Greetings everyone. I’m happy to report that recently I signed on as a contributing editor for the Argentina World Cup blog. As we make our way through the FIFA World Cup qualifiers on route to South Africa, I hope you’ll check back often for all the latest news and features about el albiceleste. So if you have any ideas about what you want to see here, please let me know.

I’m a lifelong Chicagoan, but have lived in Buenos Aires, and hopefully will return one day. You can catch my other blog following my favorite club team, River Plate, on The Offside.

Chau chau,

Christian Reyes

All, this is the champions league weekend again. There will be 16 teams that will go into 2nd round. Some teams are already certain and some are not. I did a quick analysis of which are the 16 teams to go forward. Here is a snapshot of the same

A – Porto & Liverpool
B – Chelsea & RBK
C – RM & Olympiakos
D – Milan & Celtic
E – Bar & Lyon
F – MU & Roma
G – INT & FEN
H – SEV & ARS

Now the next thing that comes to my mind is how many of these 16 has Argentine player in it and how important are those players to the team? Or in other words, how many starters (if not injured or suspended) and their team depend on them. Hence the next round of analysis.

POR – Has 3 argentines in the team. Lisandro Lopez and Lucho are absolute critical to Porto. Marianno Gonzalez is not. Not very bad for the players. Not very good considering Porto is really not a serious contender for the title. They are a good team but not a european power as such (not Barcelona, Man Utd, Real Madrid, Milan etc.)

LIV – Javier Mascherano. Absolutely critical in the plans of Liverpool, is a sure starter and is very much a key factor for the success of Liverpoo. Very good again.

RM – Has 4. Saviola, Gago, Higuain & Heinze. None important to the team. Maybe Heinze to a little extent and would have played if he was not injured. Gago plays sometimes, but he is not as important to RM as Cambiasso for Inter or Mascherano for Liverpool.

OLY – I love Luciano Galletti. I always did. He is a smashing guy. Probably he will never play for Argentina. But boy his team depends on him. But again Olympiakos is no power at all. They did great this time. BTW, a day when Riquelme is not working, I would love to play 2 number 5s in the middle and set 2 wingers, no enganche and may be throw in Luciano Galletti for 15-20 mins.

BAR – Messi and Milito. No need to say more. Great!!!

MU – Tevez. He is getting important every day. A big positive.

INT – They have 7. Samuel, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Burdisso, Crespo, Cruz, Solari. Am I missing anyone. Perhaps 3/4 will always be on the pitch, with Zanetti and Cambiasso automatic starter. Walter Samuel is doing great this year and Cruz is always sharp. Just unfortunate and getting old.

That leaves us 7 teams out of 16 teams with some players in them and you can see how many are important. What do you guys feel.

Well done it looks like Rmadrid and Liverpool are through and I disagree on Porto as they have won there group and with a good draw cold easliy be through to the round of 8 and maybe more. Dont discount them as not being a factor.

i am bit dissapointed that lazio is out. this team was such a fantastic team several years ago. but for some strange reason all their money just disapeared. i hope with the money they made from this cl they will buy some star players. i think they have the fewest international players of all the 32 cl teams.

Boca played better with ten men but were lucky with that shot that hit the post. But Boca were also denied an obvious penalty imo.

Fiorentina threaten Genoa bid for Banfield’s Maidana
tribalfooball.com – December 11, 2007

Fiorentina are threatening Genoa’s bid for Banfield attacking midfielder Cristian Maidana.

Maidana is expected to move to Italy next month with Genoa offering £3 million to take possession of 60 per cent of the attacking midfielder’s registration.

Fiorentina president Andrea Della Valle has also made contact with Maidana’s sponsors this week.
