Mexico Lineup & Injuries

June 23rd, 2006 | By: JP | 27 Comments »

So the lineup for the Mexico game has been announced: Sorin, Heinze, Crespo and Saviola will all be playing…Burdisso has strained a ligament in his knee and won’t be back until the semi-finals - Coloccini will play in his position. Lucho warmed-up a little yesterday and might be ready for the quarterfinals.

Apart from the general nerves that come with single elimination play…I think the team is in a good place. Coloccini is certainly the biggest vulnerability and Ayala will have to do a lot of extra work to cover. My hope is that Argentina can open up a significant lead early and keep on attacking and controlling the ball. Mexico can be a tricky opponent and I’d have a heart attack if it went to penalties. We have to hope that we can make it to the finals without having any shoot-outs.

To me, the only vulnerability is the argentinian defence … if argentinian defenders can keep the mexican strikers at bay then we should be comfortable as the forward line is in good form.

I think we can defeat Mexico with no problem, but we will have a lot of injured players…
and that can play against that for the quarters.

Vamos Argentina Carajo!

I support Mexico 100%, but honestly, if I had to bet, I would put my feelings behind and bet for an Argentina win. It hurts to admit it, but I dont doubt it will happen.

On the other hand, Mexico can be tricky, and if Argentina makes mistakes, then they are at risk. The one thing Argentina can rely on, is not that they can score, but that Mexico has been so bad finishing, that it should be easy.

Good luck to both teams.

It’s a shame Nicolas can’t play, he blended in perfectly in the team. However, you have to remember that Collocini was Pekerman’s first choice for a while, so he shouldnt be too bad.
I think it should be an easy win, the Mexicans are on a low right now and their finishing is just disgusting; they dont really excel in any part of the field.

Argentina 3 - 0 Mexico

I hope De La Volpe makes it easy for his country of birth :)

mexico are rubbish but then this is footy and anything can happen! first goal is massively important: if arg get it, it could be 4 or 5 by the end, but if mexico get it, it will be a tight game! i like the idea of having messi and tevez on bench to come on for last 30 mins when the other team is getting tired! only brazil and spain of the other teams can call on subs of nearly that quality. It says a lot about the strenght of argie football that the 3x S America player of the year cant get in the first 11!
mexico score first: arg 2-1 mex
argentina score first: 4-0
gotta hope that sweden get a good game against germans as the home croud is allways hard to play!

What everybody is missing is Mexico’s coach Ricardo is an Argentinian and he palyed on the WC winning Argentinian team in 78. Also there are two players who are from Argentina but defected to Mexico. So they have good inside information about Argentina. The only strategy is to get one goal within the first 10 minutes and making the oponent to open up or else they will pile 2-3 defenders on our Midfield and strikers and make it miserable like the Dutch

am i missing something about colocini? ive watched teh game vs the duch like 3 times now and i just dont see where he is lacking on defence..hes big..wins in the air all the time..and is always in good position,,,, i think nico is a better choice cause he can push forward thats it..i really feel like im missing somethign on colocini i think he does a great job…..and does anyone else think that milito did and outstanding job specially passing…maybe heinze is a better defender but dang it when he passes its always a long apss to no one..milito really impressed me with his crisp long passes

our team must score in first half to get the rythm going.Collocini proves to be a achiles heel as he is prone for robust challenges that can be harmful to the team.
As long as riquelme is inspiring,no team can beat us.

agree with you javier, i don’t really think colocini is all that bad. Its mascherano, who scares me the most. He was making some awful passes in the last game. And his offensive adventures are always out of rhythm with rest of the team.

Call me crazy but It’d be great if Tevez or Messi took over his possition. Although i haven’t seen Tevez make any crucial passes or set up any organized attacks yet, Messi could definitely handle the attacking midfield position along with Riquelme.

I know how important it is to have a midfield that moves the ball around properly and sets up organized plays. But i hate seeing players (our forwards) who are SOOO talented with the ball, just sitting at the sidelines watching mascherano make mistakes because of his lack of confidence with the ball.

please give me some feedback about mascherano. Has he ever done anything great in the last games that i am missing?

absolutely…macherano is the anchor in the back…ur not looking at the whole picture..mach may make some mistakes but he runs the whole game and is always around the ball…dont be mistaken..mach is riqulme in the back..dont forget this is his first world cup and he is coming back from a grave injury..i lvoe mach and i think when he is playing well argentina does not loose..look at all the corners and free kicks macherano stays back almost by himself…also when on d look around the ball ull always see number 8 around…dont judge the whole game on one or two passes mach is irreplasable…he is our fourth defender and he is the one that allows sorin go forward u take mach out…u need a fourth defender and sorin is out of the game..read all collums from argentinian writeers and u wont find many negative things said about mach….oh by the way on cofedaration cups mach was out and one of the main reason we lsot to brazil so badly….the game we beat brazil 3 to 1 in the elimination rounds mach and sorin were all over kaka and ronaldinho…trust me pray to whoever u pray to that mach doesn get hurt….thats my opinion anyways i think its pretty acurate

yagu: Masca is a holding midfielder, it is his job to tackle and win the ball, break up the play of the other team and then give the ball to the more attacking midfielders. You are crazy if u think messi or tevez would be able to play there, even more crazy if u think an international manager is going to play a forward as a defensive midfielder. Also from what ive seen this guy has been the best holding player of the tourney so far and at 22 he is showing maturity beyond his years! Expect a huge money transfer to one of europes big clubs after the tourney. (chelsea anyone?)

Laura, would you like to eat your words? After last night performace, no you are not the strongest team. You didn’t score in full time, the Mexicans actually scored 2 goals, unfortunatley one was in your net! And as for Heinze’s foul on Fonseca well he should have been sent off there and then as he was clearly thru with only the goal keeper to beat. You are by far one of the weakest teams left and are thru because of a lucky break.

llc is a moron who clearly knows nothing of futbol..look at the replay and do it frame by frame if u have to….the ball hits crespos toes first….also argentina deserved this win and created by far more dangerous chances than mexico..it jsut looked ugly because thats what mexico forced argentina to play an ugly game…it backfired though because wasting so much energy the first half they didnt have that much left the second half and argentina scored on the last minute and it didnt count…also i dont think that tackle by heinze deserved a red..he was in front of the player not behind and ayala was closing in….the rulebook says only if the offensive player is last and has a scoring chance one on one vs the goalie its a red card…

Javier, for your info. LLC is a female, so please do not disrespect a woman (if you have at least any manners). And for all of you guys thinking you are the best!!! Well I am half German and half Mexican, all I can say is, GERMANY will definetly eliminate Argentina. That’s for sure. I can’t wait to see the finals Germany vs. Brazil (the best of the world). Argentina is no match to Brazil, the whole world knows that!!! Brazil will always be number one regardless. But I’ll say that the Germanny vs. Argentina will be 4:1 in favor of Germany. That’s just my prediction. As with Mexico, you know Mexico won the U-17 FIFA, and Mexico is no longer a weak team as all of you mentioned. But lets put all that bullshit aside and concentrate for the next game. See you all!!!
