reports and mancini is adamant they get their man.

I hope he doesnt go. I’d rather he stay in portugal playing for a club he will only get better at whereas inter will use him then keep him on the bench. I really cannot see him fitting in at inter. Portugals league may not be as recognised as the italian league but it is full of technically gifted players from which lucho will improve. He would benefit more moving to spain.

I have seen lots of people on this list mentioning that Zanetti has never won anything.
I just want to say that that is not true! He won the Uefa cup with Inter back in 98, I think it was. He even scored an incredible goal in the final. A stunning long range shot. It`s not the biggest thing to win, but at least it`s something.

He deserves a world cup medal after the service he has given argentina. Thats another incentive, because this will be his last chance in a world cup and im sure he will retire maybe after copa america. We should create a profile of him for others to see and comment.

The greatest right wingback argentina have ever had.

correction: The greatest wingback in modern football.

A player of the class of Zanetti deserves MUCh more than a uefa cup. He should be world champion. I hope he will this year.

I havent seen any player as loyal as Zanetti, he could have just asked for a move and went to another club where he could have tasted success. But he is just class.

Rune: ‘garra’ means ‘balls’, ’steel’, ‘ice in the veins’, ‘toughness’ - something like that…

Kris: great vid, but it doesn’t show when Kily has to grab Veron’s elbow, post game, so that he doesn’t stop and interrupt another TV interview Sorin was doing later. You can see (in this other video) Veron turning his head and puteando Sorin while he’s interviewing…

Veron doesn’t deserve the criticism some people are placing on him. He simply thinks Sorin is acting like a big man because of the captaincy. I for one believe Ayala should have the armband as does Veron but Sorin has no intention giving in.

If you look at the article in detail it says that veron has been planning on getting his own back for weeks on Sorin but made a lousy attempt of this.

I can detect a hint of sour grapes from veron bcause he wanted to be in the argentina squad this year but has no chance now. The majority of the players dont want Sorin as captain and that is the reason why Veron decided to provoke him.

Actually, that BBC article is wrong in a couple of ways. Firstly, it states that Veron and Sorin have been unable to share a drssing room since Sorin was made captain, BUT they actually haven’t been on the national team together since Sorin was made captain.
Also, it’s just suggested that Veron ‘waited and waited’ for the game to strike at Sorin.
Another thing, I doubt Crespo would object to Sorin’s captaincy; the two are great friends from their River days and they often share a room on national duty.
I guess Ayala may be annoyed though, but then Pekerman needed a captain who was guaranteed to start every game: Ayala is old and injury prone (still a great player and starter when fit, though). Pekerman obviously saw this in Sorin.
Let’s not dress this up: Veron attacked Sorin because he is angry at not going to the World Cup and sees Sorin as someone stopping him. That’s it.
Has criticism been too much on Veron? Sure. But lets not make him a hero to the cause all of a sudden.

I’ve read another article which says Sorin blamed Veron’s lazy attitude for Argentinas shock early exit at the last world cup. The row between the pair continued in argentina where they fear the team are split as none of inters argentine players-cambiasso,cruz,kily, and javier zanetti showed sorin any sympathy.

I knew veron and sorin were squabbling throughout the game but i didnt know veron threw punches at him during half time. The article says while sorin was being intervieved, not only did veron throw insults as you guys have mentioned, but also had to be restrained from attacking him again.

This is the last thing we need going into the world cup. I had no idea Sorin was so unpopular with his argentine teammates. I hope they sort their differences out because veron isnt in the squad to create more arguements. I do reckon veron will try to encourage his team mates at inter to make it as difficult for sorin as possible at the world cup but i hope they ignore him.

What a mess this is! I thought all the players(apart from Veron)did like Sorin. Personally I would like Zanetti to be the captain, but when Pekerman chose Sorin I thought this was the players choice as well.
All this does not sound good to me. Like argiebargie says, this is the last thing we need going into the world cup.

I never thought that it was THAT big of deal being the captain. I dont think our player are that immature and I dont think that Veron was fighting over that. Veron has some clear personal issues with Sorin. He didnt attack him because of some stupid Captain issues. I am sure that guys like Crespo, Ayala and Zanetti are professional enough to respect Sorin on and off the field. I know that Crespo is a good friend of Sorin, so is Ayala. Zanetti might be on Veron’s side since Pekerman didnt confirm him as a starter yet ( WTF pekerman :|) but the guy is the most professional and mature player out there so I doubt there will be a problem.

The rest of the team are part of 2 generations with youngsters like Messi, Tevez, mascherano, lucho gonzalez and maybe Aguero who have no reason not to respect Sorin. The other generation is Cambiasso, Heinze, Demechelis who all respect him as well. Cambiasso actually tried to calm Veron down.

So really it all comes down to personal issues. Our players arent stupid babies fighting over an armband.

Maybe it isnt the armband directly but im sure it is a small part of the whole picture.

Ive now heard Sorin accused Veron of being lazy and costing argentina dearly in the last world cup. Now that would have pissed veron off. Sorin lays the blame on veron entirely as he was our playmaker last world cup and failed to perform.

Veron wanted revenge for sure in that game and this is going to unsettle the squad big time now.

Worse thing is no one tried to break things apart between the pair during the match which shows they were either happy enough for veron to continue bashing sorin or they couldnt be bothered to do nothing. The first sounds more believable.

Veron also believes Sorin influences Pekerman and has a big say on who is selected for the National squad. This is why he reckons he is not getting picked by argentina. Sorin denies this and says Pekerman chooses squad not me.

Why on earth are they clowning around now for on the eve of a world cup. This is getting beyond joke.I suspect this is n’t the last we’ve heard from veron either.

I think we are blowing things out of proportion here. The issue is with Veron only. The rest of the team will be united for the WC.

I agree, it is veron that is creating problems but you also feel he will try to unsettle others namely his argentine team mates at inter. Do you understand the captain problem now. Veron is angry at Sorin because he thinks he is blocking his way into the squad and is now sitting happily at the top of the tree with captains armband. It is pissing him off that Pekerman rates him so highly. I hope everyone unites when the wc comes.
I agree with Fill as well. Don’t woryy Rune, hopefully everything will work out.

why is veron bein hated 2day? is it coz he is not serving national team currently… Cmon pple do not forget wat he was earlier, wit him argentina defeated soccer powerhouses(england, germany, italy, brazil, spain, etc) something not happening today and of course he shld b blamed for the wc02 debacle along wit every other stars of the team… if he is irritated and frustated its just for the love of argentina, lets imagine batistuta not bein selected for his last wc02 what would hav been his condition, his fans condition & worlds (he has been loved worldwide)… be fare guyz as long as v dont know the truth, i hope the argentine camp remain free from such tensions & controveries for the worldcup. all the best to the argies!

Ok guys look.

Veron at one stage was the BEST midfielder in the world. Why do you think Real Madrid offered Lazio £40m in the late 90’s? Veron was THAT good that Lazio said piss off to Real.

As for now, yes we all know Veron is getting on a bit, BUT he still has awesome technique, and he can still play an amazing ball from nowhere. I have never seen a player use the outside of his foot to such a good extent as Veron. I’m not saying at his age Veron should start every game, but he’s EASILY good enough to get into the squad. The man just oozes talent. What a genius.

As for Sorin - he may be a battler, but he’s not a very technical player. I don’t know how he is captain above Zanetti. Zanetti is the most experienced and is a better player than Sorin. So how he is not captain beggers belief.

The truth is, Pekerman is an arrogant bastard. Diego Maradona is the best ever player, and if Pekerman had any shame, any respect, he would listen to Diego and thus pick Veron. Maradona is in a much better position to judge players than Pekerman thankyou very much.

So for all those anti-Veron ignoramuses out there, shut up and admit Maradona is a better judge of who’s good at football than you are.

Enough said.
