Reflections on a Romp
Holy Crap. What a pounding…
With so many things to say, here are a few salient observations:
1) I think I remember Argentina beating Mexico 6-0 on the way to its 1978 title (though I could be wrong here). If so, that’s a great omen;
2) Abbondanzieri has so far seemed like an entirely different person than the one suited up for the preliminaries (though he hasn’t been tested);
3) On this blog, we’ve referred to Messi / Tevez as the offensive, off-the-bench ‘ace up the sleeve’ - Today they scored 3 goals in approximately fifteen minutes…How do you think an opponent must feel if they’ve managed to contain Argentina’s starters for, say, a half and then have to look up and see those guys on the sidelines?;
4) Assuming Argentina pounds Holland - it seems we’ll play either Mexico or Angola in the next round (much better than Portugal);
In general, I’m still having trouble digesting that this team could be this good…We need to put up an impressive showing against Holland and I’ll start to begin to allow myself to feel confident…We need to beat Holland to avoid falling into Brazil’s bracket.

When I Poseted my original comment about ppl not welcomed here, I meant idiots who are trying to trash the blog and talk stupid and nosense. If you guys come in and talk straight football, then its perfectly fine…. Be class acts, not jerks.

I am not from Argentina, However, My mom is Argentinian and my dad is American and I was born in California. I Have been to Argentina once in my life, and my mom always talked to me about Maradona and I grew up watching him as I fell in love with him game. I watched him play few games for Argentina here in the US. Since then, I am a devoted Argentian fan…..If Argentina wins the WC, I will be the happiest man on earth, and I would not trade that for anything in the world.

OH YEAH, Is Maradona the greatest fan in the whole world? What a guy, he gets booked for a speeding ticket in Germany because he is trying to get to the match against S&M before tip off… Then, during the game, cameras show Maradona jumping up and down while 30 pounds of jewlery juggle around his neck….Not only that, he visits the team before the game as well as at half time to give them some prop……. Maradona is a true fan, and he has to be the greatest fan in the world.

Skywalker, while I do share your of relief over Robben’s likely exclusion from wednesday’s game, I feel that his presence would have been a good test for our defence.
As you rightly said, the only way teams can trouble Argentina is by pressurising with speed on the flanks. It would have been a good chance to see how the defence acquits itself against such challenge had Robben and Van Persie played.

i think the Brazilian fans in my country are jealous that they did not display such great football. Go Argentina !!!!!!

Vick:
I think you’re right about Crespo and it would be great to see Aimar play since he’s the most deserving of the players that didn’t have a hand in erasing Serbia & Montenegro. I would probably take Ayala out at the half as well.

Argentina played a super game against a shell-shocked S&M team. A true lesson on how to play football, and a leaf from Brazil’s playbook. However it would be wiser to err on the side of caution and not get too carried away.
Remember Euro 2000 when Holland slammed six goals past Yugoslavia (Savo Milosevic of S&M played in that match too!) and people were predicting great things for Holland…but what happened?
They went out on penalties to a surprise Italian team. While its good to be optimistic and hopeful, but don’t count chickens before they hatch.

MARADONA has criticized PEKERMAN many times this year. Is he a fan? Yes. But he wants to be forgiven!
I would like to see Pekerman’s attitude when Diego came to see the players.
Diego is a child everybody killed by the drug system, everybody knows this. Otherwise we would not forgive him being Fucking Fidel Castro’s friend…

We must not get carried away. A draw against Holland would suffice.There are still frailties at the back that are yet to be tested thoroughly (mores the pity Samuel v-v Colocinni Placenter v-v Scaloni).
A cliche 1 game by 1 game. The Serbian team were in disarray lets not forget(I hope Serbia with Vidic back will show they are a excellent footballing nation in Euro 2008).
I have to say I stil think Riquelme is coasting games saving himself for the KO stages.

i like pekerman’s idea to rest so many “starters”..
after all game against holland is wed and next game is saturday or sunday.. thats very little time to rest/get well!

United States

also pekerman knows that with a tie argentina is first in the group..
pekerman has no choice but to field a team made up largely of backups and pray that ayala, sorin and maxi don’t get injured….
three days is not enough time to rest beetween games…
not sure why there are only three days between matches..seems a bit insane..

Go Argentina! They are playing like a team. They deserved to win the WC.
I hope Holland does not play dirty soccer like the way they did with Cote D’Ivoire. It was disgusting! Learn to play fair and win fair.
Martijn….. For your comments there is only one answer.. Argentina should shut you up with the score of 4-0.

[...] It’s clear Argentina are the clear favorites now. By a wide margin. No other team could affort to have Messi and Tevez sitting on the bench. Now, if Argentina wins a game by just 1-0 or 2-0, you know what you have to do. [...]

The above song was made famous by Maradona…
But personally, I think the Terrace song from the 86 WC also made famous by Maradona and the rest of the team is better… It goes something like ‘Argetina is going to be champions. Argentina is going to be champions. To all those who doubted us…. ‘ (I forgot the rest of the song but sounds great in spanish)…
