My heart has started to beat normally again.

We are in the quarterfinals! And boy have we earned it. Mexico played like possessed demons today, especially in the first half. Their intensity was such, that they literally forced a goal. In fact the pressure they created affected our play till extra time.

Until then Mexico had had much of the possession and kept intensifying the pressure. It was like expecting to go for a walk in park, and instead being shoved into a mad roller coaster. Thankfully the experienced Crespo managed to connect with a Riquelme corner kick and put in the equalizer before any further damage was done.

Most of our guys are playing their first world cup, and some of them are facing this kind of national expectation for the first time. Better that we have had a situation like this now, rather than later. To be able to come back from a goal down to win a knock out match shows great character and an ability to play under pressure.

We’ll be better ready for it should a similar situation arise in the future.

Kudos to Jose Pekerman, for turning things around in extra time. I was expecting them to come back with all cylinders firing after the first half, but they continued to make elementary mistakes. The psychological connection between the team was lacking, and it severely hurt our passing game. The dynamic duo of Messi and Tevez should have won us the game in injury time, but an incorrect offside decision ruined the goal.

Fortunately the boys turned it around in extra time. Jose Perkerman had strong words for them, and I suspect he told them to forget about what had happened earlier and take the extra thirty minutes as a new game entirely.

His substitutions were excellent. He brought fresh legs up front with Messi and Tevez, and the introduction of Aimar was crucial. Riquelme was tired towards the end, and was told to play a defensive position, which he did well. It took guts to play Riquelme and Aimar together, but it did the trick as the passing started to click again.

What about that strike by Maxi Rodriguez? This guy has been a revelation in this tournament, and is our leading scorer alongside Hernan Crespo. Granted, we’ve seen some better strikes in the world cup. But to put one through at such a crucial stage is genius.

Heinze played atrocious football, while I was scared every time the ball got near Scaloni. After being picked ahead of Javier Zanetti, Scaloni has been ridiculed by every fan. And while he did a few things right up front, he made a few mistakes while defending.

All in all, our guys must be ridiculously tired. Their next match is against Germany, who are playing some fantastic football in front of their fans. It is going to be an extremely physical match, which is why our guys need to be well rested. They also need to put together a much stronger performance. But let’s not think about the future right now. Let us rejoice in our advancement to the quarterfinals!

way to go argentina, next is germany, too bad this match is happening so early. The germans are playing like a well oiled machine bent on world domination, Vs sweden they were just about perfect for like the first 25 minutes. I hope argetina’s defense plays better againt them, my dad saw that final back in 74′ when the germans were host too but the dutch were favorites and he feels the same way about the germans this time around and so do I, I just dont see the germans loosing against anybody, their morale is high as it can be, we’ll see what happens.

Thank you Maxi for keeping our dreams alive.
Heinze,u nearly cost us the match.
Messi was just AWESOME!!(Come on,Pekerman,use Messi as your starting XI!!If world’s greatest club,Barcelona can do that,why can’t we,the world’s GREATEST FOOTBALL TEAM!!!!)
Anyway,i think against Mexico was just our off day.But it could be a blessing in disguise and bring us down to earth and wake us up to face the Germany(it’s pay back time,Remember 1990?)
Vamos Argentina!!!

Argentina barely managed to move into the next round here. Germans play good agressive soccer in first 10-20 minutes. On the otherhand, Argentina doesn’t start well.. It’s hard to see Argentina beating Germany - unless Peker changes the lineup. It’s going to be interesting first 20 minutes which will decide who will win this battle. If Argentina can restrict Germany from scoring in first 20 minutes, we will be winners !

Germany are a much superior team than Mexico - Argentina need to start with Tavez and Crespo and Sub them with Messi and Saviola. Aimar should start with Requelme, this will take some pressure off Requelme and put some pressure on German midfield.

I will be very dissappointed to see Argentina exit from worldcup in quarter finals. Good Luck Argentina.

We didn’t play too well becasue:
1- Mexico scored early, changed all our tactics.
2. Scolani sucked. He is horrible defensively.
3. Heinze had a very bad game.
4. I would like to see Burdisso back, we need him badly to anchor the defense.
5. If our defense is solid, then midfield is good, thus Requelme will play great. But if defense is no good, then forget it.
6. I would love to see the combo of Crespo and Messi starting. It would put a lot of pressure on opponents defense.

First of all everybody please ignore that stupid ignorant KANGAROO from down under! You must have some real mental problems to come and write in a blog which is not for your national team and you are not a fan of it and you are not even from opponent country (Mexico)!! Go get some help lady and find something more useful than writing crap in here and don’t forget to take your pills! Anyway how old are you? 10 or something? With that “God created who first and who second” crap, I remember hearing those stupid arguments when I was in primary school!!!!

Now about the game! I am really happy this happened against Mexico! I hope they wake up now and get back on their normal game play. Scaloni and Heinze simply killed me. I cursed and screamed so much that I woke up my wife and she was scared to death that what had happened. Scaloni couldn’t give strikers one clear ball. All simply taken by Mexicans and every time he got the ball he had to stop the ball for long time to find a player to pass the ball to him and most of the time that player was a Mexican. Heinze was too lucky he wasn’t sent off after that stupid mistake and stupid tackle, goal was also his mistake in marking player.

I couldn’t watch the last minutes of game. I was so scared Mexicans score after 85 and make all of us cry for the 5th consecutive time! Man I am so happy we are not playing every night or I would be dead of pressure after 2 days. Now can just enjoy and relax till Friday.

Damn stupid referees!!! How many more goals they want to get from us? Crespo must have been Top Scorer already with 5 or 6 goals. This happening in each and every game is really irritating me.

I am die hard Argentina fan, I start loving Argentina from 1986 with Great Diego pumping blue and white love in to my heart when I was only five, Batigol was my only role model when I was a teen and you can say I still love everything about him. Messi is just going to continue this glory. I am not Argentinean but VIVA ARGENTINA FOREVER.

VIVA ARGENTINA!

Results (2nd Stage): Argentina vs Mexico

I missed my prediction for this game where Mexico was supposed to win.

Judging by the way the two teams played it could have gone either way that saw Maxi Rodriguez scoring on a left-footed shot on the 98th minute.

It was a close game which starte…

My view of the game- instaed of criticising Aargentina we must congratulate Mexico for taking the game to us and attacked when they had the ball.

Mexico deserve credit for their efforts whilst i feel Argentina were jusy a little better, Bdst game of the tournament!! I had no fingernails left.

I feel we played well considering the way Mexico played but what the hell is Scaloni doing.

DROP SCALONI. THE MAN WAS PATHETIC YESTERDAY AND DIDNT DO MUCH IN DEFENCE OR ATTACK. THE WORST PLAYER IN THE TEAM BY A MILE.

Please Burdisso hurry back quickly.

Congratulations to the Mexicans as well for an excellent game. They were rightly considered as contenders for the world cup.

To my opionion BOTH teams gave it their best argentina had the flaw of SCALONI and mexico had the lost of rythim they had in first half due to the change of their 2 injured players. SO!! BOTH TEAMS PLAYED EQUALY WELL! therefore i tip my hat to both teams and Hopefully argentina beats Germany and the number one reason of them all BRASIL!!!

Argentina will lose (not by much though). The Germans are very strong and BIG compared to the Argentinos. Not only that I think the Germans are going to get a lot of ‘help’ from the ref and linesmen, I hate to say it but they won’t allow Germany to lose at home. Trust me, FIFA wants Brasil vs. Germany for the final. It’s happened before in other host countries. Check the quarterfinal scores in Argentina in 78.

On Aimar, Messi, and Tevez:

I don’t think the “Riquelme sucked” piece is valid. He did, however, get very tired from the dogging that Mexico’s midfield laid on him. Mexico are very fit and determined, and they were tough to handle. He wore down. But his languid style is very effective. It’s elegance more than quickness, but he gets the job done. What I don’t see, however, is why Cambiasso plays in front of Aimar. Cambiasso’s a good player, but simply a cog; Aimar can create. Certainly if Argentina go down, they should bring Aimar in . I thought the entire pace of the game changed when he arrived; Mexico had controlled much of midfield up to that point. Certainly Aimar and Riquelme can play together.

2) If you were the defense, would you rather play against Messi or Tevez, on the one hand, or Saviola. Again, it’s a perfectly good player versus explosiveness. They need Crespo still, for the little men cannot get to any headers, but I think the big German defenders would hate to find themselves one on one with either Tevez or Messi. They’re just to quick and fast.

3) Klose is a handful that might be more than the Argentinian central defense can handle. That’s my biggest worry. And the airballs, where their height will be quite advantageous. Should be a great game; whoever wins, in my opinion, goes all the way.

Go Argentina!
