Riquelme: Messi is Better than Rooney

March 13th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 44 Comments »

Juan Roman Riquelme is like me in that he thinks that Lionel Messi is going to have a huge World Cup and that he is going to outperform England’s young gun Wayne Rooney.

“Rooney is a very good young player but he is not Lionel Messi. He (Messi) will shine at the World Cup because he is showing great form this season and playing great football. He is different to the rest,” Riquelme said.

Let’s hope that Riquelme is spot on.

Dido dont kid YOURSELF. Rooney may well be englands biggest source of goals but its going to be Messi using his magic to take on defences and providing assists. I ‘ve got nothing against Rooney but Messi is going to stamp his authority come June.

If Rooney has his advatages in ability then so does Messi and i hope the two countries meet- It will be by far the best game in the world cup.

That’s a really silly matter. Messi is great while Rooney is nobody. Kig said it well: Tevez is the real deal, otherwise he would not be playing in Brazilian main league.

Forget Rooney! If the South American teams play all they know, we will have the greatest final ever: Brazil vs Argentina.

It was fun to see the Europeans out of the final match in German soil.

Rooney and Messi both gonna do damage in the world cup. Who will destroy their opponents more we will find out soon enough.

As this blog is argentinian i will just take the chance to big up Argentinas most exciting arrival.

Euler your right, South Americans all the way.

Theirs only one MESSI, MESSI, MESSI.

Since im not South American, i will inform you guys that a South American team will NOT win the world cup. Especially if the players are as cocky as you lot!

No Andre its not cocky of us to feel we got a chance to make it in this world cup. We proud of our team and are going to back them all the way. Hmmmmmm….you are ruling argentina out and brazil. Thats just plain ignorance and do i detect a hint of sour grapes against brazil. By the way the blog is about who is a better player, messi or rooney not Argentina gonna kick everyones ass because every other team is crap.

Good day to you

I didnt rule out Brazil or Argentina. I just thought that i was entitled to give my opinion. I based this on past WC’s and think that whenever there is too much hype about a team doing well, the opposite happens. And no O’higgins, im not ignorant. Its called gut feeling. Anyway, Rooney will shine in the WC.

My gut feeling tells me that its going to be an open world cup ,anyone of 7-8 teams can win it. You will realise most of the hype is on the brazilians. The world media are not looking as much at the argentinians. Brazil are too sick and am mesmerized with their football but it gets more difficult trying to defend your crown. Rooney will shine at the world cup no doubt but so will our star, Messi.

argiebargie,

You speak wise words. Firstly everyone relax. All friends here. :)

I agree with argiebargie on the following:

1. Respect thy opponents. Roony and Messi are both magnficient. I’d say Messi has more class and skill but Roony can score goals more rapidly which counts a lot obviously.

2. The Argentinian media (and not this blog) put constant pressure on any new talent by instantly comparing them to the great one, Maradona.

I think it is silly. It reminds me of cricket and the English media falsely putting Botham’s crown on every new young allrounder, though Flintoff is the real deal.

But back to football. Just from the top of my head I am going to list the players that the media has called the next Maradona:

1. Ortega
2. Riquelme
3. De’alesandro
4. Aimar
5. Messi

I agree that Messi is the most likely to succeed Maradona but lets take it one step at a time.

Also Tevez is fantastic. Don’t discount him.

But like argiebargie says, don’t disrespect your opponents. I am not fond of the English team but even I admit that Roony is magnificent.

Is Messi better than Rooney? Is this a serious question, Sergio Aguero is better than Rooney and he is only 17. Don’t get me wrong, Rooney is a very talented player, but Messi is in a different class entirely, he is in a league above Rooney.

I agree with Leon. Messi is in the Ronaldinho class. Well at least almost there! He has passion, that’s the problem these days, everything is so technical, what happened to taking risks? I have a feeling Messi will make a mess this WC… mark my words…

Both players have my permission to set this world cup on fire. Rooney can lead englands assault and Messi will do his thing for argentina. These two are going to be the young guns to watch. Messi and Ronaldinho are good friends and with friends like that the world is Messi’s oyster.
The english press may get to rooney-one minute your a hero on the backpage of a newspaper and the next your on the front page involved in some sex scandal. Or is that sven im thinking about……

LOL - yeah who is sven. Aguero better than rooney?? Thats over stepping the mark. I dont know much about Aguero and if he is as good as ive heard then he should be in the squad. I know he plays for independiente but hez got to prove himself in Europe first to be compared with anyone. Is he like rooney, an eye for goal or more skillful like Messi??

Alan,

Aguero is a bull of a player, often compared to Romario, he has a similar physique. He is only 17, made his debut aged 15, but everyone is raving about him with Real Madrid and Barca battling it out for his signature. Many claim he is even more talented than Messi. However, I agree with you he has to play in europe before he can be truly judged, but by all accounts the kid is the real deal and not just hype.

I think ‘better’ is measured by which one you’d choose for your side. I’d certainly choose a Messi over a Rooney, I’d choose Aguero over Rooney. Interestingly, I’d choose Rooney over Crespo. Rooney - Tevez, I’d flip a coin.

On the South American Champion in 2006 issue above; here’s the most relevant fact: Since 1978, there’s only been ONE FINAL that didn’t include either Argentina or Brazil. Each have made it to 3 finals, collectively 6 out of 7. I’d say the odds are Tremendously in favor of one of the two making it. Add in the current fundamentals of each team, and I’d say it’s a very safe bet.

In my opinion, Messi is a better player than Rooney overall. But I have to admit, enen though it hurts, that Rooney is a better goalscorer. That is pretty important. I am wondering; who will score the goals for Argentina? Crespo is not as good as before, and Messi is no natural goalscorer.Tevez? I love him, but I am not shure if he is the player we can trust will score a lot of goals this WC. We need a natural goalscorer. I can not see him anywhere at the moment…

2 completely different players..
First Rooney is a BULL.. He plays like an Argentinian…”balls Out”..He defends he scores he creates.Rooney beats people with power

Second- Messi is crazy talented and has the potential to be the best player in the world. Messi beats defenders thru speed skill and hes a smart lil bastrd..

All you can say now about the 2 is that Messi is more SKILLFUL or TALENTED than Rooney..But that doesnt take anything away from Rooneys game..

We will see which type of game will be more successful…

I agree with Pugnate’s comments that yes I think ever since the 1995 world youth tournament when Marcelo Gallardo produced some stunting individual play the label of the next Maradona has been in vogue ever since.

Now over the years they have been alot of hot and cold and pretenders.

But if you want to say Messi is better than Rooney or vice versa then just let me firstly point out a few things.

Rooney made his debut when he was 16, after his glorious form and performance in Euro 2004 not only did people start to take notice but the lovely British media beefed it up to labeling him England’s answer to Pele. Now whether or not that’s abit overrated is far be it from me to suggest that he isn’t.

However, Messi rise to prominence really came when he single handly destroyed his opposition with some sublime performance and won Argentina the youth cup. Thus, Maradona then spoke of his genius and then labeling him a nature successor of his throne.

Now, Messi in some respect showed his lead as being the “the better player” with his extraordinary performance against Chelsea and although, Rooney has had some great performances as well with Man Utd.

Overall, the two are very different type of players and I think one thing has to be said is that the style of play they both have suits their respective leagues they play in as Rooney is more of a physical type of player than Messi who is technically more creative.

Now as to who is better is very subjective and as to who will conquer only time will tell!

I am Irish but love Argentine football and was a massive supporter of theirs during the World Cup. I am still reeling at the manner of their exit to that German team of pub league players. It is not the Argentine way to try and defend a lead, not to mention the stupidity of Pekerman’s decision to withdraw Riquelme and not use Messi. I really hope that that same bunch of players gets a chance to have another go at things in South Africa 2010. Barring the outstanding Ayala, who will be 35 and maybe retired, I see no reason why the core of the 2006 squad won’t be there (Mascherano, Riquelme, Messi, Tevez etc) raring to go.

One other point on the amazingly talented Riquelme (that backheel for Crespo (who didn’t score) against Serbia & Montenegro anyone?). I think it’s a great pity that he’s not at a much bigger club than Villareal where he would get a chance to showcase his talents on the biggest stage of them all. They aren’t even in Europe this year and, as it is, are rarely on telly either. So long as that bigger club wouldn’t be Man Utd. Then I’d have to hate the lazy magician, something I wouldn’t want to do.
