New Thread

February 28th, 2007 | By: Messay Getahun | 254 Comments »

I got tired of scrolling up and down to read some of the best comments in the whole “football blog” world. So I created a new thread :)

Well, Basile has said he is going to call local players and work with them regularly. Pretty interesting. That is a pretty good idea. It will give some of the local players a chance to show what they can do for the National Team. This also lets the local players know that the National Team coach notices them. These are the good things, but I HAVE SOME MAJOR CONCERNS WITH THIS IDEA.

1) I am thinking Basile is doing this so that he could get a feel of what these players can do right? I say that because, i sure dont want to see any of these guys a head of our world class players that play in European Leagues, except maybe two or three. so basile will give them a chance to see what they can do. If this is so, then what is the point of basile calling all these players? why doesnt he attend their clubs practice sessions or sit and watch their games as they play for their clubs? Who benefits from this? The National Team??? how??? Are these players going to play for the National Team because they simply have the time since they live locally, where our stars are abroad??? these are major concerns.

2) What kind of message does this send to our Regular starters, rather the players abroad?

- If you ask me this idea only benefits the local players (even so, i am not sure to what extent). The only way i see it benefiting the National Team is if these are the only players the Main selection is going to come from) If so, then it is a DISASTER.

The VERON issue, is another hot TOPIC. If there is one guy that I wouldn’t want near the National Team; it will be JUAN SEBASTIAN VERON. Why would we need him??? I would rather Basile go to The Media (from Argnetina ) and force them to Never criticize Riquelme, and have the Media Do a Live Apology on the Radio and on TV to Riquelmes Mother for putting her Health in Jeopardy. Go to a RIVER vs BOCA game and during the half time, go to the middle of the Field and ask for RIQUELME to come out and then Get on his knees and Beg Riquelme to come back to the National team, before I LET VERON get on that National Team. But again thats just me.

I will never forget Verons effortless display he produced in 2002. I will never forget how imature he acted with fighting with Sorin. He caused so much division in the locker room. He doesnt deserve a second chance. he had that chance for two world cups. THIS SHOULD BE AIMARS TURN.
BUT I would love to see NERI CARDOZO in the National Team. He is a monster.

May the God bless you all.

Chloe Zen,

Please. I never said Cristiano R. > Messi! Of course not. I didn’t mean it. My English isn’t perfect. I just said i don’t like seeing him dribbling all the time, as Ronaldo does at MU. “Imitating” was not the right term. Don’t think i love Ronaldo, it’s really not the case. Read my last posts.

I know R is not close to Leo. Obviously. I know futbol. Sorry, you misunderstood.

But it’s not because Messi has scored 3 times yesterday that he doesn’t have to play with his partners. I already said that stupid Ridjkaard uses him as a winger, and probably asks him to dribble. That isn’t how Messi should be used. Everyone knows this too.

I love collective futbol. I love Argentina style like everbody here. It’s not a crime to say that Messi must play with his teamates, even if some of you think he’s a futbol “god”.

I hope he played against Real like he played like last year. I’ll soon see the highlights.

Marseille wants to sign tevez in the summer market. It would be a really smart move if he goes.

Our second strikers played wonderful games - Tevez & Messi. Higuain was playing all over the place to support van Nistelrooy.

Ole!!!

The 3rd goal by Messi was just pure brilliance! Instinctiveness, speed, skill and finishing!!! That was a striker’s instinct right there. I am very curious to know what you all think of Messi’s development. Should he be used/developed as :
a. winger
b. striker
c. centre forward/attacking midfielder
d. other - if so , specify!

And WHO was saying ANYTHING about Alizee!!? I demand him to be brought to me and face punishment. As Ing said, she’s hot :-) Marketing product or not !!

Can’t wait for tevez to be back in action this weekend! Anyone’s got the cavenaghi goal on youtube ? I’m really curious to follow his progress. Guys like him and Palacio , if hard work and performance matches their talent, provide a different sort of a dimension to the attack.

For 4-4-2, I love Messi to play as a supporting/second striker. In that sense, he can roam any place from the midfield and, left & right areas onward.

I agree Messay. The blog’s atmosphere was better months ago. I remember before the WC, there were so much passion, no stupid people with no social life & insulting everyone. Guys, i come on the net almost only for this site!

Please people lets talk about argentina futbol. Why do you think guys like AURELIUS or ALBO are gone?

Argentina 2010: Civelli is bad compared to our other argentine defenders. We saw it again yesterday against Baros & Lyon. Cavenaghi must not be selected until he has been really efficient. He has a future in the NT but must develop and work to earn it.

Vick, i want Messi to be an attacking midfielder, a second playmaker, turning around Pablito Aimar in the NT. Youri Djorkaeff had that role in 98 & 00, turning around Zidane. It worked for them.

Messay:
I think Messi should be used as an attacking midfielder. Maybe as a second striker. I gree with you about the atmosphere on this blog. We can disagree and still be repectful. I love this blog and it`s wonderful for me to have the opportunity to speak to other Argiefans worldwide. In Norway, there are not many like me…They support England here….. Or Brazil….
Because of the different timezones it will be impossible for some of us to chat if we were to start a chat room somewhere, so I really hope this blog will live forever.
Cheers

Many of you have sugegsted that Messi be used as a supporting second striker. A note of caution in this regard is due for Argentina already has a surfeit of second striker with a free role in Tevez, Saviola, Aguero and now Higuain. Messi as a playmaker can be groomed to be Riquelme’s successor. As much as I like Aimar, he has been too injury prone to merit confidence as the lynchpin of a team.

Seriously, we need a new thread!

Messay, so are you the moderator of this Argentina blog? Is is just you, or are there others? I’m glad to know there are people that have the ability to ban or kick out people.

MaxiLopez, i agree with you too. Before WC this place was amazing. It’s true you can talk and disagree, but you have to have respect for others.

I bet you when COPA AMERICA is around the corner, everyone will be all nice to eachother again.

Anyways,
peace.

I know we are all excited by Messi’s performance on Saturday but did everybody miss Boca vs Estudiantes and more importantly Riquelme vs Veron?

Palermo scored a hatrick in that game!

Hello everyone. What a game by Messi! He finally looked like he was free again. Like he had the green light to just play. When you have a talent like Messi you have just got to get him the ball. Messi is so good at the one touch I dont know why everyone is complaining about his dribbling. he does a lot of one touch passes with other barc players. I continue to look at him as an attacking mid. Like it has been noted there are some advantages to not having the players so caste in a role on the team. I look at the 2010 team as a group of players that can move positions around as the game goes on. Then tactical coaches cant just put two players on one guy and shut him down. I see Gago, Aimar, Messi, Aguero, Maxi, and maybe even Higuain by 2010 being these players. Messi would be in an attcking mid startiing postion but would move around the field to where ever he could find space. A player of his talent should not be confind or limited in his playing space. If you have Aguero and Huguain upfront and Aimar and Gago in the middle with Messi and Maxi on the wings then Messi floats a little and Gago can cover for him. That still leaves you with four defenders to cover the counters. Believe me when I say that Messi is the key to the 2010 and 2014 teams. He is the difference maker. The great player of his decade.

Messi,

I was just going to bring that up. Riquelme was awesome. His creation of the second goal - 43rd minute I think, was spectacular. Veron absolutely sucked. Riquelme is 10 times better than Veron.

About all the insults. They are not needed in this forum. However just because someone expresses a negative opinion on a player does not mean they are insulting. Free thinking and sharing of opinions should be encouraged even if it sometimes sounds negative. You dont always have to be postive to be welcome in this blog. All we ask is that you be sincere and honest in sharing your opinions and not just here to cause a fight. Take care all.

One last rant about this precociously talented teenager - Messi.

Yes he maybe once again dubbed the new Maradona after Saviola, Ortega, Aimar, Riquelme etc. and yes the players above were far from El Diego. But something tells me - Messi might yet be the closest. Back from injury and hungrier than ever.

When I watched the game - there was nothing special from Messi. He was all over the pitch -defending, attacking, running at defenders, dropping his shoulder, turning, dribbling. So okay, all his performances are special compared to other players, but when I say it was nothing special I mean that in comparison to his own past performances. It was the typical Messi on the right side of the pitch. He created opportunities, combined fantastically with the sublime Ronaldinho and created chances. But this game was different. It was the El Clasico - and Messi’s a teenager.

His first goal was taken calmly as he burst into the penalty area and coolly slotted past Casillas. His second goal - smashed into the roof of the net, only demonstrated his poacher instinct. His final third in the 90th minute to earn Barca the draw was immaculate to say the least. He picked up Ronaldinho’s pass which was meant for Gudjohnsen, skipped past 2 Real Madrid defenders - leaving them for dead, and put the ball behind Iker Casillas. His calmness and poise intertwined with his speed, close ball control and skill was astonishing. Fantastic finishing to the game - which saw the youngest Barca player get a hat-trick. At 19 he has carved his way into the El Clasico history books along side Cryuff, Maradona, Lineker, Di Stefano, Ronaldinho to name a few. Yes its far too early, to say what he might turn into in the future. But for my money, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Yes, there have been better performances by Messi, but what makes this special - is that he has just added another dimension to his game - a little away from his dribbling, beating defenders and creating chances. He’s turning into a goal scorer as well. Scary, indeed.

Ronaldinho a Brazilian himself hailed Messi as the most sublime talent in Barca. Well, Ronaldinho might be a little humble about his own talents - but nonetheless that is some lavish praise .
