Norway - Argentina Postgame

August 22nd, 2007 | By: WC Bob | 171 Comments »

The final whistle has blown and Norway defeated Argentina 2-1 behind a pair of goals by John Carew. The first goal was scored from the penalty spot. The second goal was through the air. Six minutes from time Maxi Rodriguez scored, but it wasn’t enough.

Your thoughts on the match and what adjustments, if any, need to be made before World Cup qualifying begins?

Basile’s comments after the Norway game and comments about the upcoming friendly against Australia:

Argentina coach Alfio Basile dismissed criticism of his team’s performance in their 2-1 defeat by Norway, saying it was more important to test new players.

Basile rested several regulars in Wednesday’s friendly in Oslo, including playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme, whose future at club level remains uncertain.

“The moment of truth will be the World Cup qualifiers,” said Basile, whose team begin their attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Cup with a home match against neighbours Chile in October.

“That’s when you can demand results — when we play with what I consider to be the first team,” he told reporters on returning to Buenos Aires.

“The (Norway) game was to experiment with players and you can’t do much work in only two or three days because there isn’t time.”

Wednesday’s game was Argentina’s first since the traumatic 3-0 defeat by Brazil in the Copa America final last month.

Basile’s last chance to test players will be in a friendly away to Australia on Sept. 11.

“The same thing will happen against Australia. It will be useful to analyse the players, especially the ones who have played fewer games for the national side,” he said.

Basile added that his first-choice team would continue to be based around Riquelme, who is still looking for a new club after Spain’s Villareal, who own him, said he did not feature in their plans for this season.

“Riquelme is the one who’s been chosen, we don’t have a similar player and so, when he’s not in the team, we have to use a different system,” said Basile.

My dear Alexa,

Yes I live in Italy, a beautiful country. People are so nice here. And food is delicious.

No, do not go to the stadium just before the game. 1 ) There will not be any ticket left 2) If there are, they will be too expensive!

Go to Roma’s website. There must be a link to buy tickets. When I go to San Siro, i buy my ticket on Inter’s official site. Then I just have to pick it in a “billeteria” at the stadium. Start booking now!

I love Italy. I even feel more at home there than in France. Don’t forget to eat the delicious pasta. And it’s not an expensive country unlike France. That is why you will find cheap tickets. From 30 E to 40 E for a very good view. You will see the elegant defender Mexes, and Trezeguet, the Argentine that we miss so much now.

Contact me if you go one day to Milan.

Ken, Zanetti could be around in 2010, he said he will play until 40 years old. I hope he will good, even old. He is and will be a physical monster, but until when?

Attacking Albo and Alexa is really becoming ridiculous.

Rune, Tevez will shine at MU. I would cut my hand if he didn’t lol.

ajNYHC,

Thx for the Basile words. It is obvious that Aimar has not El Coco’s confidence. Without Roman, he would use another system, probably with Gago. Sad for a the class of little Pablito…

Hallo again, one and all. Back from my weeks vacation in the Peak District.

Missed the friendly but seeing the result in the paper wasn’t exactly comforting. :(

But once again we are all jumping the gun. Holland fell in Switzerland ,Italy were pummelled by Hungary & Armenia tied with Portugual.Spain had a late rally to defeat Greece.

However even so a ’second’ string Argentina should have more than enough ability & skill to beat Norway. I mean was Frode Kippe playing Rune, Tordynna ? And Ronnie Johnsen he of the dodgy knees & aged 38 ?

Give Coco until the Olympics.

Many of the players were looking to the start of the Liga & Calcio seasons. It’s good to give kids like Garay experience. Nothing can prepare you for the international stage unless you get some experience under your belt.

I hear the Milito twins had a shocker again ? As far as I am concerned they do not deserve to be near the seleccion. There are far better alternatives. Not having seen the game did Masche have to compensate again for errors behind him ?

What was Ustaris blunder ?

Regarding Alexa’s comment. Objectively she is right. Argentina have two world cups two other finals appearances etc etc. Norway all fairness to them haven’t exactly set the football firmament alight .

And skimming through the blog updates whats with this verbal abuse ?

I thought we were all fans of the national team ? Yes we can agree to disagree but there is absolutely no need for personal attacks, all of which are completely unfounded made from the security & anonymity of a keyboard.

Truly pathetic.

Getting back to football. Don’t forget Bielsa has to make do with a very understrength Chilean side as a large number of players are serving a ban for their actions at the Copa.

Higuain must get a loan move. Gago was not a Schuster choice but the choice of the President so his future is up in the air. He also needs first team football.

Real Madrid are again in debt . They last managed to avoid bankruptcy through the aid of the Federal Government & selling off their training ground but who knows in a couple of years they could well be in a dire financial situation again.

Tevez as Rune has pointed out is filling in & may well return to a free role when Saha is recalled this weekend.

Rune reading your tract earlier on makes me extremely envious. :) The closest I’ve come to members of the NT so far has been their visit to Vicarage Road with Internazionale almost two years ago with Cuchu & Solari .

Great to see Aguero on target. This season all the responsibility is on him & Mista to fill the void left by Torres & I’m sure he can do it & earn himself a regular spot with the NT.

Sympathies to Antonio Puerta & all the best for speedy recovery. Reminded me of the distressing scenes with the passing of Miklos Feher. :(

The u17 apparently have not been in sparkling form but at least they are in the knock out stages. They should beat Costa Rica & then either face a very difficult QF with Nigeria or Columbia.

I did catch their game [Columbia] with Germany. They play a very direct almost long ball game in effect a stretched game hitting on the counter.

Chau for now compadres. And no back biting or sneering !

Aurelius, He,he..Frode Kippe was not playing. But Ronny Johnsen was, he made his first apperance for Norway in 3 years at the age of 38. Ustari’s blunder was Carew’s second goal, from Riise’s free kick. He came out to get the ball, but was nowhere near it.

blooper
i didn’t see the man u game so i can’t comment on it that much. i saw only serie a games and la liga over the weekend. but it is obvious that man u are in a crisis right now the can’t loose ground to chelsea or liverpool so tevez must make this sacrifice by playing alone up front. the advantage that man u had last season was they were off to a great start plus the were injury free this season its the direct opposite so they will suffer. i am little worried for tevez though too much pressure is on him. plus what will happen to him when rooney and saha returns.

Alexa, don’t you dissapear on us.
BTW, if this is your first time in Italy, try to take a drive to the “Costa Amalfitana” (Amalfi, Sorrento , Capri, etc).
It is to me, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Salutti a tutti…

After 4 matches into the Apertura tournament, forward German Dennis, yet another young talent who plays for Independiente has already 6 goals scored.
Of course there’s now a whole bunch of people watching him closely.
With 5 goals, follows (my fav) Boca’s Pablo Ledesma, amazingly, a midfielder!!

MaxiLopez - Thanks so much for your post. Believe me - When I’m there I will be thinking of your wonderful stories of seeing Zidane play for Juventus and all the other great players you’ve seen in Italy.

About my infamous comments about greatness. I was misquoted by someone who stated that I said that Arg achieved greatness while Norway has never achieved greatness. Of course, I never said that. I said that I think that some teams design their strategies around stopping greatness, while others design their strategies around achieving greatness. The stakes are much higher for the later, and so when they fall, they fall HARD.

I’m not Argentine, I have no patriotism towards Argentina (I don’t even have patriotism for the US, for gods sake).

This is the quote that I always think of when I read things on this forum. But I do follow the Galleano quote to the hilt, no apologies –

….I’ve finally learned to accept myself for who I am: a beggar of good football. I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: “A pretty move, for the love of God.

And when good football happens, I give thanks for the miracle and I don;t give a damn which team or country performs it…

Albo, eres un lindo

Yeah, I stand by them.

Yes Aurelius. Real Madrid is a shame. The same year they bought Zidane for 90 ME, they were in financial crisis. They decided to sell some training camps. Then it was like magic, everything was fine. The debt was dramatic, i don’t know, 150 000 ME i think. Maybe Spanish King helped his Royal (Real) team?

I think Mascherano has many problems in the NT. He is alone. Our team seems completely lost tactically. Of course, i don’t consider last friendy. I’m very pessimisitc these days. Now Abbondanzieri is back. What is doing Basile? Ustari made a mistake, Pato has made 20, even more. Calling El Pato is obviously showing that he hasn’t confidence in Ustari yet. I hope he will play Oscar, but i’m hoping for nothing. I am fed up. Who is managing the team, Basile, Grondona or Russians?!

Can someone please tell me if the friendly is really going to be set in Melbourne ??? After this one, i suppose Grondona will eat like a pig. In fact, he is already one for many years. I hate futbol business. Some of our guys are gonna die and injure themselves, including Zanetti, Crespo, Heinze, Maxi, MESSI,…

I remember France NT, some months before WC 02, they went playing a stupid game in Chili! Then in may 02, France had many injuries including Robert Pires (6 months out),…, and Zidane. The players seem dead at that WC. They were out at first round.

addy1-

I go back and forth with Milito. Can’t make a decision on him but I still think that friendlies serve a purpose. Maybe Milito needs another chance to see what he can bring to the team. I think that Argentina will always have talented players to be competitive even if Milito is not one of them.

How many chances does someone need before we can confidently say that he is not doing us much good? Quite frankly, I am tired of having Milito and Colocinni anywhere near our squad. And I share MaxiLopez’s concern about el Pato. Why is he still around? Conversely, some mighty useful players such as Ibarra have been left out -and were hardly used at all by Basile in the first place. I sometimes get the feeling we’re caught in a straight jacket…

Mirna, thank you. It’s a shame for our players to go there. They should refuse playing the friendly in Melbourne. You will see, presidents and coaches of big clubs will battle with AFA to not release them. The players are only human beings, even Zanetti.

Nikhil, I agree with you. Ibarra is in America. Palacio too. Why Argentine based players don’t come??? They are closer than Europeans from Australia!

By the way, De Michelis is finally back. He could be used in defence. But will brobably sit on the bench and prepare oranges for the players. This guy is an agressive player. We need some like him. Guys like Almeyda (or even Placente, please come back at your level Diego!)are missing in our NT. We only have Masche : (

Why Samuel isn’t called, even as a sub is an enigma.

Norbert u say that European teams is stronger than south americans? In that case why ur Serbia defeated 6-0 by Argentina? But Argentina cant win Mexico Uruqvay Paraqvay Ecuador by 6-0 score. South americans have 2 stronger teams in the world Argentina and Brazil. U have Italy Germany Holland France England Spain. But 2 South americans teams Argentina and Brazil won more titles than your 8 teams. We fight with 9 teams against your 50-60 teams. And our titles is equal. 9-9 in the Worls cups. You see????? Blind Norbert?
