Messi Likely to miss Champions League Final

May 2nd, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 17 Comments »

The reports are that Lionel Messi is all but certain to miss the Champions League final on May 17 as he continues to recover from his thigh injury. If this wasn’t a World Cup year I would be really disappointed with this news, but my main concern is that the kid recover in time for Germany. Risking injury against a physical Arsenal team is something that I don’t want to see. It would have been great watching him run circles around the Arsenal backline, but in the end I’d rather have him 100% healthy in June. Hopefully this isn’t the type of injury that will just continue to linger, but only time will tell us that.

This news is still not official, neither Agentina’s media nor Barca confirmed it. I dont understand why Messi would need more than 2 weeks maximum. He is already training with the ball. I guess Barca staff wants to be extra precautions after what happened last time.

We have a friendly against Angola on May 30. Messi should be 100% for that game.

I don’t think this is true.. his injury should be well recovered by now :). This is bad for him, as he was just starting to be the limelight and he got injured, also he needs to play against Angola to practise with the team.
(I notice the Argentina blog has the most comments then any other Country blog :p)

Hey, just posting the stories I saw. I hope it isn’t true either, but if you were Peckerman would you want to see Messi play in this game? I wouldn’t want him to be in a position to aggrevate the injury. Let him rest a little more.

I think it’s important he plays the Angola game, so that he can practise, and the whole team can start to gel together before the world cup and build the team spirit some more. I don’t think he will need much effort to win the game anyway, maybe Angola vs our U14 team will be a bit more of a challenge :p. I think the injury will be completely healed unscaved in 2 weeks.

I think that if it were not a World Cup year he would play for Barcelona in the final but why take a chance. All due respect to the champions league it iS not even close in importance to the world cup. Plus Barcelona have an agenda as they want their players to excel in the WC and bring more PR to the their team next season. Messi dont play in the league final. PLAY IN THE WORLD CUP FINAL! GO ARGENTINA!

Messi should lay off and not play another match till the WC. He keeps tearing that thigh muscle by not allowing proper recovery time.

Moderator: Start a thread for TV viewing schedules, channels, for USA viewers. Which channels are showing, how much do they cost, are they showing all or some matches, cost of subscription, all available options, reliability, etc.

Last WC, I relied on ESPN and Telemundo. ESPN’s commentator was horrible, and telemundo, couldn’t understand the commentary.

A few days after the CL Final we will get to hear that he may not be fit for the World Cup. Just wait and see. It`s been two months now. And for six weeks we have been saying; he`ll be back in a couple of weeks. I just don`t believe it anymore. It`s time for us to realize that we have to play the World Cup without our best player. I`m not sure if I`ll watch the World Cup now….

Messi is NOT our best player. Anyone want to indulge me in why think that way - lets have a healthy argument.

Rune: your freaking out mate, just chill.. his injury is no way serious enough for him to miss the world cup, thats why he is resting now, and could possibly miss the CL match. I agree with Ajay he is not our “best player” yet as he has alot to learn, which players such as Riquelme, Tevez, and some our eldery players have alot more of experience. We will win the worldc cup this time, Im sure.

Rune, you need to seriously calm down a bit. Messi is only suffering from a muscle injury. No broken bones or such. He is ALREADY training with the ball. He will be ready to play in the CL final but the Barca staff dont want to take the risk.

Even if he does not go to the WC ( which is really improbable) then we will have Aguero instead.

Aguero is NOT going. We have way too many forwards with more experience than him.

yea thats what bielsa said about sviola in 2002 and instead he brought in canniga

believe it or not WC’s are won by youngsters

you cant wait for the next world cup cause aguero is in form now and he is hungry to prove something

why get him in a few yrs when he is probably not as good, injured
or already playing for a big club

he has a lot to prove and this could make him a valuable comodity

Ok, I will try to calm down. I hope you are right about Messi`s injury. I would love to see Aguero in the squad, because he is on fire at the moment. But I guess Pekerman has other plans…

barcelona should handle Arsenal fine without him. The most important thing is that he’s ready for the Angola friendly and healthy for the WC.
