Risky Riquelme?

June 13th, 2006 | By: Kris | 67 Comments »

First let me start by saying that Riquelme made a Godly pass to Saviola and showed why he is a big threat to opponents. But as I was watching I realize why Argentina has to play with 3 defenders. And basically why Zanetti wasnt taken. It is because of Riquelme and basically he is a 3rd forward not playing any defense. I personally like Riquelme but his “game” is the reason for our entire formation basically. My question is, is he really worth it? I love his game because he didnt conform and become a track runner like everyone else but Pekerman conformed to play around him. Should Argentina sacrifice many other options to fulfill Riquelmes needs?

One last thing after that pass he made to Saviola he shouldve taken off his shoes and walked to the hotel room..Pure Class…

No one is doubting that Riquelme in a matter of seconds can change an entire game if its close but a #10 exspecially from Argentina must have more responsibility than just that and besides those seconds you have too continue to lead your team. Because after the first round this tournament becomes elimination so 1 bad game and you are out and Riquelme is known to disappear.

No one is doubting that Riquelme can play its just some of us think Aimar can do a better job without sacrificing formations and other players.

man stfu already.

“You cannot compare Riquelme to Ronnie because he is one of the best players ever and Riquelme is not even close, not to say Aimar is”

I laugh at this statement. It is widely recognised that Riquelme is the second best player in the world and in spain. Some argue that he is the best.

AIMAR IS NOT A 90 MINUTE PLAYER

I belive that that there are problems with Riquelme.I believe that the team plays better with an Aimar/Messi/Tevez combo. But you can’t disregard Riquelme, plus if Roman knows he will only play for 60 minutes then hewill go all out and not try to ace himself. Depending on the result you make your adjustments at that point. To win this world cup it will depend alot on coaching and tactics. Peckerman had it right when he said we have seven finals and we take them one at a time!Plus Aimar plays better as a sub. By the time Messi is fit he will replace Saviola. So Tevez and Aimar will be subs with one to spare.

I like this topic.
If Kempes can criticize Riquelme, so can we. And there is enough to criticize.
Riquelme disappeared off the field during the last 25 minutes of the match. The guy is out of shape. He should be subbed out much sooner. But it sucks if you have to automatically waste one of your subs every game!
He never defends. We had to have a forward, Saviola, come back and do Riquelme’s defending for him! Imagine that, getting tired even when you don’t have to defend.

I hope Pekerman is not so obsessed as not to see reality.
Don’t get me wrong, JRR is good and his pass to Saviola was awesome, but I and others have our doubts.

“Whatever dude, I saw Aimar come on in the first game and he did nothing.”

Of course not, he was in the field for about 34.8 seconds!

Duhh

who said Aimar is not a 90 minute player. Obviously you havent watched him play often. And the best part about him is he will put the team on his shoulders when they need to chase the game for example if they are down 1-0.

Riquelme Rules!!!

Read this:
BRA coach wish they had one like Roman!!!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/teams/argentina/5008070.stm

This debate is nonsense! We all know Roman is a different type of player. He is no Maradona, and he is no Ronaldinho, even he is no Messi. But so what!!!???
This comparison is sickening. He is Roman! And we are blessed to have him!!!

Go Roman!!!
GO ARGENTINA!!!

PPL who are saying Rommy is not good are ignorant and have no clue what middfielders are all about. They want him to be replaced with aimar and messi …Bull Shitt..these players never proved anything yet, these players are good for subs after 70th minute and thats it. But to take Rommy just to replace him with other names cuz they are more likable is very ignorant, this will not win us the WC. Shut ur stupid mouths about Rommy cuz he is a class act and pure talent who can pass so others can score. I don’t wanna see another VERON or any other fancy name who is gonna dribble and run in circles for 2 hours and gives us no scores. I wanna see us effective, score and win…… Shut the fuck up about Rommy being not good, because you sound so stupid and fucking ignorant.

ROMAN designed three goals and may be more in the first game, WTF do you want more, why do u still fucking whine…Oh yeah you wanted someone else to have started so they can fucking lose, we would have lost had Aimar started or anyone else. What is this shitt about him being slow, its not a marathon, he plays just the way we need to play to be able to win, he speeds the tempo up when he feels that we need to…He is a smart player, unlike his stupid critics who have nothing better to do other than bash the guy.

Tanvir :
You said a sily thing:
“Aimar did not nothing in the first game”
It’s normal, Aimar played 1 or 2 minutes !

I agree Riquelme is good, but he should not play the whole game, he should be subbed by AIMAR at the 60th or 70th minutes EACH game because Riquelme is not able to play 100% 90minutes, moreover Aimar would bring a new blow.
In fact we don’t complain about Roman game, but about the way he’s used: too much used althoug there are players who can show different things.

Yes, Rom should be replaced at the 70th minute and earlier if he is having a bad game, note that there was a lot of talk about opponents may want to mark him with two players i.e double team… But more players should be replaced around 70th minute in our squad anyways, not just roman. Messi/Tevez/aimar should get some playing time after 70th minute I hope, becasue they provide us with a burst of energy that it seems we need becasue the first unit runs out of gas at that point in time.
If we have depth as a strength, we should use it to our advantage, other wise whats the point?

The big arguement is that when argentina is winning then Riquelme is the peoples hero and when we lose he will be blamed alongside a host of other players for not giving his best.

I think Riquelme is skillful and a master at passing. We need him in certain games for definite but where Pekerman has to draw the line is that the team is too dependent on him.

The fact he has been made a star in the game against Ivory Coast is also largely due to Mascherano, Sorin, Heinze, Ayala who worked their socks off. They defend, win the ball and then pass to Riquelme.

I hate the fact that other teams can take him out of the game and try to limit our attack. This is wrong and in my view if we struggle i am tempted by bringing Aimar, Messi/Tevez on which gives the attack a different dimension. Pekerman has done a similar thing against Angola and it looks a fantastic option.

We have the squad to make it out of the group but I do believe we will need Messi, Tevez to give us the edge against other opponents.

Riquelme is a major piece of the puzzle that will reach the world cup final.

Well said ArgieBargie….Rommy is the engine of the team, but we should not be too dependent on him, he also might have a bad game..we need to have other options ready to go on the spot..The other unit Messi/aimar/Tevez sounds pretty good for a sub in the second half…We definitly need this unit to play to advance and go far. This unit emphasizes the youthful element of our team as well as uptemo and burst of energy that can freeze opponents in the second half and may eventually get us pass the hump.

I am not sure who said this:”Argentina plays football as a duty, however Brazil have fun while playing it….” I think that is the missing element in our team…We are supposed to go out there and have fun with the ball not to worry about other factors…Players should not feel any kind of external pressure to play..

Riquelme , the footballer that uses
his brains the most .
Other players are better at dribbling , beating defenders one on one , and many run faster but
no one , no team but Argentina has a player who can play that kind of perfect pass to Saviola - right angle , right strength , right speed , right timing , the ball escaping all defenders , the offside trap , and reaching Saviola before the IC goalkeeper . Riquelme , the genius , who does not even need to run or beat defenders or carry the ball to kill the opponent

Riquelme is at the moment the best playmeker. Maybe Ronaldinho is more famous but at the moment he is doing well, and our Riquelme is much more better. He is THE ONE, the ONLY ONE!

I think most of us would agree that riquelme is a brilliant playmaker. But the issue that bothers me and bothers most of our argentinian fans, is that after the 70th minute or so, he tends to run out of gas, and thats when Aimar needs to come in, not in the 88th minute like the first game with IC. Bringing our spectacular subs a little early may pay dividends and increase our chances to score more in a very critical time in the game.

LMFAO How dare you say that Riquelme is nothing compared to Ronaldinho and hes too slow. Riquelme has the brains, talent and final product and who needs pace and strength when you have that. He is the last of a dying breed and although his and ronnies game are different you’ll see that for club Riquelme scores more than ronaldinho and creates more goals. Bur Ronaldinhos dribbling is awesome and his deadball play is also good but not better than Riquelme. Personally i would rather have Ronnie in my team than Riquelme but i think its a close call between the two. No doubt though that they are both sublime

You must be brainwashed by those Joga Bonita commercial BS. :-)

Anyway, Roman along with Zidane were the
gems of this World Cup - and his presence
is the only reason for me to follow Villareal’s
games.
